Is it true that we can eat whatever we want as long as it within our alotted calories. And we are working out. This is just in a situation to lose weight.

I just read somewhere that whole wheat bread and skim milk is not good for dieting if anyone knows good alternatives Please let me know. Because I just went shopping for my diet and thought I was doing the right thing. So if anyone knows please share .....
