  • Just thought I'd mention that I found Hain's Featherweight Baking Powder at my local health food store today. I'd checked the Hain website for retailers, and the local place wasn't listed, but apparently their records aren't up to date. The Featherweight has no sodium at all. I do a good bit of baking at home so this is a…
  • If canned and processed foods are inevitable, you can rinse them off too. I make a habit of rinsing off things like sliced meats and canned vegetables before using them. I hate to say it, but I honestly believe that it's impossible to eat a low sodium diet away from home. Restaurants put salt on EVERYTHING. (even on…
  • You killed it? How shocking. ( That poor, defenseless treadmill didn't stand a chance. )
  • My aunt used to take a venison roast and make a kind of pot roast out of it. Season with salt and pepper and lavish amounts of hot sauce. Sear it on all sides in some olive oil in a dutch oven, and set aside. Slice a bunch of onions really thin (three or four) and dump them in the dutch oven. Top with the roast that's been…
  • Until I read this thread, I though I preferred pineapple to just about any other mix in, but now I see I have some exploring to do. (that idea with the strawberries sounds good!) I do think I prefer a tangy mix-in to less assertive flavors.
  • Just hang in there, you're doing a bunch of good things for yourself, and like anything new, it takes a while to get in the groove. (And thanks for the reminder, I need to go change my sodium 'goal' number, mine's too high. I try to stay within a certain range, but I'd like a more blatant reminder, LOL!! ) As for me, I'm…
  • I just find the nutrition profile for whatever it is I'm desperately craving, and figure out if I can make room for the calories in my daily allotment. I do try to manage some kind of balanced meals, but allow myself a few empty calories on a fairly regular basis, just so I don't go insane and splurge on sugar and fat. :)…
  • Yeah, the meal thing is a bit confusing. If you notice on your food diary pages, with each segment (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner ....) you have the option to "Remember Meal". It's handy if you have exactly the same meal over and over. Once you've saved it as a 'Meal' you do have to search for it the same way you would for any…
  • I've been getting along well with a My Weigh scale, though I think I'd get a different model now that I"ve been working with this one for a while. I think I'd get the i5000, which comes with a nice big bowl. I have the 7001DX, which has a nice bowl, but given all the baking I do, I think I'd go with the bigger one. (Got…
  • If you're in the mood for something fishy, try some sardines. The King Oscar sardines in olive oil that I like have 14 g protein per can, which is one serving. (but do drain the excess olive oil, I find this works only if the sardines are at room temperature first. If you chill them, the oil will be too thick to drain…
  • Here's a link to a food thesaurus page about 'edible pods', the top photo is of okra: http://www.foodsubs.com/Pods.html

  • I agree with this. It sounds as though you really need to take a good hard look at your entire lifestyle, not just the specific foods (and quantities) that you eat. Starving yourself is counterproductive, you're literally fighting your own body. Set up your food diary to track your cholesterol, that should be helpful.
  • I just boil it. (well, okay, simmer) I do prefer the whole baby okra for that though. Bigger pods tend to be tougher, which aren't as nice to eat whole. I also like to put a sliver of unsalted butter on top of my serving, which doesn't kill my daily calorie count or fat grams goal quite as much as you might think. (On the…

  • My favorite relatively healthy snack is a pizza made using a whole wheat burrito for a crust, a teaspoon of olive oil on the crust, a measured amount of sauce (2 Tablespoons Muir Glen) and cheese (1/4 cup shredded), and a measured amount of whichever topping I'm in the mood for. Black olives tend to be a favorite, but I…
  • Thanks Eve23, I didn't realize it was possible to customize my goals. I've been getting plenty of fiber, but as I say, the automatic setting seemed awfully low to me, so I've ignored it in favor of my usual amount. I'm feeling like SUCH a newbie, LOL!! Every time I think I've understood something, I find ten new things to…
  • I'm tracking fiber in my food diary, because I want to be sure to get enough, but the 'goal' number listed for me is just 16g. I'd thought that it was considered healthy to have something more like 30g of fiber per day. Does anyone have some insight on why my listed goal number for fiber is so small??
  • I like whole wheat burritos, and use them to wrap just about any sort of filling. It's a great way to use up leftovers and get some extra fiber in my diet. Some things do taste better warmed up, but others are just fine cold/room temp.
  • This is similar to what I do. I'd rather just go ahead and eat something I recognize as food and balance out the rest of my diet so that the bit of excess from a bit of cheese gets balanced out by some other really healthy stuff. It tastes better, also, in the long run, I find it costs less. Maybe I'm just a cheapskate,…
  • I've been eating a half of a whole wheat bagel with just a bit of reduced fat cream cheese on it. I don't add very much cream cheese at all, just enough to get a hint of texture and flavor. 120 calories for the half bagel, and I'm guessing less than 35 calories for the cream cheese (I don't use the full amount listed in…
