  • We'll have to agree to disagree, as I've done various forms of various diets throughout my entire life, and believe me, my calorie intake while LOSING on low-carb is considerably in excess of my MFP goal calories. Now, if I went overboard, obviously I wouldn't lose weight, but not all calories are equal and your body needs…
  • That's not the theory behind low-carb eating.... In extremely low-carb dieting, the basic theory is: your body burns fat to replace the carbohydrates you're not eating, to include good-for-you fats. Simplified version: not all calories are equal. Not interested in starting a religious war about low-carb dieting, though.…
  • 3 weeks. Doing low carb without counting, just eating lots of meat, veggies, and some fruit.
  • Turned 40 this year... Feel old now. Losing weight in hopes of another 40 years.
  • Without a doubt.... I'm bridging the gap of sweets with Atkins and Quest protein bars (lots of delicious ones available). As for bread, I've been doing okay without it. I think it helps that we're not doing strict Atkins and that we're eating fruits, ALL vegetables, including carrots, and we're using the sweet (artificial)…
  • Not there yet, but any tips on getting this insurance paid? If paying cash/out of pocket, what is an expected cost? I think if I hit goal at around 190 that I'll have a massive amount of excess skin rolls. I was over 300lbs for the better part of 25 years. The skin isn't that resilient...
  • What part of my original post was "holier-than-thou?" Please quote specific text, as I just re-read my post and I don't see it.... It was a positive post about a great success story so far and this is the 'Success Stories' forum... Where did I say anything that disparaged other methods of losing? Thanks for all the kind…
  • I'm not diabetic, but doing low-carb diet has me losing 1-3lbs a week without fail. I will keep doing this until I reach goal.
  • I like Sweet N Low in iced tea. The other sweeteners don't taste good in it to me. In coffee, I prefer Equal or Splenda or some natural sugar, but that's calories... so....

  • Thanks! I am pretty stoked. I need to get past a particular threshold of about 279 or so, when I will be at my lowest adult weight, and after which every weight drop will be my lowest ever :)
  • It's been about two years since I wrote this, and my struggle continues. I've gained back some weight and lost it back now (thank goodness). My journey continues.... still open to any comments, words of encouragement, and any new members who might be interested in reading my blog post about my life-long struggle. I still…
  • For breakfast today I had 4.5 slices of applewood bacon and 3 fried eggs cooked in bacon grease. What's the calorie count on that for a breakfast meal? I totally get the calories in/calories out thing, because it definitely works. I've lost a lot of weight doing it. But, low-carb, high-protein doesn't work that way. The…
  • Sorry I forgot about this thread. I'm not doing any extra exercise beyond normal daily activity. I'm a school teacher and I work on the second floor, so I have a decent amount of walking, standing, and stair-climbing that I do on a daily basis. Nothing that breaks a sweat, though. I've found (and read in various articles)…
  • From what to what on pants? I'm in a 46 right now for slacks and 44 for jeans. I was at a 54-56 at one point. I can't wait to be able to buy jeans anywhere and wear an XL shirt. Constantly needing a 3x means I can never buy concert T's or other more common shirts. I pay double the regular prices by having to go to the Big…
  • It's slightly unfair to characterize all genetic predisposition as a lie. My dad was 6'3" and over 400lbs while coaching sports, playing tennis regularly and working out. Others do no exercise, eat whatever they want, and never get fat. It's not an excuse but it's also not fair to discount genetics.
  • Dropping slowly but steadily. Trying to figure out how to keep it up over the holidays.
  • I wouldn't worry about high fat. The low fat concept is a myth. Your body needs fat. In the absence of carbs, it uses the fat for energy. You especially want healthy fats, like avocado, olive oil, etc. My goal of 278 by this month may be a little ambitious... The first week of a diet is always the best. It has slowed down,…
  • Bingo!! I'm fat, because I have eaten badly most of my life and lived a mostly sedentary lifestyle. Are or were there previously things beyond my control (childhood diet, lower than average metabolism, long work hours in a desk job)? Sure there are, but that's not going to get me to my goal and just like you, I have to…
  • Yeah, I have some advice: Eat what you need and/or should and stop being a whiny little complainer. I'm sorry if that's "intimidating." Maybe a little directness is what some people need. These are the same people who won't take medicine they need, because they "don't like how it tastes," or sit at a table rudely not…
  • I don't understand people who allegedly want to lose weight or eat healthy, but insist they must be able to do that on a diet of brownies, pasta, white rice, and milkshakes. Come on. Vegetables are amazing, and how can you dislike every fruit? Seriously, as someone stated, there are many delicious fruits.
  • Grow up. Food is fuel. Eat what your body needs. Picky eaters annoy me.
  • The pills don't work without desire and seriousness. Then again, to be honest, they do. I tried phentermine last year (prescription), and I would literally forget to eat. That's insane. I felt like for the first time in my life I was thinking like a skinny person. I had to remind myself to eat for sustenance. I had to…
  • ...says someone who has never worked in a school environment. Haha. There will be at least 3 or 4 "Thanksgiving" meals for me this month (work, friends, family, parties), plus a plethora of cakes, cookies, pies, etc, dropped off in the break room for all faculty to eat. Christmas is even worse... it'll start the first week…
  • I dunno, I've had overeating days where I didn't gain as long as I got back on track the next day. Your body is NOT 100% efficient with the food you give it. Valuable stuff goes out the back end on a pretty regular basis, so I imagine some of that is excreted, yes.
  • Carb binging takes your body out of "ketosis," which is the process of burning stored fat in place of consumed carbohydrates. My personal experience indicates this is true. Even eating a big piece of bread will stop weightloss for at least 2 days.
  • Low carb works (if you can stand it and if you can avoid going carb nuts after reaching goal), but the binge thing actually ruins it. It takes the body 2-3 days to get into burn mode when going low carb, so you're really killing it with binge day. I, frankly, don't believe in "cheat days" at all. Sometimes you slip up, but…
  • I'm 38 this week, but I didn't get married until age 31 and we still don't have kids and may not. That's kind-of up to God at this point, not us (we aren't doing anything to prevent pregnancy, it's just not in the cards for us so far). Everything in time. I think marriage should be limited to people age 25+, honestly. You…
  • Thanks everybody! Great encouraging words!
  • Breakfast should be at least 50% protein every day to get the body/metabolism on the right track. After that, you should have a strong protein component to EVERY meal and snack. Lower the carbs, increase the protein, weightloss will happen, as the body needs to feed off fat stores to replace the lacking carbs.
  • I've lost about 12lbs in 3 weeks using it as a helper to stay under my calorie limit. I'm seeing the doc every 30 days, and I doubt I'll be permitted to use it beyond 90. For many, the risks of taking it in exchange for the weightloss are worth it. It's not for people who need to lose 30lbs, it's for obese people.
