  • Try your local library, yoga journal podcast (or others), and you tube videos - all are free, so you're not out anything. Also try going to a class, I think you'll get a lot out of it.
  • Check this out, quite funny actually: http://www.yogadawg.com/quiz5.htm
  • Pretty much said it. Anyway, I've tried: vinyasa, power, anusara, ashtanga, viniyoga, integral (I think that's what it was), plenty of mixed styles generally called "Hatha", and Iyengar. The classes I go to now are almost all Iyengar. I'm someone that likes to know details - the how and why of a pose. I like to experiment…
  • Side effects may include: happiness, calmness, flexibility, strength, balance, change in attitude, change in diet, change in sleep patterns, also a change in how you spend your money  When I started, I was having daily headaches due to tension in my neck (combo of straight cervical spine and tight trapezius) . I…
  • Have you told your teacher?
  • I would suggest doing what you know and taking it slow, if there isn't a qualified teacher that you really trust in your area. Even if you find a teacher, I would be helpful to him/her to know what causes irritation. Basically the one rule is: don't move into pain. Discomfort is ok for most people.
  • Try your local library, youtube, and Yoga Journal podcasts - all free. If you have a subscription to Netflix or similar, try some that way. I enjoyed Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden videos.
  • You might have the ability to sit still or keep your mind quiet - both of which are extremely rare. Everyone has something.
  • Have you tried pushing up from a bolster? Lie over a bolster to give yourself a few extra inches, place your hands and go up. I seem to remember you having shoulder flexibility, right? If not, some extra gomukasana arms will make a huge difference. The flailing arms makes me think shoulder flexibility. You could use a…
  • As far as mats go - what are you practicing on? If it's carpet, just use carpet - the mat will make it squishier. If it's a wood floor or similar, use a thin sticky mat 1/4 inch. There are only a few reasons to get a thicker mat than that: your boney and you need extra padding (most people don't), your floors are stained…
  • You can turn your toes under and grab your heels that way. Without knowing your body, I can't tell you what you need to work on. Chances are it's either the hip flexors, the shoulders, or the back - which is quite a lot. You could do danurasana http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/875 it's basically the same pose, using…
  • Here's another video for you, it shows the continuum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZyj5nZldgA&list=UUn927zms5zmsKiUdMB4olbw&index=17
  • I just joined this group - a little late for February. I need to do more meditation, but I'm really into yoga asana. I do Iyengar yoga. My teacher isn't harsh at all, but I've met some that are. I occasionally do a pranayama practice to an audio of John Schumacher, which is a lot like meditation, but I don't usually follow…
  • If you are at home, you can take your bra off. It's more complicated in a class though. You can take a strap around the top part of the breast line and strap them in. You can also adjust your set up: if you use blankets, try adding more. If you do not use blankets (be careful of your neck, most necks do not go into 90…
  • Want to work on drop backs? Here are some great video tips: see blog post 2/8/13 http://www.livethelightofyoga.com/1/archives/02-2013/1.html
  • There are a couple of other yoga sites as well: yogaglo ihanuman I do some audios from John Schumacher from ihanuman - the other sites do not have Iyengar yoga. I prefer audio since I don't need to look at a screen to see what they are doing. You pay per class on ihanuman, but you own it after that.
  • Try your local library so you can test a few. There are also free podcasts from Yoga Journal
  • Rodney Yee has both Intermediate and Advanced DVDs.
  • I would think a light landing is better, but I don't practice ashtanga. It would be something you would have to ask an Ashtanga teacher to show how.
  • I haven't personally, but I know someone that did. I'm sure you'll lose weight, but the only effect it really had on her was general grumpiness.
  • I've noticed that those that can float well, can usually press up into handstand (this is different than kicking up) - so there's a whole lot going on in the abdomen. Also hamstring flexibility has to be there (to jump forward), because if you watch someone doing it, it's a forward bend. There's also getting the hips over…
  • If she is fairly fit, any beginners DVD will work. If not look for titles like "chair yoga" or "gentle". The AM/PM yoga by Gaiam is tame. I recommend taking a few classes first, especially if she has had any structural surgies or other health issues.
  • If you google types of yoga you may find one that resonates with you. After that, check out local studios and see if they have a beginners class or series. Usually, you can take the first class free and you'll get a chance to see if the teacher is some you like and respect. As far as mediation goes, what are you looking…
  • I'm going on one next week, but mine are based on the teacher. The only one I've been on (the same one I'm going to next week). didn't have any frills, though I got a room to myself. It's in Louisiana, and you have to "qualify" - meaning you have to be able to do certain poses. Some are like that. There are a couple of…
  • Have you talked to your teacher? Are you worried about the jumpings or something else? I know people over 50 that do Ashtanga, but it is more common to see younger folks in any type of vinyasa class. I'm totally biased, but I would suggest Iyengar. It has the same lineage (from Krishnamacharya), but the style is totally…
  • The idea that hot yoga burns more calories than room temperature yoga (assuming the same routine was done) is a misconception. If you walk outside on a hot day versus on a cool day: you will be more tired and feel like you worked harder on the hot day but the calorie burn difference is minimal.
  • Not weird at all. You might even get other guys to start coming - if they noticed one guy in the class. You might become the pet of the middle aged women, depending on the class vibe - remember, you would be young enough to be their kid.
  • There's a yoga group on here, check it out: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group Someone may have already asked your question(s). I think any exercise that you enjoy will help you lose weight more than an exercise you do not enjoy.

  • Check your library for one. My favorite one for beginners is called "yoga for weight loss" with Suzanne Deason. It gives multiple options.
