Well, I'm already your friend, but when I started out I had 89 pounds to go. Now that I'm down 25, it's that much less!

LOL I've used this exact analogy before! :)

I think this is a great synopsis, but question: How is MFP dishing out 1200 calorie targets? It's got me at 1640 and I weigh 264 and have it set at sedentary male age 43.

I log every day I have access to a computer. Steve

I wonder if that is part of it - you never had as many fat cells to shrink. At my heaviest I was 289, and I have not weight 217 since high school except for a brief period in 1995 or so when I got down to 202 on Redux. Well, you can see my dairy. I am down 28 pounds over 23 weeks, which is 1.2 pounds per week on average. I…

Out of curiosity, have you ever been fat? From your pictures it does not appear so. Steve
-
Have you ever been fat? I remember reading an article once about fat people on diets and they looked metabolically like they were starving. I wonder if it's all the fat cells screaming out in terror? :) Steve

I assume a 1000-calorie-a-day deficit. I have set up MFP for a 2-pound-per-week loss. I weigh 264 pounds and MFP has my daily goal at 1,640 calories. I go to the gym 3 times a week and lift for 30 minutes and ride the exercise bike for 30 minutes burning about 120 calories on the bike, according to the machine itself. My…

What is IF? Anyway, every time I'm on a calorie deficit, I'm hungry. I figure if you're losing weight, you must be hungry. It's always been that way for me. Steve
-
It's the way it is, for me. It gets better after the first 4-6 weeks, but basically, I'm hungry all the time. I mean, if you weren't hungry, dieting wouldn't require any willpower at all! Steve

Yup, some people claim this to be true. It's never been true for me. I've been fat my entire adult life, some 30 years. I've "dieted" countless times. Without exception, if I'm losing weight, I'm hungry. And conversely, if I'm not hungry, I'm not losing weight. The only exception to this was when I was on the diet drug…

I have not read the book, but I'll address the book's rules listed in the "debunking" article: 1. Drink a large glass of water before every meal. No excuses. Unlike the debunking article, I don't see any harm in this. I don't think most feelings of hunger come from the actual volume of your stomach, they are probably the…

I think you're being too hard on yourself. You are still in very good shape. Exercise and diet.

Nope. You can't out-train a bad diet. Or, as the phrase I have adopted says, "You can't outrun a fork!" The primary reason why most Americans are overweight is because if you just eat without thinking about what you are eating it is trivially easy to overeat. Many of the foods Americans eat are cheap, convenient, tasty,…

Much of physical endeavor is mental. If it's what they need to psyche themselves up to it, it's cool. In martial arts, it's called "Kiai". It is, simply, a battle cry. Sometimes it's bravado.

Here's my advice as someone who also had 100 pounds to lose: Concentrate on your diet first. Once you have your diet under control and you can maintain a calorie deficit for 3 months, then you can start thinking about adding in a fitness routine. I personally found it staggering to summon the willpower to just change my…

1) Find MFP friends that inspire you and are active. For me a big part of staying focused is knowing that people are watching you. If you are on facebook, link your MFP account with it so it will post updates there for the same reason. 2) Log your food religiously. 3) The first 6-8 weeks are the hardest. If you can get…

When I used to make armor my right arm was bigger than my left from swinging a hammer. :)

i suspect this is a result of where your pants ride. Your fat has been able to deposit above and below your belt line. Anyway the only thing for it is to lose the fat. That means maintaining a calorie deficit.

This. Gotta open that diary if you want honest advice. I've been dieting for 23 weeks and have lost 28 pounds for an average of 1.2 pounds per week. If you have been truly eating a calorie deficit for 9 months you should be losing weight.

I guess I'm different. I never really had a "negative" straw to change my behavior. I have been fat since puberty and while I knew it I just lived with it. My change came when I was at a party with a bunch of fitness friends who had enjoyed a lot of success on their Paleo diets and doing Crossfit. I wanted to be like them…

Every time I start a diet, I feel cold and tired. I mostly notice it in my mouse hand! :) It gets cold sitting there by itself. Goes away in a few weeks though. Steve

I stole it from someone on here. :) Steve

I use a teaspoon to eat it! :) Steve

Unless you are down into single-digit body fat percentages, if you eat a calorie deficit you will, and must, lose weight. This is not to say that you can't eat to little, you certainly can and it can harm you. It is simply to say that for most people trying to lose weight, eating more food is never the answer.

This. I totally get needing external recognition for motivation. People always behave best when they know they are being watched. Get active MFP friends.

My weight varies by as much as 3 pounds a day. It's either due to water or imprecision of my scale, though I try and get on the scale at least 2 times to verify the reading. I've lost 28 pounds over 5 months, or 23 weeks. That is nearly 6 pounds a month, or 1.2 pounds per week, on average. I've got MFP set up for a…

I would think once you are pretty enough to worry about waxing you wouldn't have to worry about being naked.

As long as you are honest about having an opinion on something you haven't personally experienced, it's all good. Like I said in the last go-around on this topic, there are of course obvious differences between physiological addictions and behavioral addictions. This does not change the fact that they are both addictions,…

I would suggest that all of you who have never experienced the uncontrollable urge to eat to kindly stay out of these kinds of threads. Clearly you have never experienced a behavioral addiction and so you have no ability to relate to what the people here are talking about. Just because breaking a behavioral addiction like…
