I have been SO FAMISHED lately! like my stomach is crawling up my throat to EAT MORE! I try to drink water and wait to see if the hunger goes away- like it used to-- but now it just gets worse when I drink water. I'm so hungry I can't walk straight or think straight!.

I am usually not famished. usually I do just fine on the 1600 calories a day.

Sara suggested 1600 cal/day for me. it was an increase because I started lifting weights. I have been doing Stronglifts 5x5 for 4 wweeks (was doing ust randdom stuff at the gym two weeks before that) I have not weigghed/measured since week#1. my weigh in/measure date is next Monday.

Is this just coommon from time to time? to be so unbelievably famished for a few days when weight lifting?

(other info- I am 41, weigh about 134# , 5'6", I do Strongllifts 3 times a week- with very slow progression, I don't do much cardio- a walk or bike ride twice a week and some garddening (and regular housework) my diary is open.

my Macro goals are:
Protein- 120-140 (I was told I need approx 110, but my migraines and low blood sugar do beter with 130~)
Fats- 45ish
Carbs- whatever is left- usually aroung 120-150

I'm having the same issue and just bumped up my calories so I'm interested to see the responses.

I would have automatically done that is I had not increased 200 cals/day when I started Stronglifts 4 weeks ago... and it's not like I went from lifting 30# to 150#

but maybe that is what I need to do.

When I'm that hungry, I eat. 1600 sounds low to me for your activity level - and at your weight, height, and age.

Could just be that your body is looking for a refeed.

If you do stenuous exercise enough, at a calorie deficit, you sometimes deplete your reserves enough that your body starts to let you know, hey...give me something.

Could also be a hormonal thing...

You are making sure you are still consuming good amounts of water right?

what is the difference between a 'refeed' and just 'eating a lot more'..or binge.. or whatever the latest term is.
I think I drink enough. I don't count oz, but my urine is very pale- I go by that.

I had my uterus out last year, but still have my ovaries- so who knows that my hormones are doing.

    THANKS!

Yep, this. If you are that hungry, seriously, you should eat. You should not be ignoring genuine hunger like that, it is your body telling you it needs something.

I don't do much of anything (exercise wise) than they 3day a week lifting and I don't always get the 2 times a week walk/bike. I have chronic fatigue and feel like I lay around a lot.

I am not sure if it is real hunger and not just a trick of the mind craving... I ate about 250 cals above my goal today and it was a rest day.
Maybe tomorrow I will feel better.

Refeed is simply eating at your maintenance to get an influx of calories/nutrients back in your system...it's more "controlled" than binging...it's still eating "more" than you were, but you are simply controlling the process so it doesn't turn into something else. And people tend to do it more planned and not full of high calorie/sugar meals that don't have alot of nutrition in them.

Yes, I mean, the body doesn't sort of have a set daily routine, in the sense that, you will have days, maybe weeks, where your appetite is stronger than other days and weeks. As to hunger, genuine hunger, for me it would be things like nausea, rumbling tummy, and at a more extreme end, actual gnawing stomach pain. I only sort of learnt to recognise that when I did Intermittent Fasting for a while.

Hi everyone. Could you all give me some time to respond as I want to base it on other advice we have given the OP as well as any specific additional input I may seek. Thank you :flowerforyou:

OK, just refamilaized myself with the prior advice and it is good timing as we asked you to follow up in 4 weeks about 4 weeks ago so that we could see what your weight was doing without the added confusion of water weight fluctuations due to increased lifting.

What has your weight done over the last 4 weeks? Weekly increments if you have them.

I weighed myself 3 weeks ago and had gone up 1-2 pounds, it was early in the SL5x5 program and I decided to weight a month to re weigh, which would be next Monday, June 3rd. (Or 2nd?, where,s my calendar?)

My weight lifting weights are all higher. Some more than others.
I did my squats at 30# for about 4 sessions as I was getting an awful knot on my left scapula muscle region (possible from mild scoliosis??)
Then my back got used to it and I have going up 2-4 pounds a session and am now squatting around 55-60#
My Bench Press is at at 60, as is my barbell row. They both started around 40#.

My OHP started at 30" goes up a bit and down a bit, I can't get past 50#. I am back down to 40#
My deadlifts started at 90# and I did 128# on Friday and hope to get to 135 on Wednesday.

I had Two bad lifting days due to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and one due to a bad migraine.

I guess I should weight and measure myself, but just did a small weight lifting workout today, so maybe I should wanting a few days (move my next strong lift to Thirsday and weigh/measure Thursday morning... Or just wait till next Monday like planned and check back in with the Info Monday?)

There is a little more to this than simple calories. Satiety plays a factor into things such as this. I follow IIFYM but I utilize non-processed foods to help control hunger, due to the effectiveness of non processed foods for hunger.

I am not saying I dont eat processed foods. I am eating ice cream atm and I ate sweet tarts not that long ago.

Just have to find a balance between both imo

it is usually the day after I lift. I usually lift around 2-4 PM.
But I was famished since Thursday last week. I finally feel better today. (went over my cals about 250 yesterday)

)PS- the pic is to celebrate having my fibroid-tumor removed last year-- it's "anniversary week'- it is not how I look from over-eating yesterday)

Do you still feel like eating your arm with the extra couple hundred calories the day after lifting days?

In the beginning, no, but the last couple weeks, YES!

In the beginning, no, but the last couple weeks, YES!

Would you be comfortable weighing every day for at least a week? I want to try to see if a refeed helps - and time it with one of your lifting days.

Usually a refeed involves upping carbs and decreasing fats -with total calories being at about maintenance. However, refeeds can make you very hungry on the day of the refeed and not hungry the day after (depends on the individual) because fats are low which are satiating. With you I would like to keep your fats at a normal level and just up carbs - and focus on the more satiating carbs (ones higher in fiber).

When doing a refeed, we like to monitor how your weight does on a daily basis so we can use that data going forward - some people react well to them re weight loss, and others not so much.

Would this be something you are interested in trying out to see how you respond?

Sure. a refeed is only one day, isn't it? why do you need me to weight daily? I don't mind weighing daily, just curious.

I did a 'half-weigh-lifting day' Monday- (migraine weekend). I planned on lifting today- ( Mon/Wed/Fri are my normal days)
But I went for an 8 mile hike at a muddy, hillly nature preserve and my legs are jello today So I will lift Thursday.

** I weighed myself today. in 4 weeks of eating ~1600 cals with your suggested macros and doing SL5X5, I lost 1# and went from 25.5% BF to 23% BF- according to the caliper chart. (I still feel like I look the same in the belly/hip pudge area....LOL, but my clothes fit a bit nicer)

THANKS SARA! 2.5% BF seem like a great loss!! Thanks for your help. I am almost to my goal!!

We like people to weigh daily so we can monitor their reaction to refeeds and see if it makes sense to include as a regular thing - it also helps determine how often to refeed. Refeeds are usually about once a week - but we just want to try it once and monitor to see how you do.

And YAY - getting there. Those last few pounds are damn stubborn!

I lift around in the afternoon. usually around 2 or 3.
Do you want me to have my refeeb on my lifting day? I have read a few different places online and eveyoe has their own different opinion on when. most suggest having it on a rest day. I'll go with whatever you suggest.

    My plans next week are:
    Monday-Lift
    Tuesday- Rest
    Wed - Lift
    Thursday- hike
    Friday- Lift

but I can change those around. and, normally, Thursdays are my rest days anyway.
