It depends. What is the diet like? What is his water intake? If those 2 things are not in place, then it could explain the weight gain, not loss.

You have to discover what is best for you. If you are not using the gym as much then you can cancel it since you have an elliptical machine at home. There are other alternatives for weight training like resistance bands & other at-home strength training routines. It depends on what works best for you.

Don't give up!!! Watch the sodium intake...it may be contributing to water retention....I have this issue so I really watch this myself.
