Great job everyone...always enjoy reading your stories.

    @angela233Z
I will sometimes do 24 hours at ~0 calories as an extra fast (a 3rd fast) if I am just trying to makeup for something bad I did (like a weekend full of pizza). From my experimentation on myself I'm convinced (~80% sure) that I need at least 2 fasts of 40 hours or longer per week to lose weight consistently. The reason I say "or longer" is because I am waiting for my body to let me know when the fast is over...I'm waiting for what I call a "cleanse". Stop reading now if you don't want the specifics...but it's when my body decides to get rid of everything it's been holding on to. Drinking water doesn't really matter at that point because it drops through quicker than...well, you know. I have seen myself lose 5 lbs in a matter of hours; many times I thought I'd be reporting my first weekly gain and then my body just starts doing its thing and before you know it I'm showing a loss. This doesn't seem to be out of the ordinary...even though I haven't really heard anyone else in this group mention it. I have heard (2nd hand) that people doing longer fasts (2 brothers who would fast 14 days a year...yes, in a row) also found that their bodies started to cleanse (or detoxify) somewhere around the 2 day mark. So I shoot for 42+ hours on my Monday fasts and try to hit 48 on Thursdays...but usually only if I need it (and I don't shame myself/beat myself up if I miss). If I was good over the weekend and wind up with a small loss after my Monday fast then I'll give myself a break...and may just stop my Thursday fast at the 36 hour mark. No, it's not easy, but I've done fasts of 49 and 50 hours so I know I can...thinking about it doesn't worry me...it's a mountain I've already climbed. It's become second nature to me now and if I can do 2 days on less than 600 calories (as the heaviest person in this group?) then I'm sure (medical issues aside) that anyone can do it. Remember, I got to this size by feeling out of control and "thinking" to myself "I am starving!" after just 6 hours without a burger in my hand. It was in my mind...the weakness was there. If you want to try and find out if or when your body might go into a cleanse then start with small goals...if you can do 36 hours you definitely can do 38...if you can do 38 then you can do 40...you get the picture. I will usually get a thermogenic reaction (parts of my body heat up) that tells me my metabolism is spiking...mostly in my face and head. In the past I would probably have thought I was getting dizzy and needed to eat, or I would get paranoid thinking "ok, I just crossed over into diabetes"...again weakness of the mind and self-imposed ignorance. Having a clean/good blood analysis before I started fasting helped me to stop thinking this way...I would suggest this for everyone...no good can come from not knowing.

Well that turned into something bigger than expected. It'd be interesting to hear from others on if they've detected some of these same reactions in their own bodies.

    Good Luck

The scale has finally started moving again, and I couldn't be happier. 4lb down this week, after so many weeks staying the same.

@Orlcam. I have noticed the warming up of my face towards the end of my fast, but they generally are no longer than 36/38 hours. I think I'm going to try for a 40 hour one next week and see how I get on with that.

Will report back next week. :)

@snaps27 - Congratulations on another 2.2 lbs! You are doing great!

@snaps27 and @thecarbmonster I am so inpired by you both. When I want to complain about having to lose 20 lbs I remember how you have more to lose and keep showing up week after week getting the job done. So glad I get to be pulled along by the tailwind you ladies create.

    @jknight001 you are incredibly sweet!

I do find this on my fasting days. Sorry in advance, but its like 'where did that all come from...I haven't even eaten anything yet!' But its like my body is just getting rid of everything...cleansing I guess.

Was a little over yesterday, but managed another 1.3 lbs for the week with only 1 fast day. I'll take it.

snaps: If your last meal is at 5pm on Sunday and the next day Monday is your fast (500 cals.) then Tues. at 9am would equal 40 hrs. fast not Wed.

Yes...~600 calories. I will eat usually at the 24 hour mark and then not eat until my fast is over, no matter the length. Then in the 24 hours that follow I try to stick to around 75% of my MFP TDEE, but I've blown it on the weekends lately. It is definitely harder with the bad food...pizza, steaks, bbq, etc. I've been having to push my fasts longer while waiting for a cleanse. This weekend was especially bad...steaks (2 days) with the fixins including smoked boudin, and a lot of peanut butter and chocolate (and cookies). I didn't gain as much as I had on some previous weekends but since the food was so crazy it's taking a long time to get rid of it. It could be the cold weather too, but I'm currently on my longest fast ever and my body is just now starting a significant cleanse. I'm now at >56 hours and think I'll need at least 2 more. That's on about 900 calories, ~250 of that was dark chocolate (85% cocoa).

