Marathon Training burnout
I'm 5 weeks out from my first marathon (June 22) and burnt. I don't look forward to long runs or speed work, I've stopped cross training altogether, and I've let my diet go to hell. My last 3 miles of Sunday's 20 were awful, mentally and physically. Can I get a pep talk? Advice? Links to articles? Or maybe just share some…

Advice needed: Training with Injury/Illness
I was so excited when I realized that I'd made it through the first 6 weeks of marathon training without illness or injury! And then I pulled/tore something in my calf on 3/30. And then I got sick on 4/1. So I'm playing the game of doctors wanting to wait and see how my calf does on its own before ordering an MRI, while…

Diet (or Fitness) Advice You Love to Hate
What's the piece of diet advice you love to hate? Something ridiculous, untrue, or a blanket statement that really doesn't apply to everyone. Mine, read on a blog this morning: Giving in to cravings is a good thing. "Sometimes allowing yourself to give in to your cravings can be better for you down the road...If you're…

Keeping fit on an injury: need new workout ideas!
Hi friends! I'm on month 3 recovering from a sprained hip and knee, and I am getting seriously bored with my workouts. On my GP, ortho and physical therapist's orders, I can't do any running, hard walking, jumping, squats, lunges, or anything that puts too much pressure on my lower joins. I've been doing the stationary…

Zig-zagging calories - tips, myth-debunking, confirmation PL
I've been stuck at 138-141 for about 2 months, and I'm headed to Hawaii next week (!!), so on my trainer's advise and doc's approval, I'm zig-zagging calories for the next 7 days to try to break this plateau. I'm using this calculator: http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm (My stats are this: 32 years…

24.75 down (with pics)! Second attempt at posting. :D
Whew. It took me all day to get the courage to actually post PICTURES, then another 2 hours to learn how to do it, but here goes: This was me on Memorial Day last year. I thought I looked totally cute that day. Seeing this picture is what made me realize I had to do something about my weight. I was around 160-165…

A million post-race questions! (Half marathon)
I did my first half marathon yesterday. Yay! 2:17! My goal was 2:40. I ran harder, faster and farther than I ever have, and my body is making me pay for it today. As soon as I could get out of the cluster-f*** of the post-race expo, I got into an icewater bath for about 20 minutes with my husband topping off the…

SV and NSV!!
SV - I met my #2 goal! To hit 140 by 3/1. Only 2 benchmark goals left! But even better.... NSV - I have literally no suits that fit. I had to go to court on Wednesday, and Tuesday night was ripping through my closet because all 8 of my suits are too big now! Like, 2 or 3 sizes too big. It was not so great for court…

Vapur & Platypus bottles
Has anyone used these before? I hate running with my empty bottle on a long run. The idea of being able to collapse my water "bottle" and shove it in my armband when it's empty is nice. Most of the reviews out there are from backpackers and frequent travelers. Any runner reviewers?

last-minute shedding of water weight
Hey girls, What are some of your tips for last minute (day before vacation, etc) shedding of water weight? I cut out salt, increase water a little, and eat a ton of asparagus since it's a natural diuretic. I try to cut out alcohol but that airport bar always gets me. Any other tips?

tricks for last-minute shedding of water weight
I know we work hard every day to lose weight, but I think everyone can appreciate a little boost right before a big event or trip! What are some of your tips to drop some water weight or bloat at the last minute (day before vacation, day of event, etc)? I cut out salt, increase water a little, and eat a ton of asparagus…

Afraid to get rid of my "fat" clothes
I am a ritual purger; I clean out my drawers and closets 2 or 3 times a year and get rid of everything that doesn't fit, is worn out, that I don't wear any more, etc. My last purge was last spring. Ironically, I got rid of a ton of really nice clothes I've been hanging on to for years, because I thought I'd never be a size…

Starting back running after illness
Hi friends. I caught a nasty cold last week and thought I'd try to "run it out" on the first day of symptoms (Wednesday morning); my nurse cousin told me this was a bad idea and my body confirmed. I'm on day 7 of this cold now and haven't had much time for actual rest with the holidays and traveling. I'm back home now but…

2012 Challenges: looking for participants
Hi friends! In 2011 I learned that I do best when I have a "challenge" I'm trying to follow, so to help me meet my Q1 2012 goal of "size 6 and no pooch," I'm going to do a challenge every week. Who wants to join me?? Here are my challenges for the rest of January: 1/9 through 1/15: 5 servings of vegetables per day 1/16…

Unsolicited product review: SodaStream.
*This is NOT a paid review.* Husband bought me a SodaStream Fizz for Christmas. I don't drink regular soda but I love my Pellegrino and husband is practically addicted to diet soda, and we end up stacking cases of soda and bottles of bubbly water under the breakfast bar between our living room and kitchen. So tacky. Also,…

Introduction: The last 15
Hi ladies! I still have about 15 to go (not 10) but I am down to an 8, feeling skinny and more fit, and back in Normal range for body fat. So here goes! 1). Goal: down to size 6, lose the "pooch" and be bikini-ready by my birthday, March 18. 2). Pledge: cut out alcohol entirely, follow my half-marathon training plan…

Christmas dinner - what are you making?
I love that Christmas is less than a week away! For those of you cooking dinner or helping, are you planning to cook your traditional (high fat, high calorie, high carb...) favorites, or are you sticking to your personal meal plan? Or something in between? I'm hosting, and I'm sticking on plan with respect to menu items…

Needing more motivation!
Hi All. I have a problem with lasting motivation; I always have. Every new job, school, exercise plan, etc., I am super excited about for the first 4-5 months, but then I lose interest. I start slacking off and not caring. As far as exercise goes, it's happening right now. I hired a trainer in June, started running in late…

Losing weight but not inches -- losing muscle?
Hi MFPers! In the last 2 weeks I've dropped 3 more pounds, but my measurements and body fat percentage have stayed the same. I get the feeling I'm burning muscle. I run 5 days a week and strength train with a personal trainer once a week. Most weeks I also strength train one more day a week. I eat a diet low in carbs and…

Bad Health Habits Your Parents Passed to You
Spending last weekend with my extended family made me realize how thankful I am to NOT be spending Thanksgiving with the crazy lot of them. :) Just kidding family! What it did get me thinking on was some of the bad health habits my mom passed to me that have been really hard to break. Specifically, fad diets, love of…

Carlsbad/Oceanside CA Joggers: Oceanside Pier Turkey Trot
I am hoping to run the Oceanside Pier Turkey Trot this year and I'm SO excited for my first 5k. Unfortunately, my friends are either out of town that day or the kind of people who hate running. I don't mind doing it alone, but it would be more fun with other people. I'd love to get a group of slow jogging (like, 5.5 mph)…

Alternative Cardio While Stress Fracture Heals?
I'm pretty sure I have a stress fracture in my left leg near the ankle. It bothers me when I run, point my toes (including swimming), jump on it, or wear heels. As a recent convert to running, I can't remember what I did for exercise before other than swim and take a dance class here and there (off limits now). I DO recall…

Introduction!
Hi! I'm Christine, I'm new(ish), and I'm excited about taking full advantage of my MFP membership. My main issue is and always has been eating too much and eating the wrong foods not exercise. I'm glad to have found a place where people can discuss their setbacks and celebrate their accomplishments. I have 2 dress sizes…
