Haha! No, just a keen cook and we did a cookery course when we were in Thailand. It's difficult to always find the time but it's something I enjoy!

Thanks for your replies. I found a recipe for baked Thai fish cakes and made a stir-fry with minced chicken and holy basil and papaya salad. The one calorific dish was beef penang curry (made the curry paste ourselves). Plus some stir fried veg. To drink I made lychee martinis! All went down very well. :)

I made golabki (cabbage leaves stuffed with spiced mince) and baked with a spicy tomato sauce the other day. Often cooked Bengali style with onion, turmeric, whole cinnamon, dried red chillies and Bengali five spice (panch poran) and can be added to a dhal for a one pot veggie curry feast.

Wow, that looks fab!

I know, I diet to live, not live to diet. But yes I'm trying to navigate the fine line :)

Thanks for tip. Yes, unfortunately I also like tempura and one of my favourites is salmon skin rolls which are probably great for omega 3 but high on calories. I guess if I go over on cals it's better to have done so on 'good' cals rather than cream cakes even if scales stay the same... This is the menu!…

Yup, that must be difficult. Excuse my lack of knowledge about diabetes but is it just about having too many carbs? More and more places are catering to low carb /paleo diets but they're probably quite high fat. Ugh! So much fine tuning required!

Thanks all. Yes, certain friends I'm much more comfortable being open with about trying to lose weight but not always the case. Most of my weeks are like this though so the cutting back on the other days is probably the way forward rather than maintenance as I'd be stuck on that permanently if not!

I'm from London and trying to lose at least 10 lbs by mid September for a university reunion. I exercise and don't have a sweet tooth but I LOVE socialising which is not compatible with losing weight.

dutch all the time. if you can't afford half the bill in an expensive restaurant chooses somewhere else. Or take it in turns. My partner and I have been together for 21 years and were friends before we started going out together - on what was technically our first date we went dutch. Chivalry is genderless. Be polite,…

the key is planning - if you buy something and only need half for a recipe plan to cook something else with the rest so that it doesn't go to waste. also cook from scratch - use things like dried beans and i think frozen veg is better than canned (retains more nutrients) if fresh is too expensive - but do stick to…

some dry martinis (nice and dirty how I like'em) olives (see above) and a great big hunk (of cheese?) you did say nibbles didn't you? 70s disco and a karaoke machine...

i got it out of the library when I was about 15 or 16 cause I liked the cover- (a girl wearing heart shaped sunglasses) my dad was horrified and called it filth (had it not been a library book I think he would've ripped it to shreds) which made me want to read it more of course. At the time I didn't realise how awful the…

hello there - from London and I too like to cook stuff from scratch so would love to share recipes etc...sent you a friend request!

i wish I had your trouble! (and i'm quite surprised how so many people who want to lose weight can't eat that many calories when presumably they've eaten way more than that in the past to be on here...but anyway ho hum) I'm a student too. I second the pulses, avocado and nuts thing. But cut out the processed stuff - pies…

Sounds like he's insecure and he needs to resolve that not you so counselling for him on his own first might not be a bad idea. And then see whether you need to do it as a couple. Personally I find jealousy so unattractive. If someone doesn't think they're good enough for you, why should you? Although some compromise is…

It's like being in a night club! almost as much fun without the hangover. yes your backside will be sore and your lungs might burn (first class I did after xmas break and it was HARD) but you will feel greeeeaaat afterwards! Get set up properly and keep drinking water and go at your own pace but do push yourself a…

yes, a Londoner. Would be great to have some more UK support - feel free to add me. I love food, eating out and cooking and am partial to the occasional tipple (this is where my weight gain comes from rather than comfort eating etc..) so if you have that in common it would be great to be your MFP pal.

thanks guys - some lovely ideas that have got my mouth watering already. To start with have decided to add some to tonight's dinner (Chicken and mushroom risotto soup) instead of parmesan. Mmmm.....

Some of the chain restaurants do calorie controlled meals - check out Strada (Italian) (some dishes under 600 cals), Pizza Express plus also Wagamama, Yo Sushi and Ping Pong (dim sum) have calories on their website. there's a burrito place on Charing Cross road called Chipotle and again on their website you can find cals…

you're probably in shock - you may grow to like it in a few days. It will appear to grow really quickly (optical illusion of 1cm on 5 cm will appear longer than 1cm growth on 20 cm - does that make sense?) which is why short hair has to be cut so much more often as style grows out really quickly. I've had short, pixie cuts…

I agree the information is there but that has come after a lot of lobbying - but I also agree with Bluefoxer because fundamentally the food industry is out to make money - it will write 'Lower fat' in massive letters and that is not done for the benefit of the consumer it is done for the benefit of the company trying to…

one way of thinking about is what proportion of your daily/weekly calorie intake it comprises. So with 'bad food' (which for me means processed biscuits/cakes/crisps etc) I try and keep it between 10-20% of my daily intake. Fattening but healthy food like nuts/olive oil etc is a different matter - I'm not so bothered about…