Gotta get back to eating lots of fiber & protein on Sundays...for the whole 24 hours before I fast, not just the last meal.

@carbmonster - big changes all around, I'd say! Well done!

6 weeks post op.... lots of re-firsts this week
    Tuesday: first run 6.4k
Wednesday: 30min swim/treading water (2nd time post op)
Thursday: Jillian 30 day shred level 1
Friday: Jillian 30 day shred level 2 (started the wrong link by accident and went with it ;-) )

It all went well, but I still have to be a bit careful with the jiggeling. I'm glad about two things though....being able to workout again and wanting to work out again after a long break, thus not procrastinating to get back at it.

Fasts on Mo/We/Fr...not perfect, but they went quite well. Have been going up and down between 58-59kg......and I'd rather be doing that 1-2kg lower, so I opted for a 4:3 week. Will be measuring tomorrow to see what getting back into my routine does for my muscles. I feel, I have lost some of my ab and arm strength in the last 6 weeks even though my cardio stamina is still almost as good.

First horse back ride tomorrow too. Something I have missed just as much as my workouts!

Next week: Fasts on Mo / We as on Thursday I am being treated to a complete head to toe makeover and styling by a local paper. Party with about 15 friends afterwards in a nice bar. Thought going home after such an awesome day, wouldn't be an option, so it's kind of a belated birthday party. So looking forward to it and would like to go weighing 57kg ;-)

Have a wonderful weekend and keep up the good work.

Weigh-in day for me today. Down 2.2lbs :) Happiness and Joy!! This is the lowest number I have ever seen, but I guess if the trend continues I will continue to see lowest numbers.

For me I have never had a low weight. There's no skinny jeans to get into. I've always had a high weight ever since I was 16 (maybe even earlier) so this is all brand new territory for me. I have no idea what I will look like at a low weight. A bit scary really, my true self, I've never met her :# .

Awesome snaps! I was always overweight / obese. There were no pics of me at a normal weight, because I never existed at a normal weight...until last January at the age of 45. Keep chugging along and you'll make it there too! And you could really love the new you. It's a great thing to discover who was in there all along!

    Awesome! Both of you.

For me it's a bit different, but still somehow weird. I wasn't overweight as a child, teenager, young adult... But I grew up with a mother who was very skinny and valued this fact a lot. I am small and curvy/muscular, so even at normal weight I wasn't fitting her idea of thin. She always made me feel too fat. I actually gained weight when I was pregnant with my first child. Well, and getting older, desk job, too many stupid diets, getting too comfy...

Today I skipped my fasting. I just couldn't. I am going to menstruate soon and have a cold, my mind and body said no. Maybe I will add a third day next week - my weekends are "holy" ! No fasting. But even if not, I don't feel like I messed up my whole plan/diet now. And that'one of the ob great things about 5:2

You definitely didn't mess up Neonbeige! You listened to what your body told you. That is great. And yes some role models can mess you up. Nothing against your mom. Sometimes they just don't realize, what they are doing, when they obsess about food / weight /etc.

Well, I am back on track after my 1.2 lb gain last week. Many thanks to all of you for letting me whine and did not tell me to buck up and put on my big girl pants.

Even though I didn't stick to my TDEE because of the many parties this week and only was able to fast one day, I was able to lose, ta-dah!, .4 lbs. I will take that and run with it.

Great week everyone! You all worked hard at taking care of yourself. That is awesome. Have a great weekend hanging with those that fill your up your love tank.

    Week 11 - 0.4 lbs (0.18 kg)
Total loss as of 11/14/14 9.0 lbs (4.08 kg)

Rarely...in the last month I experienced 1 headache. I think I may have mentioned it...maybe not. It could just as well have been computer related (long hours staring at the monitor) or from allergies. I stay hydrated though, I'm sure that helps. I do get tired...and mainly I think it is because of not sleeping initially...when my temperature rises (thermogenic reaction) it also seems to accompany a boost in mental activity, so a lot of laying in bed and pondering the meaning of life (hehe). Eventually I fall asleep, but my dreams also seem more vivid/real...could be the mental boost or that I'm in a state between rem and consciousness which allows me to remember more when I wake up (up oh...could be a breakthrough into lucid dreaming). Could also be the brain repairing itself, like Dr. Moseley has mentioned.

