Hi, I am new here and was wondering if anyone knows what is spiking my BS. I take my FBS and it will be way lower than before I eat my first meal. (may be a couple hours between tests. I usually take my medicines/supplements .. Vitamin D, One A day, Calcium, Vitamin C, Lisinopril (blood Pressure) and my blood sugar medicine which is glyburide.
I thought maybe it was my coffee I was drinking before taking the second test. (drink it right after taking meds), but yesterday I didn't have the coffee and it still spiked. Today (1/15/14) I had the coffee, but didn't take my supplements or vitamins. Just my BS med, BP meds and Vit. D's.
any help would be appreciated. My food diary is open if you want to take a look.

Hi Kaye,
I took a look at your diary. I like the way you post your test results along with your meals. It makes (or will eventually make) it easier to connect the dots between what you eat and your blood sugars.
Morning blood sugars can be odd. There are some physiological things that happen overnight that can cause your blood sugar to rise toward morning, and coffee can raise blood sugar for at least some people (me included).
One thing you might want to try is having something first thing after waking with your coffee. Maybe a hard boiled egg or a few tablespoons of yogurt. I have found that waiting too long to eat breakfast tends to push my sugar higher, even if my fasting sugar was good.
Looking at your numbers, I'm wondering if you are very recently diagnosed. Your numbers are largely on the high side, even with your medication. You should have a conversation about your numbers with your doctor or a diabetes educator. Ask about what else you can do to bring your blood sugars under control. It took me quite a while to find the right combination of medication, diet, and exercise, and if you have just started, you might have to try a few different things before you hit on what works for you.
Best wishes to you. Feel free to add me if you would like to see my diary. Maybe I'll follow your example and start noting down my blood sugars and meds in my diary too so we can compare.

I am not newly diagnosed, just fell off the wagon since July, now back on track and getting my BS where it should be.
FBS 128, then took my three meds, BP, BS, and Vitamin D, then 1 hr after was 154, then 2 hrs after was 177. I doubt not eating for 2 hrs after getting up would raise my BS from 128 to 177.. But with diabetes who knows. I will try to eat first thing getting up and wait to take my meds and see what happens that way.0 -
Kudos to you for getting back on the wagon! I've fallen off it a few times myself. Some days I wake up and feel like I just don't want to take care of the beast, but it never goes away.
I agree diabetes is an odd thing. Sometimes there's just no obvious explanation for a spike.

Are you feelling sick at all? Are there any carbohydrates in any component of any of the meds you are taking ... like in the filler for a tab or in the gel on gel caps? Do you use fruit juice when you take your pills? Have you checked with the pharmacist about which meds and supliments are ok to take together, or when?
I only take vitamin D and calcium supliments when I am eating food that contains some calcium ... like if I made oatmeal using milk, of if I have a sandwich and milk, or a yogurt.
I chose to take my blood pressure pills before going to bed instead of in the morning because I found it was better for me.
I take metformin for my blood sugar and take that with my meal. Don't know about the dosing instructions for what you take.
A continued spike like you are describing would warrant a talk with your doctor or diabetes professional.0 -
NK these are meds I have taken for a long time. One is my blood sugar medicin=glyburide, then blood pressure med-lisinopril, then per DR orders, vitamin D soft gels. That is all I took when I was testing my meds. no food, nothing but water to drink my meds down with. my diary is open if you want to take a look. I am not sure what is doing it. I am not going to stress over it too much more, for we all know.. stress = higher blood sugar numbers. LOL (I only drink water, some times a v8)
And no, I am not sick, do not feel like I am getting sick either. Feel fine.0 -

I had to look up Glyburide and now i know why I don't take it ... I'm allergic to it's major component.
While reading up on it I spotted a comment that says to take it with a meal. Maybe you need to contact your doc about it.0 -
Nk I usually take it with my breakfast, for that one day though, I just took the meds and tested 1 hr after and 2 hrs after to see if the meds indeed were raising my sugar.0
