Is this normal?

I had the gastric sleeve this past May and have lost 110 pounds. I still find that after eating I need to lay down because I feel so sick. I probably throw up at least once a day. I chew my food VERY well and eat tiny portions. On an average day I'm eating between 500-700 calories. My stomach cannot tolerate lettuce at all (I REALLY miss eating salads!) I'm too scared to try a lot of food so I stick to mostly oranges, nuts and yogurt. Sadly it seems that I do best with junk food like chips because the dry crunchy texture doesn't bother my stomach at all. I'm no where near to where I should be for getting my protein.
Does it ever get better? Will I ever feel normal again?

FANTASTIC PROGRESS, CONGRATULATIONS. IT WELL GET BETTER BUT YOUR NORMAL HAS CHANGED. YOU WILL EAT WELL AND ENJOY FOODS THAT WORK FOR YOU PERSONALLY. OVER TIME YOU WILL DISCOVER WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU.
I'M ALMOST SIX YEARS POST OP FROM RNY AND I STILL PERIODICALLY HAVE DIFFICULTIES. MOST FRIENDS IRL WHO HAVE HAD A VARIETY OF WLS PROCEDURES CAN NO LONGER TOLERATE SOME FOODS OR HAVE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN TASTE EVEN FIVE PLUS YEARS POST OP.
MOST IMPORTANT: KEEP CURRENT WITH YOUR FOLLOW UP VISITS; EXPLAIN EVERYTHING YOU EXPERIENCE TO YOUR SURGEON; INSIST COMPLAINTS ARE CHECKED OUT.
STICK WITH YOUR PLAN AND GET YOUR PROTEIN IN FIRST BEFORE FILLING UP ON OTHER FOODS. SINCE DRY BREAD LIKE TEXTURES WORK FOR YOU I SUGGEST ONE OF THE MANY VERSIONS OF THE "MINUTE MUFFIN" ONLINE. TRY LOWCARBFRIENDS.COM OR SEARCH OTHER LOW CARB SITES. THERE ARE VARIATIONS EVERYWHERE. ITS MADE WITH FLAX AND AN EGG PLUS YOU CAN ADD A LITTLE WHEY OR SOY PROTEIN POWDER (EGG WHITE PROTEIN MAKES IT TOUGH) TO BOOST THE NUTRITION. SLICE AND TOAST IT CRISP.
YOU NEED TO KEEP EXPERIMENTING WITH NUTRITIOUS PROTEIN FOODS. LOW CARB SITES; A GOOD BLOG POSTED BY SOMEONE CALLED EGGFACE (JUST SEARCH ON THIS TERM); AND KETOGENIC DIET SITES THOUGH NOT RELATED TO WLS OFTEN HAVE GOOD RECIPIES.
GIVE UP THE CHIPS ETC AND FIND PROTEIN BASED FOODS THAT GO DOWN MORE EASILY. EVEN SALTY PORK RINDS BEAT SALTY POTATO CHIPS IN MY OPINION.
YOU CAN EAT BETTER WITHOUT MUCH BOTHER. IF YOU WANT I'LL SEND YOU MY MINUTE MUFFIN VARIATION. I MAY BE SLOW RESPONDING BECAUSE I ONLY GET TO THE FULL SITE ON OCCASION AND THE APP IS LIMITED ON MY DEVICES BUT I WILL REPLY.
CHANGE IS HARD BUT THE BODY WILL ADAPT. SALADS MAY NOT WORK BUT COOKED SAUTE'D LEAFY GREENS JUST MIGHT. KEEP UNFLAVORED PROTEIN POWDER AROUND. ITS NOT JUST FOR SHAKES. I ADD IT TO COOKING AND AS A FLOUR SUBSTITUTE IN SOME RECIPES.
YOU CAN GET YOUR PROTEIN AND ENJOY FOOD AGAIN TOO. IT TAKES A LITTLE CREATIVITY.
I'M NOT YELLING AT YOU... I'M A LITTLE HARD OF SEEING0 -
wow! I must have a sleeve of steel! I had my lapband removed and revised to the sleeve last January 2014. I can eat anything and everything, in smaller amounts. I have no problems with salads, breads, meats, or anything! The only thing that gives me problems are bananas. I can't eat one first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, I get nausea and throw up. I find if I have some thing that is really sugary or really fatty, I get a stomach ache, kinda like a sour stomach. I take pepto bismol or my husbands nexium it goes away. Throwing up is not normal. You didn't throw up everyday before you had WLS and you shouldn't be now. I've only thrown up twice, maybe 3 times in the past year. If that continues, I'd talk to you Dr and let them know what is going on. I eat about 1200-1700 calories a day and work out about 3-4 times a week. You'd think the weight would be falling off but I've only lost about 20lbs in the last year and lost about 20 inches. I'm going to try and keep my calories to about 1700 and not go lower than 1500 and see if that helps. I've been on a major weight loss plateau since about July 2014. I keep losing and gaining the same 3-4lbs! FRUSTRATING!!!!
Find ways to up your protein and calories. Your body can't maintain a low calorie count that long. Milk, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, tuna, greek yogurt all high in protein. I agree with the other person, give up the chips. There are no added nutritional value in chips or the likes. Start slow and see how everything sits before eating anymore. Eat your meals slowly too. That will help too. Also make sure you keep hydrated. Drink water!!
Good Luck. It will get easier but you need to go slow and listen to your body. Once you are satisfied, stop. don't eat anymore. Don't get to that full feeling. That means you ate too much!
Stick with it! You'll get there!0 -
I am 3.5 years out now and yes, it does get better. Once I learned my full cue, I stopped being sick and feeling bad after a meal. I would strongly suggest thinned out protein shakes and Isopure Zero (protein water, counts for both) so you can start getting in your protein. And try really hard to get your water in as well. Slider foods like crackers and chips are easier because they really liquify as you chew them, but they aren't giving you the nutrition you need. Like we said, it does get better so hang in there. And frankly nuts are hard to digest, so I'm surprised you can eat those!0

Great progress! IMHO if you're 9 months out and still feel sick every time you eat no matter what you eat, something is wrong. Either the portion is too big or too dry (for meats, or you're eating too fast.
For me, (I have a 90% sleeve, 1.5 yr out), I can eat no more than 4 oz of roasted meat, 1/2 cup of chili, a serving of crackers, but never all in the same sitting. I love tortillia chips with my chili but I will throw up if I eat more than about 5 Tostitos with that 1/2 cup of chilli or if I eat too fast.
And there is no excuse for not getting your protein!!! This is part of your life long aftercare and you will feel like crap if you're not getting it! Drink it if you must, (there are clear alternatives out there if the volume and texture of the milky variety gross you out. Or choose a bar, (there are crunchy varieries out there that taste like cookies!
If it's none of those things, you should get checked by a Dr. You may have a medical condition.0
