Fun weightlifting milestone
Yesterday, I lifted more than my body weight for the first time that I can remember. Deadlifts 1x5 @315lbs, with body weight at 307lbs as of that morning. I'd do a happy dance if I weren't so sore.

Balancing heavy weightlifting and other workouts
Hey all, I've been hitting the gym 3x per week for the last 3.5 months or so, doing the StrongLifts program followed by up to 30 minutes of cardio. I've decided that I'm in good enough shape now that I can start taking up martial arts training again, which I haven't done since my teens, but have wanted to get back into for…

Anyone doing SL5x5 in Brampton, ON, looking for partner?
Bit of a shot in the dark, here, but what the heck. I've been following the StrongLifts 5x5 program on my own for a bit over 3 months. I work out at LA Fitness at Kennedy and Steeles, generally M-W-F in the evenings after work. It'd be cool to have a partner to work out with (be it regularly, or even just occasionally), to…

Unfamiliar knee pain
Hey all, I've tried to do some research on this online, but I'm not sure of the proper terms to narrow the search. Since yesterday I've had some pain in my left knee, and I'm wondering if I should skip doing squats in my workout tonight. It feels like sort of a pinching sensation that happens only when leg is fully…

Here we go again...
I had been doing pretty well since I started on MFP back in January, until a couple weeks ago. There's quite a lot of stress lately, mainly around the fact that we're expecting our first baby anytime now, and I'm constantly feeling scared and unprepared about that. I fell right off the wagon, eating tons of whatever was…

Dilemma (weight and life insurance)
There's probably no "right" answer for this; I'm just looking for opinions. My weigh-in and measurements this morning (using the military calculator on fat2fit) put me at 314.1 pounds, 39.7% body fat, and roughly 190 pounds of lean mass. I applied for life insurance recently, to make sure my wife and baby are taken care of…

Wow...
Not sure if this has been posted here before, but man... the little aches and discomforts I got while trying to exercise at 350 were nothing compared to what this guy has done. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qX9FSZJu448

Advice on barbell lifts (squats, mainly)
Hey all, Up until last week, I'd been lifting weights with dumbbells in my home. I just joined a gym so I could switch over to using barbells, and went in for the freebie training session they offered with the membership. I'm pretty sure my form on the squats was horrible. I didn't feel like I was going down far enough…

"Netting BMR" is a mathematically flawed concept
Hi everyone, This has become my pet peeve on the MFP forums lately, and I noticed that it's in the sticky posts for this group a fair bit. Before I get into the math, let me make it clear that I am not recommending that anyone eat an unhealthy low amount of food, and that I agree with the basic premise of this group…

Exercise Calories versus Daily Activity, eating BMR+
I know this topic is discussed a lot in other threads, but there seems to be a big hole in some of the arguments about eating at least your BMR which has been bothering me. Some people say to eat (gross) at least your BMR while still maintaining a reasonable deficit below your TDEE. While I haven't seen any scientific…

Seeking advice on home strength training
Hi all, I'm about to move into a new house with an attached garage, and I'm planning to use some of that space to set up some additional exercise equipment. In my current apartment, I've been getting by with a set of Power Blocks and a swiss ball to save on space, but that is fairly limiting in terms of maximum weight and…

Diary accuracy when dining out (or buying food without label
I've been tracking my meals on MFP for about a month now, and have run this situation a few times. Last weekend, we attended a funeral, and most of my food for the day was of the "quarter sandwiches, fruits and veggies or desserts on a tray" variety. I tried to estimate that as best I could, but most likely, my counts for…
