After I was diagnosed with my thyroid condition, the specialist asked me how I first realized something was wrong. I told him I lost 25 pounds for no reason. His response: "That's probably a good thing for you." It really tore me up inside, but it was eventually wake-up call to get motivated and lose the weight for good.

Sounds like you have it all under control...you're doing everything exactly right. Carry on!:drinker:

I took a look at your food diary for the past week or so, and you log a lot of Homemade or Generic items into your food log. Are those items you entered yourself based on the recipe you use? Or did you just find those in the MFP database and use them? Your best bet is to either enter the complete recipe you use at home…

False, false, false. The only things that will up your metabolism (and only slightly) is exercise and carrying more muscle. If you could slow your metabolism simply by not eating breakfast, I would not have needed radioactive iodine treatment to stop my hyperthyroidism. I would have just skipped breakfast and would have…

I've heard a lot about brown rice being better than white rice, because the nutrition is more complete, but nothing to equate to a magic bullet. It does NOT have much more fiber per serving than white rice. I think brown rice is mentioned a lot as a whole grain because people are more familiar with rice than some of the…

I was a very heavy, almost chain-, smoker for about 10 years. I quit cold turkey when I had an a-ha moment while helping my son decorate the Christmas tree. I left him putting the ornaments on so I could go light up. And I realized my entire life was revolving around when I would have that next cigarette. I put out the…

Most ppl have already said that elliptical and running are not the same. I do both, and I agree. But my suggestion is to get some better clothes and get outside! There's nothing like running outside. I live in the desert, so my climate is nothing like yours in KS. But my favorite time to run outside is when the weather is…

I agree that you probably need to pay a little more for shoes that fit and work well for you. And there are so many different brands and styles available that you should definitely be able to find something that fits well and is comfortable in whatever color you want. Nothing wrong with buying shoes online, but you need to…

Grand Lux Cafe Margherita pizza (tomato, basil and fresh mozarella) for lunch. Their mini (tapas) size is about 340 cals. Very fresh, very filling and absolutely delicious!!

My husband is retired Air Force, and we see a primary on-base here in Las Vegas. But I was immediately referred to an off-base endocrinologist when I was diagnosed with Graves' disease in 2007. So there's no reason your primary should not refer you to an endocrinologist off-base. And it doesn't take long AT ALL for that…

Does she know she hurt your feelings...and did she apologize for it? If not, she's not a friend. You should not feel guilty. Everyone has those days, and one meal is not going to derail you. You gotta see the bigger picture. It's a lifestyle change, right?? That means it's FOREVER. So you're gonna eat junk once in a while.…

I pulled a muscle in my back in 1992, when my son was still small. The muscle spasms caused a pinchec Ciatic nerve, and it took over 18 months to heal. It didn't hurt all the time, but any exertion would cause it to flare up. Then I would be in pain for days. Prolonged walking, driving or heavy lifting caused problems.…

I've been seeing Endocrinologists for Graves disease for the past 6 years and have never had any problems. They generally test the TSH, T3, T4 every 6-8 weeks and run tests for antibodies every 6 months or so. And I'm currently on my 3rd Endo for this condition. Don't be so quick to jump into an alternative. Give the…

AMEN! I have Graves' Disease and recently underwent RAI to kill my thyroid. I was off meds for some time, and my appetite was out of control. Low carb has helped that situation, and I'm losing weight. I am currently down about 10 pounds and eating about 2500 calories per day on average.

I don't think one day of carbing out will kill your plan. I've been LC for just over 4 weeks now. Had 2 carb-out days where I ate/drank whatever I wanted and still lost about 8 pounds during that time. My plan is under 30g net per day. Hmmm...maybe I need another carb-out day soon! :drinker:

In 3 months I want to be FINALLY at goal weight and back to working out. A year from now, I want to STILL be at goal weight and back to running 3x per week and hiking every weekend. So DONE with this thyroid/RAI business!

Talk to your doctor. That's the best way to find out the best plan for you. Everyone is different, and what works for someone else may not work for you. I find that sodium intake has absolutely no effect on my blood pressure, something that I worked through with my doctor. But losing weight has made a HUGE difference. And…

I think if you can call what you're walking on a "trail" then you're hiking. If you're on a street or sidewalk, then it's a walk. I live in the desert and do most of my hiking in that terrain. There are a lot of flat trails in our area, but I still consider a walk down those trails a hike. I can't see that distance…

You're not crashing because of low carbs... You're crashing because of low CALORIES! Today you consumed about 300 calories before your binge in the afternoon. Yesterday you only ate a total of 650 all day. EAT! Having over 1000 calories "left over" at the end of the day is NOT a good thing.
-
Speaking only for myself, this statement is completely false. I've had 2 carb-out days in the past 3 weeks and have still lost about 6 pounds during that time. Yesterday, I ate whatever I wanted including alcohol, cookies, chocolate, bread and cereal. So far today, I do not resemble a ballon :)

It will help if you take a few pics each time: one facing forward, one of a side view and one from behind. As someone else mentioned, it also helps if you wear something more fitting. Good job wearing the same clothes in the last two, tho. You'll really see a difference when those clothes don't fit any more! :) You're…

Be aware that not all apps using the Polar Bluetooth HRM actually calculate using the heart rate. I also have a Polar Bluetooth, and the first app I tried did not calculate using HRM. I could do 30 minutes running or sitting on the couch, and it would show exactly the same thing. I was just plugging the time in and…

Currently, these are my favorite low-carb recipes. I've found that for me, it's best not to try and make subs for things like bread, pasta and rice. But I do love a great veggie recipe! Spinach & Mushroom Quiche 2.5 cups baby spinach - finely chopped 1 can mushrooms (you can use fresh but will have to saute them first) 4oz…

I started a low-carb program a couple of weeks back. My main reason was to combat side effects of a thyroid disease. The disease tends to create increased appetite, and the low-carb plan seems to help with that. I haven't been hungry at all. Of course, I'm eating about 2500-3000 calories a day. And a great side effect is…

I quit cold turkey. I left an open half pack on the kitchen counter and didn't touch them again except to throw them out months later. And my hubby was still smoking ( in the house ) at that time. I realized my enture life revolved around cigarettes. I planned my work day around when I would take the next break. I couldn't…

I'm not exactly sure what a pretty pants metabolism is, but none of those supplements makes much of a difference in metabolism. I have an autoimmune disease that causes my metabolism to speed up, and there's a green tea drink that I really like. I asked my doctor if it would compound the problem with my metabolism, and he…

Las Vegas, NV - I've been here for about 13 years now and LOVE  everything about this city. It's diverse cultures, friendly people, beautiful desert scenery, mountains surrounding the valley, 24/7 lifestyle... EVERYTHING! It's the best of both worlds. There is always something to do: shows, restuarants, movies, bars,…

As an adult, I have never liked dairy milk. I used it in cereal but didn't drink it. I switched to almond milk maybe 6 months ago. I like it much better in cereal and now drink it in my coffee instead of powdered creamer. Recently, my husband also switched to almond milk, and he is fine with it. He did mention that with…
