A Thanksgiving (or other feast) challenge

I propose that instead of getting on MFP and complaining about how stupidly we ate when celebrating with our friends and families we instead comment about what good choice we made at the table.

For instance, "Instead of sweet potatoes with brown sugar, butter, pineapple and a mound of marshmallows I had half of a baked sweet potato with cinnamon, butter and 6 tiny marshmallows baked all golden brown."

Or my friend called to say, "Let's go get some coffee and a doughnut, and I asked if we could go for a hike instead. We had a great time and I splurged on an apple."

I didn't do these things.. YET but I am preparing myself for the holiday season and I thought it might do us all good to concentrate on what we ARE doing right, instead of those lapses in judgement that we may make.

Who's in???

    well today that apple turnover was so calling me - and I said that's it - I'm just going to have it... and then while still waiting at the cash I was able to talk myself out of it - the apple turnover is not going to help me reach my goal - and I didn't have it!!!

    I like it! I will get started right now! I have PMS and have been struggling with cravings, but passed up all of the junk at the grocery store last night! I got seaweed snacks and a stevia-sweetened dark chocolate.

    tonight, I was stuck in the mall, because I got such a late start.. no real lunch and it was 4:00.. spotted a GNC store, and bought a bag of quest chips (yuck.. don't bother) and a quest bar ... beats the heck out of Cinnabon and Wentzel's pretzels that were calling me

    IDK the nutrition on that but I am sure it was a better choice! GOOD FOR YOU!

    I wanted so badly to tear into the choc chip pancakes I made for the kids yesterday. They smelled so good. But I just sipped my coffee and moved on with my day.

    I went on my walk today, and it was too cold.. so i came home. Checked my Fitbit, and when it didn't say that I met my goal, got my coat on and went to the gym.. because that's what I do.. :smiley:

    Yesterday was a coworkers birthday. She brought in bagels and cream cheese (which to me, when they're from a bagel store are better than donuts). I did not have any and completely forgot about them until this post. If I would have ate it, I'm sure it would have been on my mind all day feeling guilty.

    My sons loved my potato (real potatoes) salad. Well I am going to make them some for Thanksgiving but I am going to also make some cauliflower non potato salad for myself. I am going to encourage my sons to try it. Much better for us all. Baby steps are good!

    I'm the only lowcarber in my house. I have 4 kids. But we cook Keto and make them a carb side. They do have sweet limits (they get 3 sweet-tickets per week), but I do end up making cakes and cookies occasionally. The oldest one just had a b-day and another has one next week. I've been doing this 5 months and thankfully by now, it's no big deal.

    I think it helps that I've been cooking for my carby-family the whole time. I'm just so desensitized to all the stuff I used to go nuts on.

    We're being lame and going to a buffet (none of us feels like cooking). My plan is: turkey, crab legs, a salad the size of my head, more crab legs, and a tiny dollop of sweet potatoes. Oh. And wine. And more crab legs.

    And I'm starting the day with a run.

    My husband has super high-carb, sugary sweets every night. Last night he ate brownies topped with caramel ice cream. I didn't have any and I never do. He ate that and I had salami, sliced roast beef, olives, and cheddar cheese. Mine snack was super yummy!

    And to be honest, sugary foods made from grains actually make me feel horrible these days.

    i WAS in, until i was standing in front of the desserts buffet...at the inlaws, and my hubs threatened me with bodily harm if i didnt indulge. jk. i did totally blunder, however. major league. i did wake up today, though. im still alive. all that sugar and carbs wasnt lethal. although, who knew that a person could have a hangover from carbs? well, im here to testify..the struggle is real.

    new day!! new chance to not eat all the sugars on the planet! :)

    Lindt chocolate bars were 50cents each. The kids wanted some. I LOVE Lindt chocolate. So I worked it into my day and had 3 squares instead of the whole bar.

    I was pristinely keto yesterday. And the pie I made mocked me all day and is still mocking me from the basement. It needs to shut up.

    oh I hate those mocking pies... I haven't even made one and I hear it calling me.. I do love pie..

