Knee pain and general rambling

So, I've turned over a new leaf in my life. I quit smoking (on day 9!) and replaced it with running. I was on my stationary bike for about 1 weeks going 45 min every other day. Then when I had a spare moment to myself I went outside to try jogging. Not easy, but I LOVED it! So, I found the c25k program and decided that is what I would do. And I also found out that there is going to be a Zombie 5k run locally in October so I'm going for that. I am not in shape right now, have not ran since my highschool days 10 years ago.
So, I started doing 20 seconds jogging on and about 1 min walking when I was just going for myself without a plan. I worked through sore shin muscles (not sure if it was actually shin splints or sore shin muscles) and got through it by jogging/walking them off. Now my knees are sore, I tried to start my first day of c25k last night but couldn't do it because my knees were hurting too bad. I went and talked to our locally owned sports store yesterday and bought a better shoe (she said mine didn't have enough support) and apparently it pronate so got the right shoe for that and my flat footedness. Tried to go running after with my spakin new shoes and no go.
So, the are on my knee that is hurting is inner and a butting right up against my knee cap on both knees. I am giving myself off until Monday. What should I do to insure that this heals? Wrap them during the day thought my normal activities? Try to stay off them? I know icing is probably a good idea, and ibuprofen. I'm totatlly new to the whole running and I'm learning. I do run on pavement. Going somewhere else to run is not an option. I have a 3 year old and run when my MIL comes over (every other day) and I can't easily head off somewhere. How do I prevent this from happening again?
I'm guessing the shoes should help but I was also told about running socks. Do these really help? Sorry I am so long winded. I'm just so excited about running! My DH wants to do it with me but he doesn't ever actually go, and all my girlfriends were the kind that flaked on me when they found the men in their lives, so it's just me. My dad is being supportive by "sponsoring" me. He bought me the shoes and is going to get me a few more things I need and is going to pay the Zombie 5k fee. I just need some women to talk to! Thanks for listening!! (Or rather reading)

I don't know about the knee pain, but I just wanted to say that you'll find a lot of,great support here. My hubby is supportive but can't run with me because of joint problems, and none of my friends are doing c25k, so I love the support system here.
I think your new shoes will probably help a lot. I never wore real running shoes till I started this program, and they make a huge difference.0
