Pain above the ankle?

First off I'm well aware I need new running shoes and a gait analysis at my local running store but that's an hour away and off the table until I've saved up enough for books. So does anyone have any stretches I can do to ease off pain? Its just above the ankle on the outside and goes up about 3 inches. That muscle feels really tight and its painful when I'm attempting to run and I'd really like to get out of week 1 sometime in the next 6 weeks. :(

If you're only in week one then I'd question whether this is shoe related or not, I'm not a big advocate of getting gait analysis until 5 or 6 weeks in as it tkaes time to settle on your running style.

In the absence of any more information it's hard to say what the issue is, but I'd veer towards overstriding, going too fast in your run intervals or a strength imbalance.

It's really not a question of easing off the pain, that's telling you that something isn't right. Treat the cause of the pain instead.

Short, quick, light paces, avoid bouncing up and down and run at a smooth pace where you can comfortably talk.

Shouldn't be strength I do some bodyweight training to help with that emphasis on lower body since I'm not supposed to put a lot of weight on one shoulder. I hit midfoot, sing along with my music while I'm going along, and don't bounce much (I'm fairly large busted and don't wear a normal bra for running without any problems.) But this pain occurs also when I'm just walking and it only occurs in that pair of shoes, my server shoes are fine the boots I wear constantly fine, its just that one pair.

Sounds like you know the answer then...

Which is why I asked for stretches. I know the solution but its not feasible right now so something to at least ease the tightness is what I'm looking for.

It sounds like you have shin splints, which are microfractures on the front of the lower leg. The treatment for shin splints is rest. Mitigation for the cause of shin splints depends on what that cause is.

You're not going to stretch your way out of it, particularly if this is affecting you after only 60 seconds of running.

Appropriate, properly fitting shoes is your next option.

So at this point my old vans or my boots are a better option until new shoes become feasible.

I would suggest not running until you can get decent shoes in that case.

    I have a similar problem..
I started running and was doing well (for me: 2 mins non-stop) then, I gained weight (over 20lb in 2 months) which is why I am back on here trying to sort myself out.
I'm going really well and I've lost 7.5lb so I tried running again, but I got terrible pain above my ankles, in my shins. Someone suggested it was shin splints - but I don't know what that is. I assumed it was because I am simply too heavy to run at the moment.

I have running shoes that I bought at a store where they did gait analysis, so I know it is nothing to do with the shoes.

    Any thoughts?
