Well it's Sunday....time for a new thread :)

A week and a half until Christmas... Most have lots of things going on and lots of parties to go to. Don't be to hard on yourself! If you can get in two fasts and maintain your weight during the next few weeks, that's a win. Most people gain during the holiday season. The fasts will help level out the up days.

I will continue 16:8 during the next week and two fasts should be possible. No late nights planned, so I'm hoping, my fasts go better than last week. :p

I sold my bed sofa and it just got picked up. The fitness mat tiles arrived this week, so one of my next projects is to turn part of my spare bedroom into a little fitness corner - trampoline, yoga mat, dumbbells and YouTube...and I'm going to save the money for my gym membership! I've been working out at home or outdoors this year, so I really haven't been to the gym in a loooong time.

Thank you for the encouraging words about being kind to ourselves during the upcoming festivities. Your fitness corner looks great and if you are doing the Shred you should have no worries about giving up the gym! Like you said, I am happy to 'level out my up days' with some fasts when my schedule permits. Best wishes to all!

Yeah, I really like the shred and seeing how effective 30min per day can be (not even everyday) in comparison with 2x 1.5h at the gym got me hooked on training at home with videos from YouTube. Just did level one today and then opened a random video for the rebounder. That was pretty good too.

My corner has been baptized with drops of sweat rolling down my face.... I'm :) . Off to shower and then I'm cooking myself something healthy and yummy for dinner!

Nice area! That will make it easy to stay fit!

Now if it were me, I would have to put the computer away before I started on the mini-trampoline, if I wanted to have a computer to work on when I was done. Or maybe you want to post to our group as your exercising?

If you zoom in on that screen...you will see Jillian Michaels telling me what to do ;-) All of my exercise videos are from YouTube. I did however close Facebook, email, MFP, etc ;)

  • Hi all, a new week has once again begun.

I really seem to have lost all motivation, I don't know why because I had started to lose the weight! I guess it's down to feeling a bit stressed about a few different things and with Christmas coming up I have so much to sort out with getting back to the UK and arranging to see friends and family - not wanting to upset whoever I don't end up spending Christmas with etc!
Things are a bit touch and go here in Spain for myself and my partner, we don't know yet whether we can stay out here, the next couple of months will be the test to see if the business is worthwhile. Guess I'm just a bit stressed with everything up in the air!

Was meant to do a fast today but I caved at about 3pm and had a sandwich. I will try to summon the energy to make myself fast tomorrow - any kind words of encouragement or experiences of how you have dealt with the lows in your life would be very much appreciated!

Hey Jo...I think we are all facing the holiday stress. Had my practice exam today...it went ok except now they want me to write a whole new chapter :s

    I'm never going to finish

Anyway the way to cope through the stress...have a good listen to "it's all about the bass, no treble...every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top!" And just never give up, even when we stumble.

Thanks Snaps, yeah I guess it can be a stressful time of year - I do love Christmas though! It's just a mixture of a few things that can become too much!

What is your PhD in? I used to work with PhD students in the UK at Leeds University. I know how stressful it can be but keep that end goal in sight and you'll get there. My friend had his Viva yesterday and I've had a few go through them in the past couple of years. I turned down a PhD as I couldn't imagine going through all of that ha! I think the thing you have to keep in mind is: It's your work, no one knows your work better than you so you can do it!
I know there are specialists involving in the questioning of your work but they want you to pass and although the subject you're doing maybe their speciality, it is now yours too. All the best with it

Hey thanks! My PhD is on ethics of digital manipulation in newspapers from the view of the photojournalists themselves. I've studied photography all through university (art, design and visual communication) but now I'm in applied social science because I discussing ethics. Sorry probably more than you wanted to know. I have been at this PhD since 2009 (5 years...oh so long). I enjoy the topic but I just get tired sometimes. But just like 5:2 I will keep chugging along!

Keep chuggin'! I think, that actually sounds very interesting, Snaps!

Jo - we all have weeks like that! And you have quite a bit going on in your head and on the outside, so be nice to yourself.

    I don't own any fitness dvds ;-)
Mostly I just do Jillian Michael's 30 Day shred. I'm on level 1 again atm.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEz0VGxsiqc

Have done her Yoga meltdown a couple of times (more strength / less yoga aspekt, but good)
and her kickboxing workout (I prefer the circuits from the shred).

My sister likes the 6week-6pack one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ8Zdj0OPMI
I like Jillian's stuff, because she her comments help me keep my eye on my form to avoid injuries. And she often shows options for beginners. Lots of her stuff is on youtube.

You find lots of fitness blender stuff on youtube too. Just target an area you want to work and use the youtube search engine.

Right now I'm trying different workouts for my rebounder. Today's was intense but a bit boring....same exercise for 2min, 10exercises.

    super cool gym @flumi!

I'm with you guys on feeling distracted/disinterested and I'm totally blaming it on the holidays! Still got my fast and workout in today, but it's been tough!

I'm going to tell myself this everyday - "Don't let yourself fall back into old habits....stay the course!" I'm seeing results on 5:2 and I'm not going to let my 4 weeks of fasting fall to the way side becuase I'm too eaisly tempted by a cupcake (or cheesecake, or whatever!).

