The problem is, when I do a lot of push ups, it really hurts in my arms and shoulders. I don't like that! I'm much more comfortable just running.

Bodyglide, yes, but it could also be the top. Look for a top with minimal seams and smooth fabric. Even better is a form-fitting top. You might try something like this:…

A friend of mine has a similar mantra: JITFO. He got it while running the Boston Marathon in 2012 (the infamous hot year). Here is a guy who was dreaming of running Boston for years, *finally* qualifies, and then runs the race in 88-degree heat. By Mile 15 or so it was a death march. As he was limping along towards the…

"Wow, you are one sexy, hot, fast runner!" -- from the race director as she gave me the photo in my profile pic, after winning my first-ever 5K.

Better a negative split than a death march to the finish! That said, a half is a tough nut to crack. When you do it right, you can really run hard for almost the whole race. It's not like a marathon where you really need to hold back. Of course you need to hold back a little but it's possible to complete a half and be…

Sorry to hear it. That said, OF COURSE you can sign up in March. We all want to see you make it back, and you WILL make it back!
-
That is pretty cool. Looks like Oklahoma could use some runners though! I'd definitely try it if it came through North Carolina!

I love endurance running, and I've gotten pretty good at it: I can run a 10K in less time than it takes you to run 5K. I did it by doing a lot of long, steady runs. I don't really understand why people who don't want to do endurance running sign up for an endurance run. If you like sprinting, I would suggest signing up for…

Nope, they don't work for me either. At my peak last fall I was doing them at about 2:50, with a 2-minute rest (not 2:50 as Yasso would have you do). My best marathon is 3:22. None of the shorter distances work as marathon predictors for me. I do think I have a faster marathon in me, maybe even a 3:10. But 2:50? I don't…

Thanks for the thoughtful responses, everyone. Sounds like this really is an "inbetween" workout. Seems to be effective keeping me injury-free and building my upper-body strength a bit, so I plan on keeping it up for the foreseeable future.

Yay! You go!
-
Hmm... yeah, it's really kind of inbetween those extremes. The first set is sometimes tough only because I'm not warmed up for that exercise. Usually the middle is the easiest. I think this might have to almost be considered a hybrid workout.

I'm primarily a runner, but just wanted to chime in to say I lift 3 times a week, doing full body workouts (mostly circuit training). I have really had very little trouble integrating lifting with running (I run 50-70 miles per week). The only major adjustments I do are to reduce my leg workouts on weeks when I have races…

Hmmm... I think my 250-mile goal for February may have been a tad optimistic. Took a much-needed rest day this weekend; now tapering for a saturday trail marathon. We'll see. Still very much on track to complete my first 50-mile run at the end of March, though -- that's much more important to me than meeting a particular…

A great tip that I saw in action from my friend who is a dog owner (assuming you have no pepper spray, etc): as the dog approaches, face it, stand tall, and firmly yell "NO!" and "GO HOME!" Don't turn away from the dog until it has started to head away. I've seen him do it a few times and done it myself. It really works.…

I think I fixed it -- let me know if there are any problems!

I know, seriously! I've never run that far with wet feet but that sort of thing is pretty common for trail races in this area. I paced a friend (from North Carolina) in the Western states 100-miler and after the big river crossing around Mile 80 he was surprised to see that everyone stopped to change shoes. He just kept…

Pilot Mountain Payback on February 15. My first trail marathon -- looking forward to it. Apparently there is a calf-deep creek crossing within the first mile. Should be quite a thrill (and a chill!).

"Dave" is short for "David." "Munger" is my dad's last name, and his dad's last name, and his dad's last name...I think it goes back a couple hundred years. Some sort of bizarre family tradition.

Oops... Just notice a bug in the sheet where this week's miles weren't being added to the monthly tally. I fixed it now and posted an update. Great job, everyone!
-
Yeah, I'd like to think I could do Umstead faster than that, but I wanted my first to be on a course that was so tough that I wouldn't be worrying about my time and just finishing would be a major accomplishment. There are quite a few other small ultras around here as well. It's different from the west coast but we have a…

Seriously. I'm not a member of the local Y because it is too expensive...$66 a month! But it's a very nice facility!

It's possible if you do it; it's not possible if you don't do it. Most people don't do it, either because they never start or they get injured. I'd strongly recommend taking it slow and easy, and combining with runner-specific strength training. If you feel a small injury coming on, don't ignore it -- seek advice on how to…

Not many people can run 9 miles at 9mph! Every calculator is a little different: Straight up 3-mph walking versus running 6 mph for 9 miles I get a 150-calorie difference using this calculator. http://www.healthstatus.com/perl/calculator.cgi In reality it is going to depend on what the terrain is like, your fitness level,…

True. You could also run 5K faster if you just ran it 500 meters per day. Even faster if those 500 meter intervals were spaced several days apart! Give me enough time and I could do a 5K in under 15 minutes :drinker:   Seriously though, the point is not to run your fastest in each race, it's to figure out…

You burn about as many calories walking versus running the same distance -- mainly because walking takes a lot longer!

"Harvard Health Publications suggests women eat at least 1,200 calories daily and men get a minimum of 1,500 calories a day unless supervised by their doctors." That's different from saying that the minimum base amount of calories before exercising is 1,500. I typically eat from 2,200 to 3,000 calories per day. I'm sure…

Really? MFP set my goal at 1,490 (sedentary lifestyle before exercise) and I am 6'2". I would think someone of average height would be right in that range.
-
Yep, you can eat those back. Just be really careful about monitoring your calorie consumption -- track EVERYTHING, and you will still lose weight if you hit your target. If you find it is not working, you might need to "adjust" your exercise calories. I have set up my own exercises that are about 30% lower than what MFP…
