Is anyone else having a hard time?

This is my fifth week and yesterday was my fast day and I failed miserably.

This is what happens to me.... I get light headed, I get headaches and when I get home I sit my butt on my couch and watch tv till bedtime. It seems to be all I can do other than sleep.

Is this what happens to you guys? I did lose 10 lbs in 4 weeks and that thrills me but the days I fast are days I get out of work early and try to get things done at home... well that's not happening. If I fast on days I work, I definitely won't be able to concentrate on work.

Any suggestions?

Do you cut your caffein intake on fast days? Are you getting enough sodium on fast days? Sometimes a coffee, black tea or a bouillon work wonders against the symptoms your having.

What do you eat the day before your fast day?

I think the better prepared I am, the less fatigue I feel. For example: I typically have an after dinner snack (on maintenance days) popcorn is my favorite. If I know that the next day is a fast day....I make the snack Greek yogurt instead. I don't know (fairly new still) but I think the added protein helps.

I do get plenty of caffeine on fast days.....but I'll have to test out the sodium too.

How about your total calorie intake - FD and NFDs together? 2.5 lbs per week is a pretty large number. Maybe you need to eat a little more to keep up your energy? You may not lose as much but you will be able to stick with the plan much longer and in the end that is the goal. One should be able to do 5:2 and still live life vertically. :)

^^Agreed! That is why I do it. I don't feel restricted, was able to enjoy my life and still lose my weight. Now it is my tool for maintainance and enjoying life a little more...

Thank you for all your responses!!!

@flumi_f , I drink more caffeine on my fast days, doesn't seem to help though. Sometimes I think It makes me hungrier, is that crazy? As for the sodium, I honestly don't know, I never look at my sodium intake but it's not something that I try to decrease. I never add salt to anything but I never have.

@TeaBea, The day before my fast I usually eat 1800-2000 calories. I do not deprive myself that's for darn sure ;) I do not eat late at night (7 is usually the latest) because I never sleep well when I eat too late.

@jknight001, my weekly calorie intake with FD are over 11,000, with the exception of one week.

My diary is open although I did no fasting this week. I will resume next Tuesday.
My fast days are Sun and Tue and last week I switched to Tue and Fri.

Thank you again everyone! I survived a month and I don't want to quit but I want my fast days to be productive.

You look fantastic! How long have you done this for?

@Tiamo719 - 1 yr in weightloss mode (strict fasts 500-550 + TDEE on the other days) and now 6mth in maintainance, with a bit more cals on non fast days. I actually still have 2-3kg I'd like to lose, but life has been hectic, so I kind of took a break. It is nice to know, that I can maintain with the fasts.

Okay, so when you say +TDEE, is it your TDEE for maintaining?

Have you ever gone over 550?

@Tiamo - I've definitely gone over 550. I've only 'failed' my fasts a few times (over 800 in my book), like just yesterday....fell into the peanut butter jar after my workout :-(. Ah well. Next week I will do better. Each fast varies. Some are easy, some are hard. I tend to go with the flow.

TDEE are the cals you need to maintain. I calculate my TDEE without exercise (not the usual way) and then can eat most of the exercise cals back. I do this for two reasons. Firstly my workouts vary alot from week to week in type, length, burn and secondly it motivates me a little more to go on that extra run in the evening or add another few kilometers on my weekend round. Thus my TDEE is around 1600-1700 cals without exercise. If I get in a good run on a given day, that will allow me 2000-2200. I play with that a bit. Others include their workouts in their TDEE and then have the same cal allowance every day (except on fast days). IMO it doesn't really matter how you do it, as long as you keep a deficit while trying to lose weight.

My cal allowance is still set to TDEE + exercise on normal days, but I've obviously been going over that quite often (probably closer to 1900+exercise), as I've maintained the last 6mth, while continuing to fast. Though I would like to lose those last 2-3kg, my mind wasn't in the right place and I am glad to be able to maintain with the fasts. The alarm goes off when I hit 58kg, then I get serious again until I hit 57kg, rewind and repeat ;-). Staying in that tight range, is already a win in my book.

@Flumi_f - you are an inspiration!

@Tiamo719 - My world is very small right now (I'm a stay at home Mum and at the tail end of completing my Phd). My days are mainly spent looking after the kids, writing up my thesis or shopping for the house. So my fast days are manageable because I'm at home most of the time.

In the mornings I find that if I have tea or coffee with milk and sugar that helps keep the headache away. When the kids come home from school (3ish) I am incredibly hungry and a complete BEAR, so I tend to send the kids upstairs to play so they don't needlessly get yelled at, but once I get my diner (which I eat around 4:30pm) I am at complete peace. My husband comes home around 6, so I am then in the mode of getting him fed and at that point I switch off my eating head.

I know that when I start back at work after I finish my studies it will be a whole different ball game and I will have to try and figure out how my fast days will work then, but fingers crossed I will be in maintenance by then and only fasting once a week.

@snaps27 - Wow! You've got alot on your plate! All I do is go to work and take care of myself! But if you like cooking for your hubby, I'm pretty sure he enjoys that too!
