  • Yes. As long as I don't make my 'cheat' days like those of the 'Butterfield diet' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VWgwJfbeCeU
  • Thank you for posting this. It's exactly what I needed: the facts and how to deal with the metabolic slowdown. It's good to read something that states what is happening and why and what to do about it. Having an underactive thyroid, I am very wary of the effect being in deficit has on T4, T3 and cortisol levels. I also…
  • For up to two years after you quit smoking you are significantly more susceptible to developing hypothyroidism. It would be a good idea to get checked out for hypothyroidism just to be on the safe side, especially if you are experiencing symptoms. You may not be experiencing any noticable symptoms in the beginning though…
  • I totally agree with this. You know what to do so don't let other influence you and dissuade you from what you know is best. Perhaps you need to find some supportive friends. It doesn't sound like your family are being very supportive, knowing what you have been through. Be strong and don't let them get to you. You might…
  • It should be about 100 calories a mile for an average person. It might be slightly more if you are heavy (but not much). I find logging it as low impact aerobics is quite close.
  • Hi Matt. I don't have Grave's or diabetes but I have hypothyroidism so also find it very difficult to lose weight. I'm getting myself educated and finding medication that works so I am feeling sooooo much better. Also a chocoholic but I found after a few days of not having any sugary stuff, I don't need the chocolate…
  • You can add me if you like. I'm 40 (41 in a few weeks) and I've just recently started again. I'll send you a request. If anyone else wants to add me, you're welcome to
  • Try to eat foods as near to natural as possible (obviously you need to cook some things!). Avoid packaged and processed foods. Plenty of fibre and vegetables will help. Do eat fruit but not too much because of the sugar. Don't worry too much about the sugar in milk and yogurt but don't have too much. Dairy is good because…
  • I was also wondering if you have a thyroid problem. High cholesterol is very common in people with hypothyroidism and also people with a vitamin D deficiency (also remarkably common unless you live somewhere sunny). Might be worth getting checked out if you have any symptoms. If you feel fine chances are these don't apply…
  • Dietary cholesterol in eggs isn't going to add to your blood cholesterol levels unless you eat a shed load of them. Trans fats, sugar and refined carbs are likely to do more harm than a couple of eggs. Try to avoid processed foods. My father was told that diet makes very little difference to dietary cholesterol levels…
  • At our local train station there was a problem causing severe delays. The notice finished with "We apologise for any incontinence caused by these delays"...
  • That might be what you meant but it's not what you said and not how I interpreted it (or others by the look of it!). This is far clearer and less open to interpretation. And I agree with it! Wish you'd been clearer the first time. It would have led to far less arguing if everyone understood what you meant rather than what…
  • You do realise that your 90 minute full body compound workout is cardiovascular exercise as well as strength, don't you? Unless you're planning on not breathing... How people choose to increase their cardiovascular fitness is up to them. I do karate. That is quite an intense CV workout but it also strengthens muscles,…
  • I try to avoid the antibiotics but my daughter is just getting over such a bad case of tonsillitis that she's had to have a second course :frown: Our doctors are very good at not prescribing and I have been sent away before when one of the children has needed them (and consequently ended up in A&E!). I don't know if things…
  • Well, I'm 40 so definitely not similar age, and I'm not veggie, but I have a similar weight loss goal (although a little more than you) and I'm from the UK. You can add me if you like. Up to you
  • That would be about 6lb a month which is totally doable. But don't be disappointed if you don't quite make it. I'm sure you'll be pretty close if you don't. But yes, you could definitely do this if you eat right. Good luck :flowerforyou:
  • Definitely! It won't get rid of the fat but it will help increase your core strength and keep muscle while you are losing fat. It will help to pull that tummy in. You still need to eat healthily to get rid of the fat though. It won't go easily just with exercise if you are not eating healthily.
  • Wow! That's fantastic! I weigh just over 15 stone at the moment and I am aiming for somewhere around the 10 stone mark, maybe a little less (we'll see how it goes). It's great to see someone with similar goals achieving them. Thanks for sharing:flowerforyou:
  • You can add me if you like. I'm just starting again :)
  • Hi. I have 76lb to lose before I reassess where I want to be and I'm doing a similar thing to you. My first goal is 16lb which takes me to 14 stone and then it will be only 60lb more to lose. I'll be doing 10lb goals after that . I'm finding it difficult too due to thyroid problems. I'm not going to let it beat me though!…
  • I feel your frustration and it can't be easy with your conditions. Have you ever had your thyroid checked? Is your condition and autoimmune disease of some sort? If it is, you are more likely than most people to develop Hashimoto's thyroiditis which can result in an underactive thyroid. It could explain why you are having…
  • Hahaha! Yep, I agree with that description of 'nerd'. I'd say I was a geek too. A physics graduate that loves gaming and gadgets
  • Agreed! Armour can initially raise your antibodies if you have Hashimoto's but that usually sorts itself out once on a high enough dose and antibodies end up lower than before (surely a good thing!). I have no idea what this doctor was talking about! Next time ask for references to research papers showing what he is…
  • It's quite common to lose quite a few pounds the first week. If you lost 5 lb in the first week then you lost 7.5lb in the remaining 4 weeks. That is just less than 2lb a week which isn't a huge amount per week, depending on how much you have to lose. If you have a lot to lose you may well lose it a bit quicker at the…
  • That is absolutely amazing! Well done! You are truly inspirational!
  • I agree with the others that say to give your body a chance to catch up. Keep doing the good things and you should start to lose weight. If, after a few weeks, you are still not losing weight and you are confident that you are eating well you might want to consider getting your thyroid checked. For some people who are…
  • Thanks. I was planning on having rest days. I don't think I could do it every day, lol. Good idea about the snack. That's probably why I was feeling nauseous. I have just started counting the calories again too. I think I hadn't had enough. It's also very warm here at the moment - warm for me anyway  I will try some…
  • You're right. I would probably lose interest. I will see how it goes. It will be good to have my strength back
  • I have started again today. I have been off exercise and not eating great for quite a while due to not being well. Today's 30DS was much, much harder than I remember. I couldn't even do the girlie version of push-ups but I wasn't going to be beaten so I did them with my hands on the kitchen counter instead. It's harder…
