Hello Angel, My name is Diane & I am a type 1 for 39yrs. I want to first say congrats on being so young & taking care of yourself by joining this site to track your food & exercise. You are being very wise & responsible. I wasnt when I was diagnosed (at least not for the earlier years) I had 3 young children & didnt worry…

Hi Tim, My name is Diane & I was diagnosed just diabetic 39yrs ago. I was started on pills & back then my blood was checked at a lab 1x/month--there were no home testing machines. The pills stopped working, I got very sick, developed ketoacidosis & was hospitalized 9 days & started on insulin. I still had blood drawn in lab…

Hi KLK, Welcome to MFP!! My name is Diane, I've been type 1 for 39yrs. I take injections 4 times/day. I have had several Endos over the years & not one of them has ever recommended a pump~~don't know why! Im glad you are trying to keep your weight down & lead a healthy lifestyle while you are young. I think I lived in…

Hi Martin, Im a type 1 but don't use a pump. I was diagnosed in 1973, have had several different endos, many problems ie ketoacidosis too many times to remember & then many years of lows (having to call 911 when nothing brought me around) & not once has a pump ever been suggested. I have been wondering if there are some…

I always ate oatmeal as a kid (lots of sugar & cream) until I found out I was diabetic. I hated it without sugar & stopped eating it until recently. My son told me to try Mrs Butterworths Sugar Free Syrup - I did & I love it again! I use Quaker Old Fashioned Oats (they take about 5 min to cook) I eat 1/2 cup w/1 tbsp…

I just finished a bag of the apple cinnamon straws & they are really good, especially if you are trying to satisfy a craving for something sweet. I plan to try the veggie straws next. I don't know if they would count as a veggie but I would think if they did there would be a claim of that on the package. I assume they are…

I have never subtracted fiber. I wonder if I am overdosing my insulin although I rarely ever eat enough fiber to reach the amount MFP allows me.
-
Hi Erin Thanks for the response. The book I have is "Glycemic Index Cooking made Easy" by Brand-Miller. It only has Carbs, cals. fat & fiber for each total recipe not the individual foods that make up the recipe. It would be great if there was a formula we could use to figure out the GI of everything we eat ourselces. What…

Is there a book that lists the GI in all the foods & gives a carb count too? My insulin dose is based on carb total at each meal. Thanks, Diane

I try not to use it as an excuse. Different doctors have told me I most likely wouldn't lose weight because insulin makes it much harder...Well I am determined to prove them wrong! I have lost a total of 19lbs so far.(granted its been since March 2011 BUT its lbs lost!! I used to worry about lows from doing exercise BUT…

Tks Pandorian..I'll give it a try!

I recently started using it every day to record my blood sugar levels and blood pressure for my doc visits. Since its 2 different docs needing the info it would be great to have a separate place for each thing and a way to track it all on one page instead of on each day. thats alot of pages.

What in the world is Fitbit??

I don't think natural sugars are bad at all. Fruits and dairy are too important to give up the vitamins and nutrients they supply for the sake of the sugar content.. It's the processed sugars found in cake, cookies, candies and other junk foods that are unhealthy, empty calories. I have been a type 1 diabetic for 38yrs and…

hi! my name is Diane and i am a T1 diabetic for 38 years now. All of the docs that have treated me just call me brittle. i started really watching what i eat on 5/23 & going to weight watchers. then i started mfp 7/28. since then my insulin has been decreased 2 or 3 times. i have been dropping pretty frequently lately and…

i always heard protein breaks down fat. i don't think going over a little will hurt unless you have kidney problems. salt can elevate blood pressure and cause water retention. i was amazed at the things that contain sodium. even fresh raw vegetables. but it's best to eat fresh fruits and veggies, nothing canned (unless…
