  • Hey there, I'm 30, 5'6'', 147 lbs. Also looking to get back to 125. Let's do this!
  • I think a tank and capris would be good for the most part. It takes me a while to warm up, so I would start out with a long sleeved shirt on top of that, then try to position a friend or family member around mile 1-2 to hand the extra clothing off to. An alternative is to make a set of sleeves. You can buy these, but they…
  • I've always been active, but haven't really focused on running as an activity until the last 3 years. I've done a handful of 5 and 10ks, 4 half marathons, 1 full marathons, and 2 team relays in that time. I'm training for a full marathon at the end of April. The 1st marathon that I did was actually my 2nd race ever. I…
  • I started yoga about a year ago when I noticed tightness that made it hard to run. Now I swear by it to keep limber from sitting all day. I was doing it two mornings a week for an hour each. Now I do the routine at home as often as I can. I focus on the hips and hamstrings. I have about a half hour routine for after runs…
  • I live in Oregon, if I didn't run in the rain I would never run. lol. The proper clothing makes a HUGE difference. I'm more comfortable outside in my running gear than I am with my normal clothes. Used to care that people looked at me, but then I realized that whenever I stared at people I immediately thought 'I should fit…
  • I have a really hard time drinking just water. Even a couple of cups makes me feel odd- lightheaded, dizziness, ill stomach feeling, and way too much peeing. Talked to my doctor about it and she said that since I'm hypotensive I could be setting off my salt balance. I drink herbal tea during the winter that doesn't seem to…
  • The 2 biggest things I did to keep me running during the winter is 1) invest in good clothing and 2) get a dog. It takes some trial and error to figure out the right layering but once you have the right clothes, non-cotton, water resistant, breathable, it's a lot easier to get outside in not that great of weather. And when…
  • I had the same problem this summer, it was too hot and there was always something else to be doing. I ended up running 2 maybe 3 times a week, 6.5 miles was my max, but I was bike commuting in to work. I did the half anyway, I took walk breaks every mile which was something I'd never let myself do before. I didn't start…
  • 2Nov11 Weigh in: 138.4 Net: gain Was good on the veggies for about half of the week :-/ Going to kick this week's challenge in the butt!
  • 6th year grad in engineering. Reaching the point where its hard and you don't care anymore is actually a great survival skill. You will always be given more work than you can possibly get done. You'll only have time for sleep, exercise, and/or a meager social life if you stop when your efficiency plummets. Don't wait until…
  • Count me in. My wagon has stopped and my oxen abandoned me.
  • Get a yoga ball to sit on instead of a chair. You can move around quite a bit and do balance exercises without it looking out of place.
  • I use rollers I bought off of bike nashbar for a decent price. It makes me work on my balance and cadence. I live in the rainy northwest and I'm too chicken to ride in wet conditions so I use it a fair amount from Oct-Apr. Can't use it on anything plush unless you want to burn a hole in the carpet, doesn't slip on linoleum…
  • I once got passed during a race by a walker...on a downhill stretch. lol. My fast pace is a 10 min mile. My easy pace is a 12 min mile. I've been wanting for years to get into single digits but long slow runs are better stress relievers for me. There is nothing wrong with being a slowsky! We're still moving and that counts!
  • I signed up for a marathon in April too! I've ran one before and did ok, ended up mostly walking the last 10 miles and it hurt a lot. My goal is that I feel better during this one regardless of time.
  • If you can run 3-4 miles comfortably then you'll do great. Find a training plan and build mileage by February. I usually only build to 10 miles, after that you're running on adrenaline. For the first time I recommend focusing on finishing, it will be an awesome experience.
  • Hey prof! I'm a 28 year old grad student and 15-20 lbs over my goal weight. I work 50-60 hrs a week and commute 2 hrs a day to school, there's just not enough time and motivation in a day :-/ Taking one day at a time and trying to make better choices become a habit is my focus, and hopefully the weight will come off in the…
  • I'll help you out! The small goals can be the hardest sometimes because it is so easy to fluctuate. Feel free to add me as a friend.
  • Ask for a to go box when you first get your meal. Put half of your meal in the to go box. If you are still hungry when you leave the restaurant grab a snack at home or carry some sort of healthy snack like an apple. But most of the time when I go out to eat the meals are quite large anyway and if I don't scarf my food down…
  • For me it helps to not focus on all the times I've failed, but be proud of myself that I'm trying. I celebrate every day I make the time to exercise or every time I turn away extra food I don't need. It's the negativity and the beating myself up for bad choices that makes me eat more. So I try to put everything in a…
  • Most of the time I bring food. But sometimes when I have trouble getting out the door I end up grabbing just snack food; an apple, bag of carrots, protein bar, then I'm starving when I get home and have dinner at a time that isn't the greatest for going on an evening run. Thinking ahead is key for me. I don't exercise…
