  • If you do treadmills a lot I would keep separate PRs for Treadmill and outdoors. Heck, runners already keep separate track and road PRs, not to mention trail / cross-country PRs. What's one more set?
  • Congratulations, and welcome to the community of runners! Make sure to join the "long distance runners" group on MFP.
  • Awesome! Sounds like you are ready to move a little farther forward when you line up for your next half. Though for a marathon I'd suggest lining up a little farther back than your "true" pace because everyone tends to start out too fast in a marathon. Better to "lose" 30 seconds a mile in your first couple of miles than…
  • Weird. I got another group notification (for a post in Long Distance Runners) but not this one.
  • So are group notifications actually working? That would be awesome. The updated spreadsheet for this month is below. It looks like I won't be making my mileage this month, for a good reason: I'm going on a three-day backpacking trip this weekend! Keep it up, folks! And I'd appreciate it if someone would reply to this so I…
  • Not counting getting dragged to a Billy Joel concert by my dad I believe it was Foreigner around 1980.
  • If you have insurance you can go to any urgent care facility or something like "Minute Clinic" to get the vaccine. It is free.
  • I got the flu a month before the Boston Marathon in 2013 -- it totally messed up my training and I finished 30 minutes slower than my goal time. Haven't missed the flu shot since -- and haven't gotten the flu since.
  • The MFP run options are a little weird. Personally I find they don't give accurate calorie counts for me anyways, so I created my own exercises just for me to log my workouts (Dave running, Dave running hard, Dave running easy). I log the time and then post the distance and pace in a comment on my feed. I'd suggest keeping…
  • Sounds to me like you are ripe for a PR. Higher mileage will be a massive help on the half marathon. I would suggest doing a mile or two tomorrow at your goal pace, just to help "dial in" to your half marathon pace. One nice thing about half marathons is if you go out a little too fast and end up slowing down at the end,…
  • So apparently if you turn on "Notify me when people respond to discussions I've participated in" you get a whole bunch more notifications. I'm trying this now.
  • Sure, why not? I'm sure corrine has a great...personality!
  • I'm testing to see if this shows up in my recent conversations. It's looking like stuff in groups doesn't show up there, which is not good!
  • Fixed up the spreadsheet and updated. Looks like folks are doing quite well. Some nifty new features on the forums -- now we can put in real links! Click here to go directly to the spreadsheet! And images can be inserted directly without loading to a different site. Here is this month's image!
  • Today's race results show that "winning" is just as much about who shows up as it is about running fast. I ran 17 seconds faster at the US Masters 5K today (18:42) than I did last week and finished 79th overall and 11th AG. Humbling!
  • This is last october's thread! For October 2014 go here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1462565-the-octochallenge-october-2014
  • If you can make it 4 miles on the treadmill you'll be fine. As others have said, it's easier outside. Give it a shot. Also, you may want to get fitted for new running shoes; having the proper shoes can make a huge difference.
  • Stretch. Sit down with friends for coffee. Try to eat some carbs and protein. Then the next day I always make sure to do an easy recovery run. This, more than anything, even if it hurts, will substantially alleviate the DOMS that typically appears on the following day.
  • If you have a 4.7-inch iPhone, this looks like a really slick solution. You'd have to ditch your old case though: http://www.amazon.com/Armband-SUPCASE-Fitting-Running-Flexible/dp/B00MOOFDMA/ref=pd_cp_cps_0
  • What do you use it for on your runs? Are you using the apps/navigation features or do you just have it along for emergencies? If the latter, you might want to consider getting a cheap pay as you go phone for that purpose. Otherwise, I got nothin. I think a spi belt *might* work though; mine fits the iphone 5 with a lot of…
  • Looks like a bunch of folks pulled through and hit their September goals! Congratulations to everyone who made it; Here's to an even better October!
  • Yeah, the nose-breathing thing sort of scares me. I think what I'm going to do is this: I looked up the race results from last year and about 40 people finished faster than my PR. So my plan is to try and line up with about 80 people in front of me. That's WAY farther back than I usually line up, but this is also an…
  • Sounds like you could do it if you started training now. If your marathon is in early May then you would want to start your formal training about 18 weeks before that -- around January 1. Between now and then, as ZeninTexas says, you want to gradually build up your total weekly mileage to a minimum of 25 miles per week. As…
  • The October Challenge is ready; Join in here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1462565-the-octochallenge-october-2014
  • You can run a 9-minute mile now. My suggestion is to set your sights on an 8-minute mile. The best way to get there is just to build up your weekly mileage. Once you are up to 20-30 miles per week and can run an 8-minute mile, then you can start thinking about speed work.
  • You are probably not tracking your eating accurately, or not tracking your cardio accurately. I have found that for me, MFP overestimates my burn by about 30-40 percent, so I created my own exercises with more-accurate burns. Once you track your food as accurately as possible, the next thing to do would be to just decrease…
  • According to this line of reasoning, we'd need to see a *doubled* HM time of 1:54 -- six minutes slower than that equals the coveted 2-hour marathon. That corresponds to a 57-minute half, which sounds somewhat more doable. Of course, that means picking up the pace from 4:27 per mile to 4:20 for an entire half marathon,…
  • Updated the spreadsheet. Looks like a lot of folks are close but maybe haven't updated their miles. Just today and tomorrow left! My mileage, on the other hand, is up-to-date but it looks like I won't make my goal this month. I had a 5k on Sunday instead of a long run and that made the difference, especially considering my…
  • LungStrong 5k in Cornelius, NC: 18:59, which turned out to be good enough for first overall. Glad the guy who won it last year didn't show up this time -- he ran a 15:01!
