What is happening to them and is there anything I can do about it? Wow. I have really thin, weak nails in the first place, but they are shot. Clipped all the way back, and still peeling and cracking. Not a big deal. I'm not a hand model or anything, but sheesh. Is this a "tell" that I'm in the water a lot?

It didn't really bother me that my nails were breaking because of how much better I've felt since I started swimming again.

My hands chap and crack in the winter so I rub lanolin on them everyday, it's seemed to help my nails too. They are still weaker than before I started back swimming but they seem to be breaking less often than they did this summer/fall. I don't know if it would be worth getting lanolin just for your nails but it may help you too.

I could imagine chlorine can damage them some over time. I have some nails that split or peel a lot. Usually my thumbs.

Flaky, weak fingernails can be a symptom of calcium, magnesium or zinc defiency. Also, may be due to lack of moisture.
