  • Completely agree with ninerbuff. Sometimes in my gym we do what they call “a hard one.” This means you can do the rep with good form but honestly feel like you could do a second rep. If you need to know a percentage, just add a small amount to your “hard one” and calculate, or just use a slightly higher percentage eg…
  • Thanks all. Maybe I should have given more info but the question was getting long! I do workout approx 5 hours per week doing CrossFit, walk average of about 8000 steps per day and ride my road bike (1900 miles thus far in 2023). I was a smoker for many years and obese as well but changed lifestyle and lost my weight 5…
  • Sorry. Total cholesterol is 177 not 117. Couldn’t figure out how to edit
  • I’m thinking you can become more “green.” So you start walking to places or riding a bike to places you might have previously driven or taken mass transit to- not because it’s extra exercise but because you have become very environmentally conscious! Probably something we should all do anyway!
  • Lots of good stuff here about preworkout nutrition and hydration! It sounds like you’re new to rowing. It might just be neurological adaptation and as you do this motion more regularly it likely will subside. But after an especially hard session you might feel it again. When I started lifting weights it would happen fairly…
  • I get why older folks skip the deadlift to avoid injury. That said, I find it very valuable at 61. I deadlift about 3 times a month. Not heavy because I don’t have the strength- 1 rm is probably around 300 (estimated because I don’t really test 1rm). Nothing has made me more aware of my body when doing everyday movements.…
  • The medical definition is that not only are the symptoms gone, but the damage the disease does to the body is also cured. For a person who has T2 for a long time and develops other issues from it eg retinopathy or neuropathy- it cannot be reversed. But for someone who modifies their lifestyle quickly after developing T2 it…
  • I hate back rack lunges. Not that they are terribly hard to do but they make my butt sore for days afterwards!!
  • Hard to find because there are too many ways to define “fitness.” Who’s more fit a Major League Baseball pitcher or a fast marathon runner? Maybe try a body fat measurement and assume that a good body fat percentage reflects good general fitness.
  • In addition to some of the other great suggestions here, I’d recommend finding a gym that offers real coaching. Many CrossFit, NCFit, Comptrain, Lifetime fitness etc offer this. A good coach would be able to build a program around you, or customize a daily “group” program to fit your needs. I know if two diabetics in my…
  • Yes! MFP helped me. I needed to loose over 110lbs. lost weight fast at first (down about 80 lbs first 8 months) without MFP. In retrospect this was too fast and I was weak and cold all the time. But then I was stuck!!””- couldn’t shake the last 30. MFP logging helped me realize that I was actually eating more than I…
  • I’ve been one of those people who lost quickly but then gained it back quickly. It is NOT what you want to do! The way you’re doing it is the best. Yeah- it will take a year to lose 40 lbs. But if you think of this as a lifestyle change rather than a get leaner-faster routine, it will serve you much better. I’ve read like…
  • When I started (sedentary 57 years old) I shot for 2 lbs per week and actually lost faster- 80 lbs in like 35 weeks. Then I was stuck for a long time until I adjusted down and was more realistic. I couldn’t lose 2 lbs per week at the lower weight and would get frustrated and throw the whole thing out the window for a day…
  • I agree with the comments above (especially that exercise has its own benefits but is not necessary for weight loss) but want to just add for clarity- it seems like maybe you just don’t like your own idea of a “workout.” Try doing something you enjoy that involves moving your body. Could be dancing, walking while listening…
  • Not a doctor but it sounds like you have “dry eyes.” I have this - doctor diagnosed. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dry-eyes/symptoms-causes/syc-20371863 Some things that help: - Wear glasses of some sort- sunglasses when it’s bright out. Polarized better than regular. I need a prescription so I wear…
  • Best mat for me is a “horse stall mat” that I got at a store called Tractor Supply. This thing is awesome- but it weighs like 80 lbs. kind of thin you put in place and leave there. https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/4-ft-x-6-ft-x-3-4-in-thick-rubber-stall-mat
  • Wow. It surprises me. Basically sugar, fat and white flour in different forms. Where is the “real” food? There is none. Not one item providing decent protein (even the yogurt drink has only 5 grams), maybe 1 or 2 grams of fiber (mainly the granola bar) and the volume is crazy. The Cheetos bag is 320 calories! This is not a…
  • Recently we had an outdoor get together and I made shish kabobs - pork, chicken and vegan. I sliced three color peppers (red, yellow and green), eggplant, onions, grape tomatoes and zucchini - marinated the whole kabob in a little bit of olive oil, fresh lemon juice with oregano. I had store bought whole grain pita breads…
  • OP- I’m 60 but I only started to workout regularly 3 1/2 years ago. So it’s still kind of exciting for me. I do CrossFit-type workouts about 5 times a week and started running about 5 months ago averaging about 10-15 miles/week. Now I’m preparing for a marathon end of November so running mileage/time is ramping up. My…
  • Congrats! You’re doing great. My thought for what it’s worth- you lost quickly when you needed to - down 80 lbs in 8 months. That is great for your health. I did the same when I started 80 lbs in 8 months. I’m a little less tall 6’2” and went from 308 to about 230. In retrospect, I might have been better off losing a…
  • Low heart rate is called Bradycardia. It can be caused by a lot of things. Best to have a doc check it. But don’t worry- I’ve had it for years- even at >100 lbs overweight. Sometimes it can mean something isn’t right though so good that you’re seeing a doctor. My heart rate runs about 43-44 even as I sit here writing this.…
  • I bench about 1 time per week, and do variations another time or two (dumbell floor presses, push-ups etc). I believe benching is an important part of a well balanced approach. I was in a large chain type gym a few weeks ago getting a tour with my niece who later joined. It was my first time in quite a while in this type…
  • I’ve been doing crossfit for about 3 years. I was large with high body fat- big belly probably way too much visceral fat. I lost weight very quickly to a point. Then I really focused on cico and mainly protein macro and was actually a little thin. It seems like for me fat and carbs just fall in when protein is right (30%…
  • Hard to say exactly when it happened because it was so gradual. I started working out before I actually started watching nutrition after being a total couch potato for a long time. Of course, the first place I noticed the increase in energy was at the gym- could be from training and could be from weight loss. But I could…
  • My wife gets cramps like these. She swears by this stuff ( I have no affiliation whatsoever): Arnica Gel Pain Relief, Leg Cramp... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001VKXM8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
  • Ohhh. Great thought. On the longer runs maybe I go too far before my break for Gatorade. I usually have a bowl of oatmeal about an hour before and then a banana like 15 minutes before. Then Gatorade during the run but maybe I go too far before the Gatorade (usually about an hour in). I ordered a belt with small bottles and…
  • Thanks all. My goal is really just to finish (not walking but running) in the 7 hour limit. I guess I’m thinking about speed because one time I bicycled a century with a very slow buddy. It took over 8 1/2 hours and I felt aweful at the end of it. I did one by myself a few months before in about 6 hours and felt just so…
  • I needed to wear a suit for the first time in quite a while due to Covid. I couldn’t find my “dress” belt and accidentally grabbed an old one. It wasn’t even close to fitting! Great feeling!
  • Thanks for all the thoughtful responses! As usual, the forum has given me lots of good food for thought. My key takeaways are that I probably won’t learn as much as I expected from a certificate program, but rather by experience (like anything). But I will probably pursue a certification anyway as it is a barrier to entry.…
  • This^^^. Famous athlete and founder of NCFit, Jason Kalipa attributes his super upper body strength to the fact that he was on crutches for a long time in high school. Says it gave him a super base to build upon. I just heard it in a podcast yesterday lol! Keep walking- a lot- with the crutches!