I'm less than 5lbs away from buying new undergarments (a reward I promised myself quite some time ago...just haven't reached it yet).

Wow, very impressive! And I bet interesting (if you didn't have to think about it everyday for 5 years ). Thanks to Photoshop it is hard to know what is real in a picture and what is not. I think it would be quite interesting to look at the ethics of that. Is it ok to remove a blemish? Is it ok to remove incriminating or embarrassing images from a photo? Is it ok to add things to a photo? I imagine the ethics for photojournalism is a deep topic to draw from.

Was going to try and do a fat day today..., but nope...eating toast and tea for breakfast so no fast today. I am going to try my best to fit one in before Friday!

And flumi I am going to check out though links, Thanks!
  • Yes, we do all have down days don't we - I love this group, so great to have the support.

Snaps - that does sound like an interesting topic, and very different from the pig/chicken nutrition work I was seeing every day! 5 years is a looooong time but it will all be over soon and worth the hard work! A friend of mine did it part time over 7 years - I don't know how you guys do it!!!

Maphammonds - thanks, I will use those words to recite to myself! Only 5lbs before new undercrackers? Brill! That can be a new year present to yourself, a new year, a new you and all that!

Well, I'm doing a fast today and I'm going to make myself bloody well do it! It's 12:20pm here and I will carry on through until around 6 or 7pm... maybe even 8ish so I can eat with my lovely man when he gets back from work.
You know people say you should do one thing every day that scares you? Well I decided to get on the weigh scales this morning, just so I knew how bad the damage was from not doing any fasts last week. I couldn't believe it - I weighed the same as on the 5/12/14 - 164.2lbs! This was the best news I could have got as it has given me that push to get back on the 5:2 and get serious. I thought I would have been around 168lbs.... lets hope my scales aren't wrong - but even if they are, my brain has been tricked ha!

I fly back next Sunday to England and my aim is to shed a little bit more this week just so that I can enjoy Christmas without feeling too guilty. I have decided thought that I won't be going too crazy with food and booze over the festive couple of weeks but I'll allow myself treats. I do tend to be a bit boozy with family over Christmas so that will be my downfall!

How is everyone getting on this week? Any other Tuesday fasters?

Calahonda: It looks like I'm doing my fast day today. Great job on staying the same weight for the week. I didn't end up doing it yesterday like I usually do. So this week I'm doing it on Tues. and Thurs. This Friday my niece is coming over to make some Christmas cookies. So I know I won't be fasting on that day so I will try to do it on Sat. and one on Tues. next week before Christmas eve.

My daughter fasted today and commented that she thinks it must get easier to fast after a few times. I would agree with that. You realise that it isn't that big a deal, you won't suffer and your body seems to get used to less food.
  • flumi_f
    flumi_f Posts: 1,888 Member
Also fasting today. Won't be diving into the cookies today. After I fell (actually flew) off my horse as he spooked downhill and turned on his hocks...I got back on as best I could (thank you universe, that I fell near a bench) and rode home very slowly...walking wasn't an option. Went to the doc's, because I wasn't sure if I had just smacked my thigh REALLY hard or if something was broken.

Glad to know nothing is broken, but I will have trouble walking the stairs to the basement...and that's where I keep those cookies. Guess that's the upside ;-)

Oh and on a lighter note - my own GP didn't recognize me right away tonight...flattend hair and another 10kg lighter then last fall, when I went to see him. And he's known me for 27yrs :p I love doing that to people!

Flumi, that is great about the doctor!
Does anyone else have this problem? I ate a sandwich last night and correctly predicted that my weight would be way up this morning. Bloated, and I suppose, carrying fluid. Maybe just carbs or maybe gluten intolerance. Either way it will pass but obviously bread is not really the thing for me to eat.

KCD - love that gym, but no oceans in Switzerland....

Uptight - I get gas, bloat, water retention from grain carbs. Might be a slight intolerance. I don't avoid them completely (because I like them...) but I have reduced them. White bread, pasta, pizza are the 'worst' for me.
  • uptightoutasight
    uptightoutasight Posts: 69 Member
Thanks, Flumi. That is what I am doing. Reducing but not giving up completely.

Uptight - I also make sure my potassium intake is higher than my sodium. Potatos are high in potassium and they don't cause any of the symptoms, grain carbs do (in my body). Potassium will also help you get rid of retained water, when you do 'enjoy' those simpler carbs. Always good to know, there is an antidote after my weekend ration of carbs ;-)

I also mostly eat bread that is high in seeds, thus high in protein (and cals, because of the healthy fats in the seeds). Several grocery stores and bakeries now offer high protein 20-25% / low carb breads. Some people don't like this type of 'heavy, dark' bread, but I actually prefer it to white or 'just' whole wheat, and my body definitely prefers it.

Im going to join you guys! I recently started 5:2 (last week) and am on my 3rd fasr day today.

I live in Chicago, and am a stay at home mom to 4 kids (ages 6, 5, 3 & 15weeks) I also nanny full time for a 11week old.

I like the ezekial flourless breads. They dont upsety belly like most bread does. Trader joes carries a couple different types (and their own line too).
