Squat question

Ok, I have a question. Or two.
My options for lifting are the high school weight room or a new gym in town. The issue with the high school weight room is that I can only go there on days my husband can go with me. He works there, I don't, so he can't just give me his key. The new gym only has a smith machine. No real squat rack and no bars.
How do I do squats if I join the gym? Can I use dumbells?

Next question...How do I deadlift?
It's so confusing to me that a gym wouldn't have this stuff!0 -
Deadlift with dumbbells. Place the dumbbells at your feet. Did you read the book?0

Be careful about lowering the DBs too low- it's a slightly different exercise, but effective.0
