Learning from DNS
My first marathon is scheduled tomorrow, but I already know the result—a DNS. It is high time I made that PT appointment. I cancelled the hotel reservation yesterday, and I can put away the bag containing my racing gear. I packed it earlier this week, on one of those rare days when my leg felt mildly better. I did have…

HM two weeks before full -- do it? -- how?
Two weekends prior to my full there is a HM one hour away; I was thinking of doing it. 1- Is it a good idea to run it? 2- If I do it, how should I go about it? My scheduled run for that day is 90 min easy+30 min at MP (around 7:45-8:00/min, yet to be determined). BUT, if I do the HM I doubt I could slow myself to easy for…

Tim Noakes and Banting...
Is there anyone here who dabbled in Banting diet? I am extremely skeptical about these things but this one is touted by Tim Noakes, an exercise scientist who had some compelling research on running psychology, and fueling and hydration strategies (a bit of dehydration is ok and no/limited carbs while running!!!). I was…

Tailwind
I was planning to start testing some gels in my long weekend runs soon (currently in week 6 of 18 of my marathon plan) then I came across this Tailwind product: http://www.tailwindnutrition.com/why-tailwind/ I am not a big fan of gels and rarely used them other than a couple of times when I ran several 18-20 mile routes 3…

26.2: Forget negative splits?: First half by time, second half by feel
"Don’t run slower to “save energy” for the final miles, because it’s very unlikely that you will be able to make up time at that point, and don’t run faster to “put time in the bank,” as this usually results in a precipitous decline in pace after 20 miles." I just read this by Fitzgerald on how to pace yourself during a…

Fitzgerald fit - again
Ok got it! Run slow to build endurance, develop your muscles and circulation, so you can run a faster marathon. My program by a non-Fitzgerald (so-called) expert --gulp-- (Bobby McGee) says the same things. Train at aerobic zone for 4-5 days a week, and one or two quality runs- which works out roughly to the -what else?-…

Going it alone: Perceived Effort or invest in a heart rate monitor?
Hello all, I started training for my first marathon today and following a plan by Bobby McGee. I was wondering where people land in terms of using a heart rate monitor during training. I do not currently own one. The plan recommends it but says you can do without it by using perceived effort method. However, I'm doing this…

Support + motivation + good vibes
I have been here for 5 days after a long break from MFP, with 30+ to go. I am finding that even with the few friends I have, it helped a lot. So I'm looking to add more. I'm into running and keep an open book. Come audit and get good vibes+support back in return.

Remote running buddies
I am looking to shed a bunch of weight (30+) and get back to running a bit faster. I did lots of half's before, time for the big one this year! Feel free to add me, audit my books!
