I've heard rowing because it works so many muscle groups. But honestly the best exercise is what ever keeps you interested and motivated. I enjoy biking but can sustain myself during the winter w/ running and lifting.

Go to your local bike shop. See what they recommend, what size frame fits you, what the component groups are for the different price points, ect. This will go a long way to helping you pick something even if it's from craigslist. You don't want to spend all that money on something that wont fit your needs down the road…

Whey will be the better option. It provides liquid protein that can be readily absorbed & used when you need it. It's generally way fewer in calories too. I Know you likely wont want to but I walk when my legs are sore after a workout. Just keeping them moving keeps them loose. When I stop they have more of a tendency to cramp up.
