The price of glory
This really disturbs me. I understand the Olympics are a big deal for many countries, but this is sad. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2182127/How-China-trains-children-win-gold--standing-girls-legs-young-boys-hang-bars.html

Tips for first 5k?
I'm about 2 weeks out from running my first 5k. Are there any particular tips or advice which any of you would recommend? Etiquette? Preparation? I've been running about 3 miles in the morning, 3 times a week; slow as dirt, so I'll be happy to just cross the finish line. :)

Your E-Book Is Reading You - WSJ Article
I thought this article was rather interesting. I was somewhat disturbed to find that I could not find any mention of the gathering of such information on either the Barnes & Noble or the Amazon web sites, or of a way to opt out. I think there could be some chilling effects as publishers and writers rely on such data to…

Got eHarmony?
Another one bites the dust. Not sure how well they went about notifying people, but if you have an account there it is time to change your password. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2405453,00.asp And based on what I am seeing so far in looking at the hashes, it appears they upper cased all passwords. Bad bad bad.

Is Facebook Messenger That Popular?
I was surprised to see this story on Slashdot. It talks about how the use of Facebook Messenger is starting to cause a decline in text messaging. I find that somewhat hard to believe, because it seems that phone texting would still be faster and more convenient. If it is true, maybe the carriers will reduce their pricing…

Random Slashdot Humor
This reply to a slashdot comment gave me a good laugh: I love having the password on my monitor. However I didn't like the appearance of all those Post-it notes stuck to it. So instead I changed all my passwords to "Samsung".

The Amazing Spider-Man - Thoughts?
Coming back to something I mentioned in another thread. A co-worker and I were discussing the upcoming Spider-man movie. He had asked why the "amazing" Spidey was different from the previous movies.. I like that in some ways they are going back to the original comic. Peter's intelligence and sarcastic comments seem to be…

Who is on your Facebook friends list?
I thought this was an interesting article. A school principal appears to have posed as a student on Facebook, in order to gain information. Shortly after the profile was called out as being fake, it disappeared and the principal resigned.…

Slowly but surely
I'm still not quite where I want to be, but I thought the difference was pretty noticeable when looking at some pictures. The left is from about a month ago (I've been in a bit of a stall lately), and the one on the right is from late Nov 2011. I haven't take any measurements, but went from 36 waist jeans to 34. Left: 186…

Burn Baby, Burn
Found this while browsing around last night: http://www.scottrobertsweb.com/scoville-scale.php Who has tried some of the sauces listed there? Any recommendations? I think my tolerance for heat is a lot less than it used to be, but I am going to be trying some of those. :)

Push up bars. Worth it?
Hello, I'm thinking about getting some push up bars. I find that after my wrists tend to hurt slightly at the end of a set; it doesn't last long, but it is a bit concerning. I've read that push up bars can help relieve joint pain, as well as providing a greater range of motion. For those of you who use them, do push up…

Hello, from Tempe AZ
Hello, I'm Anthony, and pretty new to this site. I've been mostly lurking for a couple of weeks. In the past I managed to drop about 20 pounds, by watching my diet more closely and spending time on the treadmill, and got somewhat frustrated when I hit a plateau. This time I intend to do even better. I need the strength to…
