From the graphic accompanying the article: 1. You think about carbs 2. You begin secretign insulin 3. Insulin tells your body to store fatty acids and keeps you from burning it as energy. By this logic, we render ourselves unable to lose weight by just THINKING about carbs (and gain when we actually eat them). Really? This…

Couch to 5k! Do it. You won't regret it.

I bought 2 boxes of Samoas from my little cousin when I was visiting family in Hawaii. My bag was 51 pounds on the return trip and I had to move stuff around to avoid paying an overweight bag fee. Did I just move something, say my curling iron, over to my carryon? Noooo. My BFF and I at BOTH BOXES OF SAMOAS AT THE SKYCAP…

Things I do: 1. make it in a rice cooker, just like rice. Sometimes I make it with chicken broth, lemon juice, etc. 2. toast it in a frying pan before cooking gives a nutty taste. 3. Mix it with minced kale, roasted garlic, and whatever veggies you have and serve cold as a salad.

It's not soup, but a good, healthy option is basic Creole red beans & rice (with brown rice or quinoa). I use a traditional recipe (you could probably Google it) and triple the veggies. E.g. instead of 1/4 red bell pepper, use the whole pepper; 3 stalks of celery instead of 1. It's delicious, filling and only about 250…

This is also true. Sometimes the "weight gain" part of puberty kicks in before the "growth spurt" part. Some kids are just chunky until they're 13 or so, then the summer before 8th grade they suddenly lean out. No harm in establishing healthy habits now though, especially with her not eating fruits and veggies now.

I second The Sneaky Chef! You can also hide a lot of veggies in chili, red beans & rice, meatloaf, and soups. Start working on portion control now. The best general eating advice I ever got in my 20s I wish someone told me when I was 12: As long as you eat healthy most of the time, you can TASTE whatever you want. Cake?…

This made me LOL at my desk. :) I am in my law school BFF's wedding on May 12 and my college BFF's wedding on May 25. May 12 wedding attire is any black cocktail dress and terrible shoes. There are 9 bridesmaids and I've always been one of the heaviest of the group, but this time I want to be one of the hottest! The May 25…

I love this. What a great way of thinking of it!

It's hard to make a big change like this and you should be SO PROUD of yourself for making the decision to get healthier! Getting healthy and changing what you eat is as much mental as it is physical. For me, I OBSESSED over food my first 3 or 4 weeks after deciding I needed to make a change. Tough it out. It gets easier.…

I won't feel like I've reached my goal until these three things happen: 1. I am a solid size 6/small 2. I feel comfortable in a bikini in Vegas, and 3. I don't have to wear Spanx with my bridesmaid dress for my BFF's wedding in May!

If people are just starting out or starting back, they absolutely should talk to a doctor. Isn't that what every health & fitness website, exercise machine, product, etc says in their disclaimers? I agree with OP on that 100%. Talk to an expert. I'd even venture to say that a trainer isn't perfectly reliable for advice;…

Couch to 5k is the best. I started it in August, ran my first 5k on Thanksgiving and am doing a half marathon in 7weeks. The I always hated it before, I never thought I'd love running.

I've was looking for some less-chemical, more organic and wheat-free options when I came across this thread last week. I put a lot of the recommendations to the test for this week's runs. Everyone here is so awesome about sharing their ideas that I thought I'd share my experience too. I did two 4.5 mile, one 5 mile and one…

I bought this Nathan handheld: http://www.nathansports.com/our-products/hydrationnutrition/handhelds/quickdraw-plus I won't lie, it's a 22oz bottle and it's really bulky. But, it has a strap to tighten onto my hand so I don't actually have to hold it, it has a pocket for some cash and chomps or Beans, and it's hot pink. :)…

I get them too, on my shins and only after increasing distance or intensity. The advice nurse says they are broken capillaries and I'm probably anemic and should take an iron supplement; my trainer says I need to stretch with a foam roller after every run. I'm starting both next week to see if it makes a difference.

My squishy midsection and jiggly thighs don't know that I'm not counting calories on a "cheat day," so I make sure to get in some extra exercise before, or at worst the day after, I have a big, high calorie meal. Like the first responder said, you're only cheating yourself. I do, however, allow for small treats a couple…

Just for the record, if her boyfriend, knowing he didn't have vast sums of expendable cash, hadn't agreed to be in the wedding without first asking about the wedding costs and honestly, checking with his girlfriend (the OP), they wouldn't be in the position of having to tell the bride and groom about their financial…

Look, it's their wedding.... It's a big deal to the bride and groom and (hopefully) the only wedding they'll get, and they are entitled to hold it where they want. They'll just have to understand that some of their guests may not be able to attend. If the couple can afford to put the wedding party in rooms, that's…

1 pound a week is a good guideline. If you have much more than 20 pounds to lose, you'll find the first 20 comes off rather quickly (a lot of people can drop the first 20, of say 100 pounds they want to lose, in 8-10 weeks). If you have ONLY 20 pounds to lose, it will be harder and you should give yourself more time. E.g.…

Looking GREAT Meg! I can't believe how much you've lost in your waist. Your dedication and drive is an inspiration to a lot of people here. Keep up the good work!

:( I finally went to see my doc on Friday, and he gave me some meds and said no running until after I finished my course of steroids and stop coughing hard. 5 days. Boo. So I'm off the road until Wednesday or Thursday. He's a 40 year, 40-mile-a-week runner, so I pretty much have to listen to him. He also said it probably…

I'm doing Hal Higdon's as well for my March 11 half. I looked at the Runner's World beginner program but it was a little advanced for me: http://www.runnersworld.com/rwdcaspdf/HalfMarathon.pdf I just started running in August, have only done one 5k and am currently at 4.5 miles max. You are more advanced than I am so it…

Funny you mention composting, because after I make the stock, I fish out the veggies and it all goes in the compost. Sometimes a little chicken gets in there but so far it hasn't ruined my compost or my veggies. ;)

Do you have a gluten sensitivity or allergy? If so YES you need to get serious! One of the common side effects of a gluten allergy is GI distress and weight gain. Which are both gross and counterproductive to your weight loss efforts. (If you're not actually allergic or sensitive, talk to your doc about cutting it out of…

A US citizen visiting Canada can carry a hunting rifle over the border, but you have to declare it. Failure to declare may be treated as an attempt at smuggling. If you didn't declare it, you're lucky they didn't confiscate it and/or charge you with a crime. If you did declare it, you probably got an a-hole customs…

If everyone who sees a problem with the way the country is going just moved away, there's not much chance of changing it, is there? Keep doing what you're doing: reading, voting, volunteering, exercising your first amendment right to voice what you do and do not like about how things are being run (a right a lot of people…
