Back in January I completed a twenty-mile backpacking trip in roughly 48 hours with a 35 lb pack.

It was some of the boys in our troop that had just gotten neat stuff for Christmas. We ALWAYS have backup troop gear in those situations. Personally, I love my little esbit stove and fuel tabs.

We went to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park about three weeks ago. We started at the trailer camping area and went out almost to the river to an area called Cowboy Camp and then back. We ended up hiking 20 miles between Friday night, Saturday, and mid-afternoon Sunday. The gear failures were interesting on this trip:…

Just replaced a Camelback that I have had for years. Its still in great shape, just needed more room. Went with a military style one this time that I could almost go a couple of days with. Keeping the camelback as a backup option.

I do have a question for those in the UK. If everything is so much safer and more peaceful there, why is the government having to develop body armor that will resist stabbings for the police force? I agree that everything boils down to personal responsibility, and that is seriously lacking here in the US. I for one am…

I've browsed a few of the posts on this thread, not all of them admittedly. One of the biggest fact I do not see or hear much either here or in the news is that Aurora does NOT allow ANY concealed weapons. NONE, and this guy passed the required background checks. Pure and simple, for all the laws and everything in place,…

A lot of good advice, watch for blisters as well. You can get wilderness first aid training through the Red Cross, I would highly recommend it. You may also want to check the cell phone coverage in your area. If there is no service, you need to have a plan if someone does get hurt. If it's not too cool at night, you can…

That horse is amazing!!!!!

I'm glad the guns come before the drinking. Priorities in the correct order!

Geez: cooking, reading, writing fanfic, hiking, camping, kayaking, guns, archery, photography, videography drawing, gardening, amateur radios, weather chasing/watching, decorating my house, . . . yeah, I think that about covers it! Starting to get into adventure photography. Have done geocaching, but a not in a while. It's…

I teach Middle School Intensive reading, Language Arts, sponsor the school yearbook AND help my husband run a Boy Scout Troop of about 25 kids. I have been teaching for about 15 years and have a Master's in Reading Education.

I have one of those yellow Eureka tents that has the fly on both sides. It was about $100 from Gander Mtn, and is perfect for my husband and me whether we are camping or hiking.

Having been on a week long trip with our scouts, don't make yourself crazy. Do figure the food will be cafeteria food for the main courses. I was pleasantly surprised at our camp having fresh salads and fruit. I would grab an apple at meals and eat them with peanut butter (I always keep squeeze pack handy). I just ate the…

Hiking a section or two of the AT is on our vacation list. My husband and yougest son did a small section last year at summer camp. I've done a couple of day hikes that intersected the trail, if that counts for anything.

That area has always been on my bucket list. Thanks for pushing it up a couple of spots!

No wonder Tigger has such a big smile with date like that!

I live in South Florida, so the winter is the perfect time for hiking here. The highs here are usually in the 70's here. Trade your summers for our winters! Happy Trails.

these websites have great recipes with things you can buy at the grocery store: wild backpacker and one pot wonders. www.minimus.biz is a great source for individual sized packages for all kinds of stuff. Sorry about lack of links, I am at school and have them bookmarked on my computer at home, but you should be able to…

It's on my bucket list!

Definitely no lifeguards at those gene pools!

Oh yes. We are very much a high adventure group, so we know a lot of the tricks. BUT it's always neat to see what other people do for fresh ideas. I really like the spaghetti recipe.

Anyone ? Anyone? Beuhler? Beuler?

The thing I dislike the most about South Florida is that the only change in terrain is going below the water level. It's just way too flat. Although (if you look at the pics on my trail food thread) it can be very beautiful as well.

OOhhh, that means your in the hill country. I'm originally from Houston and my sister went to Baylor. That is definitely God's country. I really miss the bluebonnets.

[/quote] I'm guilty of having the jar of bacon grease in the fridge. It's necessary for a good batch of cornbread (you need something to grease the iron skillet, right?)

I kinda grew up in the kitchen, but didn't really LEARN to cook, or realize how well I could cook (more accurately) until I started teaching cooking classes as a Home Ec teacher. I don't teach that anymore (budget cuts eliminating electives) but I love to cook. If I could recommend one book it would be Joy of Cooking. It…
