  • Me. 5'3 and currently 165. I want to see 142.
  • I have not been able to successfully lose weight while half marathon training. My longest long runs have been 12 miles during training. I do lift weights as well as run. I have found that it has been easier to maintain. Now, it MAY be easier for someone training for a marathon to lose weight IF that person has a greater…
  • This. When I lunch with work out I find most places will grill me a piece of chicken and steam some veggies.. I always ask for no oil and no butter. If you are a dipper like me, ask for bbq sauce and call it a day. Also, call ahead of time and ask if they make special accomodations.. if they do, great. If not, eat a…
  • Braids or a bun are the only thing I can do to keep my long hair from being such a mess when I run.
  • Yes, for anything over 6 I carry a Nathan handheld with Nuun.
  • I take BodyPump (group fitness class) 2-3 times a week. Sometimes I take Spinning class (at least once a week). I run (outside or TM) 4 days a week. I also do a kettlebell and weight/strength training workout 2 times a week.
  • You could still do Crossfit at home... just do the online WOD... of course you would need a few items in your home gym to do that but you've got money to spend, spend it there instead of a treadmill. Then learn to love running outside!
  • I'm a wuss... I would do the treadmill. I don't mind the rain but it usually means I can't run with my music (which I love) and I hate soggy shoes if I can avoid having them.
  • SLB - you are going to do great!!! My race is now just a few short days away too. I skipped yesterday but am going to the gym tonight. I am debating spin class, BodyPump or run. IF I run it'll be short -- 2-3 miles. I could do that AND BodyPump. OR I can go to spinning and abs class. Hmm.
  • Spinning/Group Cycling is my favorite! I take it and BodyPump at my gym. Both are great classes. The first time taking spinning will leave your butt sore but you get to use to it really fast.
  • Kat - the yak trax do feel weird at first! But if there is a good bit of snow the traction feels better. Not sure that makes much sense though. lol Ran my last long run before my half marathon next weekend. We decided since we got such a late start yesterday morning we would do 6. It was pretty speedy the first 3 miles…
  • When I ran my first half I only used about 6 Sports Beans at mile 7 (3 beans) and mile 10 (3 beans). I had too much energy and adrenaline I guess stored up. For my long runs (10+ miles) I typically take a few beans or a Honey Stinger chew around mile 7,9, 11. I stay hydrated with Nuun. I think it just depends on the…
  • Good luck! My favorite running partner is my hubby...even when he is wayy faster than me. I can't think of a better support system for each other!
  • I'd rather run and have face wrinkles than not run and have dimples on my a**! Seriously though I have not noticed more wrinkles since I started losing weight and running. I run 4 days a week and average 25 miles per week during training. I try hard to take care of my skin and always use sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Weight is not listed on mine however people do a double take when I have to show them my i.d. I have lost 70 + lbs since the license pic was taken. I don't look the same at all.
  • I have big calves. Huge. Mine were 17 inches when I started 2 years ago at 230 lbs. I have not been able to spot reduce one single part of my body. Pretty sure it is not possible. However, through diet/exercise I have lost a ton of fat and turned some into nice muscle! Score! My calves now measure around 14 in. Just keep…
  • I lift at the gym(usually kettlebells) and also take BodyPump at least 2 times a week.
  • So sorry! I hope it heals soon for you! As far as winter running, I know winter here is nothing like winter where you are BUT I have ran in snow and freezing temps. I use yaktrax on my shoes and just bundle up. I keep my snowy runs to 2-3 miles and am definitely slower.
  • My husband is asthmatic and has been his whole life. He and I both ran a half marathon this past spring and are currently training for our 2nd half marathon. He does some very intense kettlebell workouts. His mantra "Asthmatic...no excuses!" So, start slow and build up... you can totally do and learn to love it! And how…
  • I'm not sure where you got your info but walking/running at a high incline burns far more calories than running/walking on a flat surface. When you walk/run or even use the elliptical you are using the muscles in your legs/butt/thighs (which happen to be a large muscle group!) and using large muscle groups helps burn more…
  • Usually my feet/legs KNOW when my shoes need to be replaced. I've lost track of mileage I put on each pair and now just go with how they feel. If I had to guess I would say 300 miles or every 3-4 months.
  • As much as I train on hills I should not dread them, but I do. However, I love the feeling once I reach the top.
  • If I push myself really hard I can get under 10 mins... right around 9:45-9:50. However, my comfort zone is around 10-10:15 for short runs. For my long runs (anything over 6 miles) I stay around 10:45-11. I've been running for 2+ years. I started out weighing 230 lbs and barely able to run 15 seconds at a very slow pace. I…
  • Rest and get to the dr. You do NOT want to push through the pain and cause further injury. Big hugs! I know this has to be devastating so close to race day BUT maybe if you rest and get good news from the dr the race won't be out?? And perhaps if it is, you can transfer your reg fee to next year or another race?
  • Don't be discouraged by your times while training. For your first half marathon I suggest just making it to the finish line. :) Are you following a training plan now? If so, just keep on with your training plan as best you can. If it calls for speed work/interval training, do that. It doesn't hurt but with just 6 weeks…
  • I am doing the 13.1 Marathon series in Atlanta, GA. I always take Fridays as a rest day because of our schedule and I really have never ran anything the day just before a race. I think taking 2 days will leave my legs fresh...or at least that is what I am hoping for! Good luck to you. I can't wait to hear about your race!…
  • I do a LOT of my running on the treadmill but I do like being outside to run. In the winter, I will be outside as much as I can though because I will most likely be training for something (as I am now) and running solely on the treadmill won't prep me as much for whatever race I am training for. It does not make you less…
  • When I weighed 230 lb and started my weight loss journey the first week I lost 12 lbs. To me that is a lot on a 230lb woman. Is 36 lbs a lot on a 400+ lb person? Not really when you consider that most of those people lived off meals consisting of pure junk. I'm sure it was nothing for most of those 400 lb folks to eat 1200…
  • Berry - hang in there. I totally understand! Don't give up and just keep on doing what you're doing. When the time comes and you do run that distance you will be so glad you stepped up. It's always good to go based on how you "feel." Slb- You may have said, but which race are you doing? I think I have short runs next week…
