New Week's Resolution - Week 4
Welcome to the first week of the rest of your life! Now seems like a perfect time to select a New Week's Resolution. What is a New Week's Resolution? It's exactly the same as a New Year's Resolution, with two important distinctions: it only lasts for one week, and you can start one any time you want, rather than just once…

10 Million Pounds Lifted 2024
This is a personal challenge to myself, and a thread to hold myself accountable. If anybody else wants to join with their own end-of-year goal, kudos! Back in 2018, I had to give up my gym membership to pay for braces for two of my kids. To replace my preferred weightlifting, I set a goal of 100,000 pushups over the course…

Blank pages at end of multi-page threads
Many multi-page threads have suddenly (within the last 48 hours) added page after page of blank content at the end. For example, if I open the "Questions Only" thread, the last response is on page 5088, but the hyperlink to "most recent response" jumps to page 5164! Single-page threads do not seem to be affected.

Slow and steady
For the past four months, I've been restricted from weight lifting due to an elbow tendon injury. (Sure, I could've done legs only, but nah.) During that time I hit the cardio hard, figuring I may as well cut. Dropped 15 pounds in that time. Today were the twin good news of being cleared to reenter the weight room, plus my…

How to set up a weightlifting routine
So you've made the decision to start weightlifting. First, welcome to the Brotherhood & Sisterhood of Iron! Weightlifting is a fabulous method to improve fitness. The benefits of lifting go way beyond simply becoming physically stronger and looking muscular. Some of the benefits include, but are not limited to: * Increased…

PSA - Beware These Scams!
The purpose of this thread is to identify scams we (or loved ones) have either fallen prey to or avoided, and we want to spread the word to warn others. Please do not identify specific names or websites, just the general nature of the scam.

In the last 5 pages of "Recent Discussions"...
...there are 16 threads created by new MFP members introducing themselves, and 17 threads of people complaining about the Newsfeed. People introducing themselves to the community, providing a little background, asking for support, deserve a thread to themselves. But 17 separate threads for the same issue (newsfeed)? Before…

Adding "-ing" to a movie title
For this game, add "-ing" to a movie title, and give a brief synopsis of what the new, revised movie would be about. For example: Fellowship of the Ringing - move over, Pitch Perfect, it's time for a battle of bell choirs! The Two Towering - twin brothers, separated at birth, grow up to become star basketball players who…

30+ Tips to Increase Strength Training Intensity
Brothers and sisters of iron, welcome! Resistance training is a wonderful method to increase strength, improve muscle tone/size, and work off some aggression in a positive manner. (I would get in trouble tossing *insert source of annoyance* around, so instead I will toss around some heavy pieces of iron.) Newcomers to the…

Celebrate Intentional Weight Gain
At present, if you want to lose weight and succeed, MFP posts on your wall your accomplishment. If you gain weight, it does not post, sticking just to positive outcomes. But what about those of us who are actually TRYING to gain weight? This includes people who are underweight, along with bodybuilders like myself who are…

What's YOUR personalized license plate?
I don't know if it's the same in other countries, but here in the USA when you register your vehicle you have a choice of license plates: the state can issue you a random collection of numbers and letters for the base registration price, or you can elect to pay extra and choose what your plate will say (within reason...the…

How many jobs have YOU had?
A coworker hits 30 years on the job tomorrow, the only job he's ever had. Meanwhile, my son is 22 and has had over a dozen different jobs already in his short life. Got me thinking about how many paying jobs I've had. Mowing lawns High school cafeteria Tutor Camp counsellor College cafeteria Fast food delivery College TA…

Dogs, formerly friends, now fighting
My son is getting ready to marry his girlfriend in a couple months. Each of them has a dog, both female (one neutered), and for the last six months of living under one roof the dogs have been quite good together. Grooming each other, sleeping close, light play. Not sure what's changed, but a couple weeks ago they suddenly…

NFL Divisional Quartets
Listening to a sports-talk radio show while driving home from work the other day, one of the radio hosts posed this question to his counterpart: "The AFC North has four teams. Tell me who you would include in the strongest quartet of players. One player per team, one player per position of QB, RB, WR, TE." This little…

Happy Star Wars Day!
May the 4th Be With You! All the 20-something kids at work are always amazed when I tell them I've seen every single Star Wars movie in theater when they were originally released. "Including the originals? But that's like a hundred years ago!" Thanks, kid, like I didn't already feel old, lol.

WHAT dad bod?
Earned my letterman's jacket in school running both sprints and cross country 5k's, graduated rail thin at 150 lb. Between adult size kicking in during college, plus joining the military, I was a very fit 160 lb. But work started taking time away from exercise, night shifts proved a disaster for my menu (TONS of sodas and…

What's your FIRST memory
Science says, on average, the earliest permanent memory for most people occurs around age 4...everything before that is forgotten, or so badly blurred that you can't accurately place a date, location, etc. Some few people can remember younger than that...my adult son can recall clearly an event from when he was age two.…

Crashed laptop question
Not sure where else to post this, but I'll reference the "support" part of this board to ask a computer-support related question that is not MFP-related. My personal laptop sort of died on me. I say "sort of" because I can power it on, login with my password, and the programs I use are all there and operational. But every…

Gym Headphones Advice
I’ve used the same set of headphones since I started lifting weights 13 years ago. They’re over-ear with a cord which extends to my iPod in my pocket, and have finally started to show their age, with one side no longer making noise. (I know it’s not an iPod issue, because the headphones behave the same whether I plug into…

Trimming fat from your household budget
Over the recent holiday weekend, my wife and I were discussing all the various bills we had, from medical (dental and veterinary) to car repair. Rather than despair, we decided to find the money wasters in our family budget and work on trimming them, see just how much we could save per month. Our list so far: Cable (we…

Senior Moment
When you forget something obvious, only to remember it later, it's called having a "senior moment." But it can happen at any age. So...what did you forget recently?

Thread Ignoring
Currently, posters have the option to ignore all posts from specific users. (Or at least the option existed prior to the recent upgrade...does it still?) I recommend an option to allow users to ignore specific threads: the thread thereafter will not appear in the list of available discussions, the user will not be notified…

Limited Movie Theaters
A couple months ago, my wife saw a preview for a movie which intrigued her. It said release date would be Halloween weekend. As the weekend approached, we made plans to go on a date night to see the movie. However, the day of release came, and when we went online to find out showtimes, we discovered the movie was being…

How frequently to change up lifting routine
I've been lifting for over 12 years now, and over that span have tried a large variety of lifts for each body part. When I was younger and had the time, I'd try to incorporate EVERYTHING into my workouts, which could easily result in 2-hr long sessions. These days I limit myself to 45-60 minutes per session, so I've had to…
