  • I'm baffled as well zenmummy.
  • Full article for those that like statistics: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3425136/ It also goes into why class attendance did not correlate to improved health, but basically boils down to: "Intense practitioners attended class at the same rate as less intense practitioners. This possibly explains why class…
  • That's funny you mention those things, TGKvr, there are things on your list I dislike: playing music and touch during savasana. It's good to know what everyone likes though.
  • Everyone has a limitation of some sort. The super flexible usually aren't that strong. The strong usually aren't flexible. The athletic can't sit still; those that like to sit still, don't like to move, etc. Everyone has an obstacle. Yoga is for overcoming obstacles, most of them mental. But that's more philosophical, and…
  • Not cardio. Not a significant burn of calories (unless you are prepared to do 3 hours). If those are the focus for you, I would suggest running. If you are interested in building strength (those some contest this) and flexibility, and having a greater sense balance for your body; relieving stress, being more calm and…
  • Absolutely. That's actually how I got started. The most important thing is to find a teacher that is willing and able to work with you. Find the most experienced teacher around - look for at least a 500 hour trained teacher. If you can find what is called a 500 E-YRT ("E" meaning experienced, over 1,500 hours of teaching)…
  • There's an entire yoga group: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group There should be a topic in there about dvds, but I think you didn't get a response because of time of day of post. During the workweek, many more people are posting  I would start at your library and see if there is anything…
  • I've never done yogaglo (any prerecorded class I prefer on audio, also they don't have any Iyengar teachers on there), but I didn't see any 108 SS. I go to Christina Sell's classes occasionally (might go to one this weekend in fact), and I really like her. The 108 is something special a studio does. Usually listed under…
  • Yes, as long as it is challenging for you.

  • That was a bit of a cop out (but does extend one side of the feet/ankle). Do you remember which poses hurt? I would find another class and tell the instructor prior to the class about your ankles.
  • Could always try your library and see what videos they have. Also, look at podcasts. Yoga Journal has some, but I don't know if they are for beginners or not.
  • good for you!
  • I have to disagree here. I believe the people who brought asana (the postures, what you do in class) to the west are BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Nidra Devi.
  • Some studios have straps from the ceiling, but most have what is called a "yoga wall" - which is basically a wall with straps attached to it. BKS Iyengar pioneered the use of props to help students in poses. He also pioneered medicinal yoga - almost all scientific studies done on yoga are in the Iyengar form - he had TB as…
  • Style of yoga matters. Vinyasa or Flow, as the name suggests, moves fairly quickly from one pose to another. I prefer, and do, Iyengar yoga where the poses are held for usually long periods of time.
  • That's the work of the pose. Where do your arms hurt?
  • There's an open group of people that love yoga, please join: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group My favorite pose always changes. I like balance poses and most of the standing poses, backbends, arm balances, and wide-legged forward bends. I tend to not like twists and abs.
  • Bikram is a trademarked form of yoga - yep, you read that right, Bikram himself royally ticked off almost the entire yoga community when he sued studios for not paying him to use his name - mostly because he tried to trademark his sequence. It's done in a hot room (usually 105 these days) with 26 postures that are repeated…
  • Yoga is not going to help you recover. Have you tried taking an entire week off? Or only doing easy stuff for a week? However, I would check with your doctor.
  • There's an entire group of us, open to all: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/1484-generic-yoga-group

  • Yoga instructors are not supposed to date their students. It happens all the time though. Some famous yoga instructors became infamous for such behavior -- usually the genders are the other way around. It is very easy to confuse the good feeling from yoga, the gratitude you feel for an instructor, with something deeper.
  • You will read a lot about "yoga helped me lose ___ lbs" to "yoga isn't aerobic enough to help you lose weight". If it's something you'll stick to and enjoy, go with it - see what it does for you.
  • The forums on here go back and forth with this issue. The hot yoga and bikram people insist that they burn more calories. Detractors say that you will not burn more calories when it is "hot" than when it is "cool" - otherwise to lose weight we would just have to turn off the air conditioning. I looked at your profile. Why…
  •
  • For my 500 hour yoga teacher training, I have to do an assigned daily practice - I have a sequence to do 6 days a week. My goal is to get though it without too much complaining.
  • Good for you!
  • Could be anything, really. Could be, as yogichic said, you're holding your breath. Could be a bad sequence (which would explain why some days you do not feel tired), could be too short of a savasana, could be you're not getting enough sleep at night, could be you're turning your neck too far, could be diet related, get the…
  • Do you know the IT Band stretch? I'm sure someone you know has a smart phone or video camera. Have them video your run, with you trying not to correct.
  • How is your internal rotation, especially on your right side? If you are doing Virabhadrasana 1, left leg in front, what does your right leg feel like? Can you keep your hips facing somewhat forward, your back leg straight, and your heal down? I would guess that you are overly flexible and need to tighten your adductor…
  • I would try going to your library and trying a few out. There are also free podcasts, yoga journal has one. You should also try going to a few different classes. The first class is usually free.