    Here is the thing....

    The good choice I made is that I made the choice to eat what was offered. I took a day off but I made the choice and the food didn't make it for me. I agreed with my SO that she could cook what ever she wanted. I would eat what she cooked and I don't see it as getting back on the bandwagon or having a day off. I know what I did yesterday (over 200 carbs) is not where I want to be but I also know that I really have no more temptation at this point to go back to my old lifestyle. Woke up this morning into my old routine (that I have had for months now) coconut oil and coffee. Made a slice of pie for the kids and wiped the knife with paper towel. going on about my day. Today is my normal. Yesterday was not my normal and this is very important for me to understand.

    What I love the most about keto is that it has taught me to be in control. Eventually, I think around month 2 or 3 it dawns on you that you can feed your body almost whenever and whatever you want without causing harm as long as you stick to your macros. I have gone on trips for work where I simply didn't eat for 24 hours because nothing right for me was available... my body fully cooperated. I have gone to social events where I stuffed my face with grilled fatty meats and no one could believe I was dieting ... again my body was happy. but each time the choice was mine. and that is a very cool.

    sorry for the rambling but I am off of work sipping on some good coffee and being reflective today :-)

    Our first "keto" T-day was remarkable for its' sameness.
    Had to be postponed to Friday due to road conditions (snowstorm) which is pretty much "standard fare" around here (Thanksgiving "eve" storms something like 11 out of the last 13 years - yuck!).
    My Mom, in-laws in attendance, only our Son "missing" (geographically challenged).

    The "fare" was traditional with only "minor" modifications.

    Have always had to make 2 varieties of stuffing (MIL diverticulitis) so no sausage + "normal" bread crumbs, bacon, vegs.
    Sausage with almond flour breadcrumbs for us (taste was awesome, consistency needs a little work).
    Baked stuffed white and sweet potatoes.
    Bacon wrapped scallops appetizer.
    Brussels sprouts in cream and cheese sauce (major "hit")
    Giblet gravy (no flour)
    Big bird injected with butter, coconut oil, wine and slow roasted (14 hrs)
    Apple, pumpkin pie with homemade ice cream.

    FL & I skipped the potatoes and "normal" stuffing the others tried some of each (except MIL).
    I don't "do" deserts (never did) but we each had a touch of ice cream. (just to be "polite"<g>.
    FL skipped the pie (wonder of wonders for the Queen of Sweets (in a previous life).
    She did, however, cut off a "tiny piece" to save for breakfast before sending the rest home with grandparents.

    So, all in all, virtually no "extra" work in prep and everyone was able to both select what "worked" for them and with the exception of no garlic mashed (white) potatoes (won't do that again, thought FIL would cry) hit all the bases for "tradition".

    Screwed the pooch a little on macros - too little fat, too much protein (scallops + turkey), and even with no b-fast/lunch (too busy, not hungry) overshot cals somewhat. Diary looks "ok" but didn't count the "taste testing" so it's clearly understated on that score.

    Tomorrow's another day and the 6 quarts of turkey broth are calling my name!

    Dad.. you guys rock.. I did have a little pumpkin roll up.. but my sweet heart cut the sugar in half for me.. :) but tomorrow.. straight and narrow (with a slight headache, I suspect)

    Ok so the guy that said crab legs. OMG. Just OMG. Yum Yum I could eat mine and your weight in them. Ok rant over....
    This was the very first ever Thanksgiving that I got to cook the entire thing (including a raw turkey, I've always bought smoked) for just me and my girls. Soooo turkey, and my 7 yr old made wait for it wait for it....instant potatoes and gravy from a jar....green bean casserole (consisting of green beans, two cans of mushroom soup and fried onions) biscuits from a can, and then a apple pie. We had sparkling grape juice in fancy wine goblets....I have ZERO regrets. That experience was awesome, the girls helped with the whole thing. They were so proud to help! Not to mention enough turkey left overs to last for a while!
    Maybe next year we can make adjustments.
