  • Agree with the above. I would say that you should listen to your body. If you feel long term fatigue, you are not consuming enough calories and should gradually up your intake (personally, I would add protein). If you feel fine, then I wouldn't worry about it.
  • "I was under eating and killing it at the gym and just feeling completely drained, miserable, hungry and light headed" There's your answer right there. If you are burning the calories, you need to put more in. Also, I don't know what you actually do when you're "killing it", but have you ever considered that you may have…
  • Even worse, they are pretty much all carbs. Complex carbs, but carbs the same.
  • Well done for both losing weight and sticking with it. It can be very frustrating when you put so much effort in and stay the same weight (or gain). I am with you on the body fat thing though. My main concern is reducing my body fat as I personally believe that it is a far better measure than weight as it is all to easy to…
  • Good luck and welcome to the fold. Please don't take this the wrong way, but It's interesting to read how as a sports scientist and PE teacher, even you get "lazy" (your own words) and have gained a few pounds. From a personal point of view, I also have these periods of lazyness (normally around Christmas when the weather…
  • I do it a slightly different way but along the same lines. If it's chicken, I weigh the chicken and then write it down. Next, I make my marinade and work out the nutritional value of the marinade. I then put the chicken into the marinade for however long. When it comes to cooking, I get my baking tray, put it on the scales…
  • I agree, it's difficult to fault fault with any of the above.
  • I can see your point but I think there is a limit to that line of thinking. If I go out on my bike for 2 hours and have a really hard work out, I can easily burn over 1000 calories. In that scenario, I have to put something back, otherwise I will very quickly burn out. Hvaing said that, even if I put back 500 calories, I…
  • All good advice above. One thing I would add is that I use body fat scales and concentrate more on that aspect. The reason for this is that it's easy to actually gain weight when you work out as I am losing fat but gaining muscle. Therefore, I could see weight gain but a reduction in body fat. That actually makes me feel…
  • Nothing wrong with eating before a workout as you will need to get some energy after sleeping. The only real rule here is to make sure it is easily digestible. Basically you are after something that is mainly sugar (quick carbs). As always, avoid processed sugar and go for natural derivatives. You're doing right with…
  • Nice one, very impressive. An average faster than 20mph is some going. I don't commute on my bike for a number of reasons. Firstly, it's 22 miles. Secondly, my work doesn't have showers and thirdly, I have to carry my laptop and a few other bits and pieces. As a result, I get out in the evenings and at the weekends. My…
  • All good advice so far but for a free alternative, my mum used to wrap some yarn around the underside to take up the slack.
  • Hmmm, opinions eh? :o) Well before recommending anything, I would need to know what do you want from it - i.e. do you just want an MP3 player, or do you want to do other things? If you answer the following questions, it will be much easier to narrow down your options: 1) What do you want the until to do? Do you just want…
  • Interesting that too much protein can be hard on the kidneys. I always though that the excess passes through the body. So, apart from having problems at the other end (if you get my drift), excessive protein shouldn't be an issues. It good advice though and unlike my personal experience, it comes from a professional.…
  • Yep, I agree totally. IMO if you are eating a balanced diet you can never eat too much protein. The main reason for this is most of the staple foods have considerably higher carb content than protein - If your protein is through the roof, the chances are your carbs will be as well. There are of course foods such as chicken…