Anyway...I just finished my longest fast (66 hours) at ~1000 calories. I felt I could have gone longer. I planned on ending it around 58 hours but because I had difficulty sleeping last night I fell asleep around 10 am this morning and woke up around 4 pm (one of the perks of working from home). What I found interesting was that when I woke up I wasn't hungry...it felt almost exactly like the previous day (when I was at the ~40th hour). I took a walk to get the mail (about 150 yards)...came back in, had a mini-cleanse, and figured ok, that's good enough. With the horrible weekend and actually a pretty bad Tuesday I was able to get 1.8 lbs for the week....I'll take it. Was the bad eating worth having to fast more than 110 hours this week? No, not this time, but I expect there will be times when it will be worth it (maybe thanksgiving or christmas) and now I know I can pull it off and I have no anxiety about it (remember Dr. Mosley in the documentary contemplating his 4 day fast while sitting on the beach? ...seemed like it frightened him a bit.)

I'm sitting here eating 2 lbs of lasagna (no worries...I cooked it, only 505 cal per lb) and noting that I haven't completely devoured it like I've done after past fasts. Maybe I'm reaching some kinda food/life zen/balance here at the end of this 66 hour fast...oops, there I go again...damn the meaning of life. This opens up my mind as to why many people do this for religious reasons...I can see/feel flashes of calmness or enlightenment (euphoria is too strong of a word, but after 7 days of fasting...who knows.) Interesting to say the least.

So 52 lbs in 3.5 months (last week I hit 50 lbs in 100 days)...confidence is up, energy is up...and life is "looking" up.

    Thanks 5:2ers

I will go out on a limb here and say in the past I have done fasts for religious reasons. I think my longest one was 5 days but mostly I averaged 3 days. Needless to say I did not work during the longer fasts. I found that the third day was the "turning point" day where I had much more energy than the first two days and I was no longer suffering.

I found the fasts to be a great time to cast off the busyness of preparing food and eating. It is amazing how much time I spend thinking about, preparing and eating food. There is a peace that comes when I don't have to negotiate three meals a day. It becomes a wonderful experience of getting to know myself and my Creator better. Jesus says "When you fast..." so the expectation for his followers was fasting was not optional. He knew the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of it.

So I had been using MFP to help me do a basic daily calorie reduction. I found it time consuming to record what I eat everyday because it is so varied. I was browsing the groups one day and saw the 5:2 Fasting group. I was so intrigued. A plan that would combine fasting with weight loss! I had to try it. For me it felt like I would be combining the spiritual with the physical.

The interesting thing is that even though it is not a complete water only fast and it is only two days a week for me, like you I find my thoughts are clearer, I too am more contemplative, more joyful, and more connected with God. Don't have the more lucid dreams. I may be too old for that. ;)

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I am sure you put to words what a lot of people are thinking.

Kind of. I applied at the beginning of the summer. It's something the paper does about 6x per year. Anyone can apply and they picked me from over 100 people! The lady called me in August and was so amazed at my story (sent her my before and after pics ;-) ), that she said, she totally wanted to do a makeover with me and print my story. We decided to wait until after my operation and the recuperation, thus it is next week.

It's an awesome present, as it's worth 4000 Swiss Francs. Which is alot of money by my standards. Hair, makeup, clothes, shoes, glasses, styling tipps....the works. :):) And a two page article with pics in the paper. It's gonna be fun. I've never done anything like it. As I've never been of normal weight, I'm really looking forward to the tips they give and I'm hoping for an outfit with a dress or skirt and another pair of boots ;-)

I see it as more of a domino affect of chemical reactions that can create the feelings/emotions we both referenced. I'm not sure I would go so far as to say fasting was meant to not be optional (but I respect your interpretation)...remember that Jesus and his disciples followed many Jewish traditions...fasting was just one of them. I think what he is trying to say in Matthew 6 is that when you do fast (if you do) that it should be done in private, and that people shouldn't walk around with drawn an sullen faces trying to prove to everyone how much they are suffering for their religion. It should be done in secrecy because it's between only you and God.

I have to admit that I am not a religious man so my opinion should be taken in stride...I'm only approaching it from a scientific slant, but wanted to say (in my previous post) that I can now understand why it is important to (and embraced by) many religions.

Had quite a nice week - only one fast day, but it went well. Great parkrun on Saturday, and enjoyed my Sunday 10k run this morning. I always weigh myself after that - it's a consistent point to compare from week to week. And I was down to 133 pounds this week, which I'm more than happy with!
