I would ask a doctor or physical therapist about the S1 problem - and ask what you should/not do. If you don't like crowds, I would find something you like to do outside - walking, running, hiking, biking, etc. Or buy a good piece of equipment for your house. We have a treadmill that is about 5 years old and still as good…

my original post was meant to be a joke, it was something I read on the internets and thought was funny - I added the Anusara and the Jivamukti
-
I would guess it's about the same. As you said, you are adding some resistance, but there is less impact.

I should have said "I could NOT get back up" - wishful thinking Freudian slip? Tree pose extended positions? Hand to big toe pose standing?
-
So I just tried the pistol from the squat and was able to do it. I could also go down, but I held my big toe. I could go up again though. There's a physical as well as mental block to getting back up. Need more flexibility in my ankles as well.
-
Absolutely. You did the right thing.

He mentioned Marichyasana - so it's the balancing version without a bind or twist. It's also similar, in my brain, to eka hasta bhujangasana

I watched some of the videos too. Reminded me of the foot stuff we do in yoga sometimes. I will have to disagree with the following statement, "A primary cause of limited hip mobility is excessive fat storage in region of your gut." While I think of people who are very thin that have very open hips, I can think of those…

In class this morning, one of my students said she went to an Ashtanga class and worked on the primary series. Thanks for bringing it up, so I could take another look at it and be ready to answer questions.

I'm pretty impressed that it's just your shoulders. There's some serious hip poses in that.

Here's a yoga group, for all those that love yoga  http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group I've practiced for 12 years. There's some yoga that is easy, some that is hard. A good student can make an easy class harder; a good teacher can make a hard class easier.

Yoga Journal has free podcasts.

Never tried it, but I thought you would be interested in joining the yoga group on mfp. It's open to all: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group You might want to try posting again on Monday as more people are active during the workweek.

Truth be told, I don't like hot yoga. I live in a hot climate, and I don't mind doing yoga outside when it's over 90 - but I don't get heating up a room to such a temp. I've never done the 105 degree yoga. The hottest I've ever gone was a 90 degree Ashtanga class with David Swenson (he's yoga famous, you can google him). I…

H1 balance is harder - easier on the neck and you can stay longer though. You do H1 at the wall, yes? You'll have no problem with practice. You can do the following to learn balance - it progresses like this: 1. take the legs off the wall one at a time - probably you already do this 2. take the legs off the wall together…

The article people are talking about is actually from a book called "The Science of Yoga" by William Broad. http://www.npr.org/2012/02/10/146697650/the-science-of-yoga-the-risks-and-the-rewards even he says the science is sketchy. He's a writer for the NY Times. He caused a big uproar in the yoga community early this year…

Eat if you're hungry, don't eat if you're not. There will come a time when you no longer wish to count calories, and you will have to have another guide (hunger) to decide how much to eat. Usually when I have a large burn, I'm hungrier that day so I eat more, but I'm also hungrier the next day. So one day I'm under, the…

What?!?!? They kicked you out of class? Have you tried Anusara, they love to laugh in those classes.

You could try to look for videos or books at your library

Just as an aside, I held the following poses today for a minute or longer: Triangle, revolved triangle, side angle, revolved side angle, warriors 1, 2, & 3, half moon, some standing forward bends, headstand, shoulderstand, handstand, locust, bow, camel.

I'm no expert, but I know where the experts are. I know you don't have scoliosis, but the symptoms sound similar, so here is where I would go for poses: book: http://www.amazon.com/Yoga-Scoliosis-Journey-Health-Healing/dp/1936303027/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1354889360&sr=8-2&keywords=yoga+for+scoliosis dvd:…

I don't like music at all, but I know I'm in the minority here. I ask my students to tell me what they want to work on when class is over. I can then develop a plan. Not too many people take me up on this though. In Iyengar yoga, we are encouraged to come with a plan, but modify it for the class. We are also asked to do…

Yes, but not in beginner's classes

Why is that?

ooh, they have anatomy videos. Sadly, no Iyengar classes.
