  • At the beginning of the year, I set out to lose 70 lbs by the end of the year. Surpassed that in May. I still want to lose another 5-15 lbs to find an ideal weight and then start adding muscle to increase my ideal weight, but I've been maintaining for a while to give my body a rest. This is definitely do-able. Just be very…
  • Bruce, didn't your doctor say, 'no more swimming', a while back? Did he change his mind? Or did he just mean no competitive/fast hard-core swimming?
  • Great news, Bruce!
  • Wearing my elbow brace, I did a slow two miles with a couple of laps of kickboarding thrown into the mix to convince myself that I was giving my elbow a rest. After the first mile, I was ready to stop at any point if there was any elbow pain but I was OK, just not very fast. Maybe I will be able to do the 3.1-mile (5k)…
  • And not always at the same time!

  • Did a very slow 1.6 miles. Elbow started to get a little uncomfortable so I stopped short of 2 miles. Next time I will do 1 mile. If everything feels fine, I might try another half-mile, but even if I feel fine after 1.5 miles, I will not push it beyond that. Determined not to let this become a chronic injury. Probably…
  • Wow, great job, Kida!
  • Swam a slow mile today. Wore a brace on my elbow and it felt OK. Maybe I will try 2 miles on Tuesday, but stop at the first sign of any pain. First time swimming in a salt-water pool. My gym had a fire alarm go off so I went to one of the sister gyms. I didn't like the pool better (slippery walls made the flip-turns a…
  • Finally got in to see the sports medicine doc today (instead of the physician assistant at the orthopedic surgeon). He says I can get back in the pool and even do the 3.1-mile open-water swim in a couple of weeks as long as I'm not in too much pain that I need to compensate with poor form. Also does not want me to work on…
  • Do you have high blood pressure? If not, don't sweat it. If you do have high blood pressure, do you exercise? Sweating is a great way to deal with sodium in your diet.

  • Great job! I love Chesapeake Bay, by the way. Did you used to She-crab soup where you grew up?
  • So, how did it go? We're all on pins & needles here ...
  • Trouble sleeping can also be an indication of over-training. Take a few days off, see how you feel then.
  • After a second 10-day period of no swimming, I decided to try a slow easy mile swim to see how my elbow was. After 1,000 yards, I was starting to feel a little something so I stopped. It was not yet red or hot and was not actual pain yet but I did not want to push it. I think it is getting better.
  • Another possibility to consider is exercise induced anaphylaxis. Have you increased the intensity of your work-outs recently or been overtaining? I've had exercise-induced asthma and very bad exercise-induced rhinitis at times, all of which are related. A friend of mine is a long-distance biker and he's had it. His doctor…
  • There are two different options, a time-based approach, which is more common, and the distance based approach, which I prefer. Time-Based Approach: Keep doing what you're doing, but keep track of how long you're resting between laps, then make it consistent, then start decreasing the rest time. To then take it a notch…
  • My black TYR resistance suit faded to light gray very quickly. I will get a Speedo next.
  • Wow, I feel for you, Bruce. Don't let it get you down. I've started cycling and I love it.
  • Welcome. You've definitely chosen the best group on MFP. Very nice and encouraging people here.
  • True, true, true. Very true.
  • You gotta do what your health-care professionals (HCPs) tell you, but, personally, I think aerobic exercise deserves rest and rebuilding every bit as much as so-called strength/resistance training. Swimming certainly involves strength and swimming against the resistance of the water and gravity. But I do not know anything…
  • I despise exercising indoors on a machine. It is so much nicer to be outdoors enjoying the scenery and fresh air. The fact that it is actually a better work-out is the best of all possible worlds.
  • Gee golly gosh willirkers, Stephen, aint you done good!!! Sorry I missed this thread all this time. You're trying different things and looking for something you really enjoy, which is extremely important. I am a huge believer in self-directed fitness. Lots of good advice from others but you're the one that has to do it and…
  • Stayed out of the pool for 10 days to let my epicondylitis (tennis & gold elbow) heal. Swam a very slow mile and a half and was starting to notice some tricep soreness. As it started moving more toward the elbow, I stopped and the lower tricep was red and warm. Never saw that before. Guess I'll be out of the pool for a…
  • Thanks, Good luck with your goals. The key for me has been prioritizing increasing fitness. Most of my work-outs have been long-distance swimming, which involves constantly stretching the core, which might explain why I have not had any problems with loose skin. After about 75 lbs of loss, I was just beginning to see the…
  • 24.83 BMI. I'm no longer overweight according to the BMI. Yay. At one point that was my goal, but now it is only a milestone. I still have to figure out what my so-called 'ideal weight' should be. I'll go down in 5-lb increments and see what that looks like in the mirror, and then at some point I'll start eating at a…
  • Thanks for the clarification. Less of a rush to get a HRM.
  • Hey, look at that, stephenrhinton is all cool now. ;-)
