The big, expensive, manduka mats will also work

I would try it out and see what you think. If it's a different teacher on Monday and Thursday, I would say try them both. I would guess you wouldn't be out much money, so what do you have to lose?

Congrats Bluetrace! I had two breakthroughs yesterday: The first was coming up into handstand with both legs - I went from using a bolster to using a rolled sticky mat against the wall. This keeps your head from banging into the wall, but eventually you have to wean yourself from the prop. I've worked with the bolster for…

Thanks for the update

Many times, I write down what I plan to do first. Other times, I'll set a timer for 1-5 minute intervals and do poses that way - for example 1 minute standing poses and do all the standing poses I can think of or all that I have energy for. Or I do 5 minute intervals: 5 minutes of abs, 5 minutes of back work, 5 minutes of…

Did Lexi just come back? If so: separate them and you'll have to reintroduce them slowly. I mean slowly. Check out this article: http://www.fourpaws.org/pages/adopting_pages/introducing_cats.html If not - If the cats were getting along for the past couple of weeks and now they are fighting, you have an entirely different…

What kind of yoga do you do at class? Do you think your teacher is the best? If so, ask him/her for a suggestion. You'll hear a lot of suggestions on these forums from kundalini to celebrity endorsed hybrids, so I think it's best to try to figure out what you like. When I did videos, I did a lot of Rodney Yee, some…

I think so, but it doesn't burn that many calories either.

Any movement will help you burn calories. That said, yoga doesn't burn that much (I will have many people disagree with me here). Yoga can help in a couple of ways though: if you take your practice seriously - a way to get connected with your body and truly get to know it, yoga can help with food intake - knowing when…

I frequently do yoga in the evening, though not that late. If I'm tired, I start by doing a supported backbend. Sometimes I'll go for a short walk to get my blood moving

Rodney Yee has many good ones. Patricia Walden's "Yoga for Beginners" is a good place to start as well.

Yoga wins hands down. Though my ideal day would be: breakfast, a walk in the woods, snack, 2-3 hour yoga class in the morning, lunch, a long walk in the woods, snack, another 2 hour class, dinner. I think the fact that the meals are included are why I'm on this site...

It's fine to do both in the same day. I believe the calorie burn in Bikram is overestimated.
-
good eye, I didn't catch that. I would agree with you - and the fact that heat increases HR. That was the livestrong article (not the huffington post, which was the first link I put up).
-
That article was from the Huffington Post. I cannot find scientific study on-line, but here's what I found: http://www.livestrong.com/article/371990-will-you-burn-more-calories-exercising-in-extreme-heat/ Oddly, there were just as many articles about exercising in the cold. Here's an article about how your body burns…

The heat increases your heart rate because it is working to cool your body down. The extra amount of energy burned to increase your heart rate burns just a few more calories. You're not working your muscles any harder. If heat burned significantly more calories we could just sit in a sauna.…

Abby is a great person and teacher. If you're going to do yoga at home, try her out.
-
Not to spoil the fun here, but HRM do not give an accurate calorie burn reading in hot yoga. The closest you will get will be to do the sequence in a non-heated room and see what the calorie burn is.

Have you asked your teacher? There could be something going on with your form. Most people roll out (little finger side) on their hands in weight baring poses. The best prop would be a slant board. You can get them at a hardware store for cheap, though they're not called that. It's the piece of wood that goes under a door…

Great job! I think bird of paradise is way harder than crane. You'll be there in no time.

Here's the link to the yoga group: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group I do Iyengar, almost daily. I aim for 10+ hours a week of practice.

There's a trick with a yoga belt where you make a harness that doesn't allow your shoulders to slump over. If you have a smart phone, you can set a timer to go off every hour that reminds you to stand up straight. Or you could do it any time you hear "mom".

On cardio: Walking: free - but Amazon prime membership to watch videos while walking is about $8 a month, also have a Netflix 2 dvds at a time membership which is $12 - do not have cable though Cycling: free, unless you count the cost of the bike - I do about 5 sponsored rides a year, they are about $30-40 a ride. I teach…

There's a Yoga group that's open to all, join us: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group

I'm over 40 and can do one for a minute (against a wall). Why do you think you'll never be able to do one?
-
Most studios offer your first class for free. Go try it, you have nothing to lose. In fact, try a couple of different styles of yoga and see what resonates with you. You'll see some studios with 40 people in the class, some with 5 people. You'll see a teacher that "leads" the class (meaning he/she stands in front and does…

Can you make yourself like broccoli (or insert vegetable here that you dislike)? If you ate it everyday, would you still dislike it - maybe, but not as much - and eventually it would become a habit. Yoga can be like that. I love yoga. I practice nearly everyday. There are days I don't want to practice though. I'm sure…

That is a wonderful accomplishment. Do you do any of the organized rides? I do the Outlaw and the Rosedale almost every year - just wondering if I would see you passing me some time.

Rodney Yee also has an Intermediate and an Advanced DVD. They are truly intermediate and advanced.
