If you are competing and you feel/see a guy pull his hips like he is about either pull guard or jump into guard, you can some times get lucky and time an o uchi gari/ko uchi gari to co inside with them pulling and get points from the ref for a takedown. Quick and easy two points and infuriates your opponent. :)

That's interesting they were running both no-gi and gi at the same time. Generally, the tournaments around NC do No-Gi first, all divisions, then they go into Gi. Most of the ones around here though are through US Grappling with the exception of two NAGA and a couple New Breed tournaments. A couple suggestions from my…

Agree with j75j75, you should always wear a mouthpiece when sparring. Depending on your finances you may want to get your dentist to do a custom mouth guard for you. I would seriously consider it due to the expensive dental implants you are getting.

Are you talking about sparring or competitive fighting like a boxing/MMA match? If it is sparring, then it would more than likely be the instructor's/coaches call. We tend to have our students rolling/sparring with senior students/instructors within a couple weeks of training. If you are talking about competing in a…

The main ones around my area are US Grappling, NAGA, and New Breed. All 3 run events pretty decently. You are right about some of the local ones with no organization being behind them being interesting to put it nicely. Some local ones are run really well and are even used for raising money for a charity which is cool in…

Well even compared to other groups on MFP this one is not that large, so it kind of makes sense that the subset of a subset would be smaller. As for myself, we practice mainly a blend of traditional jujitsu, BJJ, submission wrestling, and Sambo. I occasionally train at an affiliate school that does straight BJJ for both gi…

This is just my opinion, for what is worth, when new people ask me about martial arts. 1. First I pretty much always recommend Jujitsu above all other styles. I feel it gives a person the most tools for any situation in terms of defense. However, the instructor's teachings and abilities need to be considered. While I am a…

High School wrestling in the U.S. tends to be folkstyle. Wrestling at the collegiate level is fairly similar with slightly different rules and tweaks. Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling have very different rule sets and you normally have to go through a wrestling club to learn those in the U.S. Practices are generally…

Agree with most of the posters, crank up your ipod and just go to work. Worrying about what other people are doing, looking at, etc. just takes away from your workout. The only time I talk to people is if they or I are asking if one or the other is done. Makes life easy :)

I have a membership there, and it's decent for a large chain gym. Facilities are generally pretty nice but it does get crowded especially during the week. I tend mainly go there on the weekends as I go to a different gym during the week. I can't speak for the kids program however. Good Luck :)

Quick hierarchy of how jujitsu came to Brazil: Tenjin Shin'yō-ryū Jujitsu(Had to wikipedia that one for Kano's start) -> Kodokan Judo-Dr. Jigoro Kano -> Judo/Prizefighting-Mitsuyo Maeda -> Start of Brazilian Jujitsu/Carlos-Start of Gracie Jujitsu System/Helio Gracie(Carlos & Helio were brothers) As for myself, it doesn't…

Anything by Amon Amarth for lifting
-
Just start trying with a weight you think you can do with proper form. Say you want to do 10 reps of deadlift, pick a weight you think you can hit 10 of. If you can't do 10 then knock the weight down a tad, if 10 was a breeze then up the weight.Lifting heavy is going to be different from everyone. The kind of general rule…

You might want to check with your instructor and see what he or she allows or prefers. Most of us go barefoot although a couple wear wrestling shoes, and I do myself occasionally. The only requirement is that you can't have worn the shoes there, meaning you didn't pick up gravel or other particles in the sole then track it…

It was a combo of things all happening within a week or two of each other that finally made me change my lifestyle. 1. My father, who is extremely obese, developed NASH(Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis), due his weight and well fat. 2. Literally being out of breath and my calves being on fire from walking outside my place to…

Here is a link to a video explaining how to do them: http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/detail/view/name/barbell-deadlift It's an exercise that hits more muscle groups than any other exercise you can do and is fairly effective at building a lot of strength. Someone out there can probably give you a more technical…

Wrestlers use it for cutting water weight, that or vinyl suits. Why someone who doesn't do competitive sports with weight classes would do it, I couldn't tell you.

The 30 minutes before is probably something like a piece of fruit, for energy. Your muscles are most receptive in nutrients for repair after your workout up to 30-45minutes afterwards. That's the "ideal" window but it's all basically about optimizing how quickly your body starts repairing your muscles. Again, generally,…

The strangest for me at least, which was more peculiar than anything, was one smaller guy maybe late 20's early 30's doing nothing but rear delt exercises for over a hour. Never seen anyone hit their rear delts so much at one time and he would do this multiple times a week. It was just odd to me.

You forgot the black hood and booties to be a master ninja :) I have practiced martial arts for just about 21 years with my main concentration in Japanese Jujitsu, Sandan/3rd Degree Black Belt, but I also do Brazilian Jujitsu, Blue Belt No Stripes, as well. I agree with pretty much all the points the op posted with regards…

It's a proposal in it's infancy stage from the mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is not a ban nor has anything to do with Michelle Obama of all people O.O There can be legitimate criticisms of initiatives like these but come on now, that's reaching pretty far.

We generally use 3-6 months of constant training before recommending someone jump into a tournament. BJJ/Sport Jujitsu/Judi tournaments are divided up by weight and experience/rank so its a pretty easy way to make sure people are against appropriate level opponents. We just want to make sure they have a good base before…
