  • I am feeling pretty amazing. I started the Couch to 5K beginner running program on the 11th February. I have always wanted to be a runner for no other reason than it always seemed like the pinacle of fitness and far too hard for me. I've tried and failed at many points during my life to be a runner, generally weighing a…
  • Running burns calories, but if you look at the numbers the most important thing is to eat less :) A 30 min run burns about 300 calories. That's a couple of biscuits. So to get the extra rapid weight loss from running you are looking for you would have to be running a LOT.
  • Shooting_star, I've just re-read the OP and you are right, kaylou's heart rate is unusually high. I've just checked the your profile kaylou and you are the same age as me. This means that your max HR based on the standard formula is 220 - age (38) =182. If you are averaging 180-188, this is very high and appears to exceed…

  • You burn more calories when your heart rate is higher. Working hard is good. You may burn a higher percentage of fat at a slightly lower heart rate, however you will burn less calories in total and less fat in total.

  • I use a Polar F6 and I just compared my last run values to the values I'd get from your equation. They are different by a factor of 2! I just don't understand how they can be so different. My Polar F6 numbers - 50mins 495cals avg HR 151bpm The Equation gives me 957cals. T=50 W=90 HR=151 I am 90kg. There must be something…
  • I wear a HR monitor and here are a couple of my Wii Fit sessions 45mins 199 cals avg HR 101bpm Max HR 134. Step plus weights. 50mins 279 cals avg HR 112bpm So, it's not very energetic for me. I find it hard to raise my HR. Although the Hula and the boxing are ok. I don't generally bother with the running as I run outside.

  • You are all such a chatty bunch, it's hard to keep up! I'm down to 202 lbs :-) Edging perilously close to the sub 200's yay! Although, for me it's the 80's I'm aiming for as I'm a metric girl. I'm into week 7 of Couch 2 5k now and have not had a single run I couldn't complete. I am so motivated and have to stop myself…
  • I'm still breastfeeding my 11 month old once a day. I don't think it's a significant amount though, so I'm not adding in any extra calories any more for it. I think it would be less than 100 cals if I did though.
  • Hi all! I am a bit flat today. I finished my week 6 day 1 couch 2 5k run and it was awful. It shouldn't have been though as I have already run for longer. I just felt terrible, so I am a bit down. Plus my life is full of massive challenges at the moment and I think it's getting to me. But I am eating well and still…
  • Running definitely burns more calories than walking for me. Much quicker way to get a good calorie burn than a walk. I don't know that I can call myself a runner yet as I've just completed week 5 of the couch 2 5k program, so I am just running 20 mins non-stop. However, I feel so brilliant. It's hard for me and so it's a…
  • You can do it! Being honest with yourself about the numbers on the scale is the first step. Don't beat yourself up too much and get back on the wagon and you'll be back on track in no time
  • Mya - With the amount of exercise you do you could definitely do the jogging. I'm 206lbs and I am making my way through the Couch 2 5K at the moment. I'm up to week 5 and still managing to complete each run on schedule. It's really incredible and so motivating. Welcome all the newbies :-) I am sitting down after finishing…
  • Sorry I've been MIA but it doesn't mean I haven't been working hard! My scales aren't moving very much though and it's getting frustrating as it's been a few weeks with only a minimal downward trend. I am super good on my calories and I don't eat junk as part of it. I exercise every day so I'm not sure what is going wrong…
  • My HRM is much more likely to be accurate as it has all my details (weight, sex, height) plus it has a continuous recording of my heart rate. So the HRM knows how hard I am working throughout the entire workout. The machines are just guestimating the calories burned based on the settings you are using. Some are more…
  • No one really needs a HRM, but they are a great motivational tool and excellent fun. You can take the machine calories and the pedometer, but just be aware that they often over-estimate the calories burned. I did a check between my pedometer and my HRM the other day and there was a 50 Calorie difference! My HRM was lower.
  • This challenge really indicates how much more specific strength training I need to do! This week I have hardly done any. Sun - 15 mins Tues - 15 min Thurs - 45 mins Check in weight for today - 93.2kg (205.5lbs) I didn't set up more goals, but my goal is to lose 1kg/week so that is what I am sticking with. I had a…
  • M - I think you need to listen to your body, and your body was asking for a wee break to rebuild. You'll be back stronger than ever! Myastyme - Woo 50lbs! Impressive. Can't say I will ever be exercising in the middle of the night though - that's dedication I just don't have! My scales are finally trending down again after…
  • Wow! We're a chatty bunch. A new thread is a great idea. I hit a little low patch yesterday and this morning as my weight is just hovering and it's frustrating me. I am still eating within my calorie limits and exercising well so it's not much fun to see no results. I am second guessing myself and so I have a question for…
  • Brilliant effort! It's great seeing those numbers dropping consistently
  • Sounds like a resounding YES vote. Thanks everyone! I need to improve my core so this sounds like an excellent idea  I've seen those Bosu balls, I wish my gym had one so I could try it out.
  • My birthday is coming up and I have been asked for present ideas. I have been thinking of adding to my fitness gear and was wondering if a swiss ball is a good thing to own? It's just quite bulky so I don't want to own one if it's just going to get in the way. Or is there something else I should get first? I have some…
  • I think sometimes when you first start your workout and the sensors aren't moist enough, the Polars can give occasional bad readings. So I wouldn't panic that your heart was actually getting that high a heart rate. This week when I just started my workout I had my HRM on %HR and I was running on the Treadmill so it was…
  • I don't even notice the strap, it's very comfy and sits right on the bra line for me. I'm still wearing mine from this morning's workout. The HRM with the straps are more accurate. Don't forget to take your resting calories off your HRM number before you log your exercise! Mine is about 70cal / hour

  • Well I certainly feel like a Brought it this morning. I am feeling very tired and slightly discouraged. I completed my first day of week 4 of Couch to 5K this morning then did another 25min cardio. But I found the Couch 2 5K run very hard. I was on the Treadmill for a change today, but only running at 7km/h which is very…
  • Oh, and I've found mine to be variable compared to the machine. On some the HRM is higher and on others much much lower. I compared it to my pedometer today. Pedometer 314 cal and HRM 253 - big difference :-)

  • I agree. I find mine so incredibly motivating. I want to log more numbers, so it keeps me moving. It also lets me see when I've recovered enough to hit myself hard again if I'm doing some interval training. Love it!

  • Some great losses! Woo hoo! Going down, down, down....
  • M - I have had a quick look at the P90x site and it does look great. It's going to be a bit too expensive at the moment though as the NZ $ is really low at the moment. Basically it's 50c US, which means anything in the US I have to double and then add postage. Perhaps once I get a bit fitter the dollar will rise too and…
  • I eat 1200 plus a portion of my exercise calories. If I'm seriously hungry I'll eat most of them, but mostly I like to leave a good amount behind. I'm in the obese category, so I can afford to be a little more aggressive at this stage. I also calculated that I need to have an additional 280 calorie deficit per day to…
