I still remember finishing a triathlon and listening to them announce the various age group winners and hear them say "and in the 80-85 division" and I didn't need to hear what the times were, just the FACT that there were 80 year olds doing this. The idea of someone 40 years older than me even completing one was mind…

Well, when you think about it, most of th we scales probably just take electrical impedance measurements and then compare those against a dataset of actually measured people to estimate BF. So athlete mode just uses a different dataset.

Ironically, Covid helped me get BACK on track. I'd hadn't been tracking for a long time and slowly creeping up. Being at home every day now, I decided I needed to go for a walk on a regular basis to avoid cabin fever and that little bit of exercise got my mindset slow back back into groove. For me, exercise is a big…

I would say it's reasonable to try and eat at maintenance on a vacation. The one catch is do you feel confident that you will be able to go back to deficit once you get back.

If you're doing Stronglifts, then the prior exercise before your deadlifts is going to be shoulder press. So there generally shouldn't be very many plates in the bar anyway to take off, compared to other lifts. I just lift it off from the press, set it on the safety pins, and then change the plates out for the deadlift and…

OP: I'm just curious how you know the details of how rabbits poop, and why you know? 😆😆

When it comes to the efficiency argument, I look at it this way. The power meter only measures power being applied to move th pedals. That doesn't necessarily mean there isn't energy being expended that isn't going towards the pedal rotation. For example, what about pedals with clips on them. They allow to use energy in…

I never bought weight lifting shoes and have gone barefoot (or rather with socks only). It made a big difference for me vs normal shoes (cross training) cause I felt more stable, more secure on my squats. Am I going to gain a benefit using weight lifting shoes?

What goal are you putting in to get that calorie recommendation? Maintain? Gain?
-
I've always said that the diet is more important towards the weight loss, but exercise is more important motivation wise to KEEP me on the diet.
-
I would wait, any major gain or loss always seem to overshoot and then corrects after a few days. There might be a 2 lb drop and then, say up a little for an overall 1 lb drop.

Depends. Are we talking BSG 1970s or the modern incarnation? Regardless, beets are dead last.

The only thing that makes those spikes annoying for me is that it can take up to 4 days for my weight to stabilize back down to the right level.

I am a seriously fast eater as well. Which is a shame because I feel like I don't get anything out of it besides the sustenance of the food, I don't enjoy it. But it's a hard habit to break.

Crap! I tried to cheat and save a little money. Went with the cheap cotton pajamas. Hopefully I can get a refund on the elephant.

Immune to pizza calories? Oh man, where is the pill that allows for THAT!

There is a idea that you shouldn't bulk unless you are at a "proper" body fat percentage because otherwise the ratio of fat vs muscle gain for each pound gained would lean more towards fat. However, that is for a bulk, where you eat more than maintenance. A recomp, however, would have you eating AT maintenance. And I think…

I'm 6' 175. I want to get down to 170 or so. But at this point, the number on the scale is less of the goal and body fat percentage is the real goal (better body composition) and weight (fat) loss is simply part of the path to get there.

How the heck does the Garmin know that? Do they have satellites in low earth orbit tracking you by your watch? 😝
-
I can't say why other people might say eating more might help. But here's why I will say it: sustainability. A diet/exercise routine that gets you a 2 lb loss in a month that you quit because it's too much is much worse than one that you can maintain for 6 months that loses 1 lb per month. I don't know you, but I don't…

If you're concerned about price, go to eBay. Plenty of inexpensive devices that were barely used or simply a slight older model that people simply upgraded.

Maybe a more objective measure might've in order, Bodpod or DEXA?

I hear amputation is good for rapid weight loss too. Only problem is you can play that card only so many times. 😝
-
With such a large deficit, I would be sure to make sure you are getting enough protein in your diet to reduce the potential that portions of your weight loss is muscle (vs fat)
-
I've also followed Stronglifts as an endurance athletes. I found the deadlift helped my running because it taught be to more effectively activate certain muscles, like the glutes, during my runs. In a 3x a week lifting schedule, you get 1,1, and 2 days or rest away from lifting. I tend to do my long runs on the first day…

Plenty of people choose to spend more money than they have, putting them at risk for financially bad consequences in the future. That doesn't mean they are addicted to spending. It just means that maybe they made some poor choices.
-
I'm getting the vax when reasonable (I'm in a low risk group), but there is a valid counterpoint to the mortality rate argument and that the fact that the rate doesn't apply equally across the population. Depending on age and other comorbidities, a person's likelihood of death could be far greater or far less.

It is possible to lose lean mass, as many of us have unfortunately found, under the right conditions. Too large of a deficit, not enough protein, and the body will break down some muscle for energy. I believe this is true even if you weight train as it will break down more lean mass than it builds.
-
But doesn't that ignore the fact that to build muscle you have to progressively continue to increase the amount of weight? The bricks don't get heavier.
-
I would have to disagree with that. Muscle is denser than fat, so I would think that the heart has to pump thru more blood vessels if it's fat. Also, and why I replied, is the fact that it's not just about heart health. There are health concerns tied to aidpose fat, for example. Those same concerns obviously wouldn't apply…
