It can work, if you believe in the possibility of changing rejection and abuse to something more positive (which you can!) Competition and wanting to overcome a barrier, such as rejection, can be a huge boost to dopamine. The problem is it can also undermine motivation if it makes your goals feel unattainable. Its a…

Yoga might not make you physically fitter or stronger in the ways we tend to care about but it has its own benefits beyond making you feel good. For one thing it greatly increases physical and mental resilience. Its hard to appreciate how much a difference that makes unless you are working alongside other people who do…

Deadmau5 - Hey Baby (NSFW) Haha, that happens! My typical playlists are full of trip hop, ambient or EDM. Totally different for exercise.

If your goal is overall health this looks like a great balance afaik. Yoga is tough in a different way to cardio and strength training. Everyone tends to train to efficiency in various ways and lack in others. You're doing it all. I wish I was so sensible. If you want to make sure dropping cardio isn't a problem,…

Not an expert but that definitely looks like mostly loose skin plus a minor remainder of stubborn fats, the kind that work themselves out with time. 100% honest. I have two friends who lost an enormous amount over a couple of years and they had to deal with this at the tail end. They were older though, so body less…

This! It doesn't take too long to gain or lose fitness if you're training regularly. Tried interval training? That will get your heart rate up XD

Yep! Luckily there are ways to compensate for the struggle point, through delayed gratification. With medium to medium-high intensity exercise I usually get a lot of resistance after about 20 mins. If I keep pushing I will tend to get an endorphin rush eventually and then I can keep going for a lot longer, because I feel…

If you're being strict about the calorie count and also working out you're doing the right things, though how many calories are burned through exercise can be a little complicated to calculate. Give it some more time. Weight can fluctuate a great deal from day to day, week to week, for reasons other than fat loss. 12 days…

Excellent. Yes, they definitely go together. Drinking messes with self control and both of those drugs also increase the desire for the other. If you're quitting try to get some good probiotics going for a few months. The tendency to put on weight related to giving up smoking is connected to a sudden die off of gut…

An issue I have right now, too! I think I drink too much, too often. I enjoy it but my self-control goes out the window, both while being drunk and with the impact of a hangover. A problem I'm having with cutting down is that I almost always only drink when my wife does. She loves it and does not feel it is detrimental to…

Yes, I've done therapy before. Not for the same reasons. All of us could use some decent therapy. All of us. There is no one, no matter how well accomplished or content, that couldn't benefit from some well targeted therapy. I definitely agree with the previous post. If you can get it, do it! Just go for it. There are…

OMG Sandra Bullock, yes! Not only amazingly beautiful but the kind of roles she plays chime with me. She blew me away in Gravity, especially. Such a vital and authentic performance while still being vulnerable and human. I married the kind of girl that she is in Gravity. I know she's an actress but I would seriously blush…

Ok, and now for a more direct example of how to love your body. Try, in a quiet moment when you have the time, to empathize with your body. Let your mind focus on how it feels. Be aware of it, beyond what you *want* it to be and more towards what it *needs*. Is it tired, stressed, demanding, etc? Be generally kind towards…

Exercise! No mention of exercise beyond physical therapy putting on muscle! Seriously, what is your feeling about exercise? How much do you do naturally? What do you *feel* like, when you're not thinking about how what you look like in the mirror shapes up to your expectations of how you should look? Do you feel strong,…

Yes. I have struggled with this for as long as I've been aware of self-image. It got so bad in my late teens and early twenties that I pushed myself to male anorexia. I was built like an ox, with so little BF that I was seriously unhealthy. Didn't matter. I still felt unhappy with how I looked. I wanted my physique to look…

* Uplifting or high energy music while doing aerobic exercise - very good. * Listen to audio books while doing something methodical and boring. * Mood music while doing yoga and stretching. * Used to live in rural areas. Went for walks for hours with music, audio books or other stuff to entertain the mind. * Dancing to…

Weight loss, very much so! Exercise, very much so! Vocal exercises, especially singing lessons and didgeridoo playing are good for this. Prioritizing healthy sleep patterns, big deal. If you live in a place where it is legal, marijuana before sleeping can also help. Mindful of forum rules in commenting! I had an older…

This is how I'm looking at things now. I'm 37 and my aim is to be in great shape by 40 and get into the habits *now* that I can keep for decades. I've tried to recapture how I was in my late teens to early 20s and yeah, that is a kind of nostalgia and ultimately has to fail as motivation eventually. I think it helps to try…

Recent research suggests giving up smoking can make significant changes to your gut bacteria and that this is in particular is responsible for the tendency to put on a bit of weight afterwards. Look into it. Trying to replenish the balance of gut bacteria after quitting might help.

I used to believe that if I just did enough exercise I could eat anything I wanted. It sort of worked, since if I started to notice a bit of visible weight gain I'd push myself harder with exercise. Curious to see what will happen now that I'm counting calories. EDIT: wrong thread!

I'm a Brit expat in Canada. Very similar situation, e.g. work in IT, put on weight in a couple of years after sitting at computer all the time and looking to lose it. So many conflicting views on the carb thing. Personally I think its best to stick closely to the science. A low-carb diet does seem to be better for weight…

Thanks! From past experience I've found there is no point I look slim because my frame is so large. Even if I've been lacking a healthy amount of calories and there is little to cover my muscles and bones I still look big. Most likely my goal weight will turn into a goal body composition, like you say.

Accelerando by Charles Stross. I'm two thirds the way through this book. Its a strange read and very heavy on transhumanist concepts. The overarching narrative suffers a bit due to the characters going through enormous changes as time progresses. Not all that surprising, since it was supposedly composed from a set of short…
