Hey there! I'm Karen and going to do this amazing 5:2 diet thingie.
I give my dog a hungry day each week and inadvertently give myself one as well lol so adding an extra one should be relatively do able. Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated

Welcome, Karen, and well done for choosing 5:2. As long as you don't fib to yourself it works. Without a doubt.
In the beginning just stick to the basics - 2 days on a quarter of your calories (most people work on 500cals, but I'm not very active so I tend to go with 200-300.) The only people I know (not on here, in real life!) who have been unsuccessful on 5:2 or the ones who go mad on their non-fast days and eat far more than normal, so keep an eye on yourself for that and use mfp to track those non-fast days too to start off with.
But most of all, enjoy it! You will find that lots of us on this board really enjoy our fast days - I love the freedom 5:2 gives me. I no longer obsess over food/calories because I don't need to!0 -
Hi Karen, welcome aboard. I would second what JJA said above, particulaly about overcompensating on non-fast days. On fast days, I find it suits me best to save my calories for the evening meal, but others prefer to have 2 or even 3 small meals - you need to find what works for you. I've just told my dogs about you giving yours a hungry day each week, and they were NOT impressed We are all very friendly and have varying degrees of experience, so please feel free to ask any questions and I'm sure someone will know the answer. Good luck!0

Think my dog would leave home if given a FD. He starts getting excited about supper mid morning, which is why we're so well suited. Hiya Karen and welcome aboard! As JJA says, fast days are not the torture you may think and are actually quite liberating. I hold out for supper too and have an enormous bowl of homemade soup. You may find that the scales will do weirdy up and downs, so I record once a week on a Friday morning.0

Welcome. Keep it simple is my advice. I eat pretty much the same as the rest of my family I just eat way less on fast days.
Water IS the answer on fast days.
Hungry-water
Headache-water
Tired-water
When in doubt-water0 -
Thanks guys!!! You are all so welcoming and helpful!!
Tomorrow is my first fast day
I'm pretty confident in can do it as I'll be working at double shift. We don't get time to eat anyway lol.
Water is my go to drink for everything and knowing that I can drink it whenever I like is a great thing...

Today (Monday) will be my first fast for the week. I'm thinking I'll be doing my fast days on my busiest work days. As usually I'm too busy to eat anyway lol
However I'm not sure if my fast days should be the same day each week...0 -

Doesn't matter in the slighest long term - fit your fast days into your lifestyle.
The flexibility is what makes 5:2 sustainable.
It you have a weekly weigh in day and it follows a fast one week but not the next you may get a "false reading" but apart from that moving fast days around makes adherence easier.0 -
Totally agree - I switch days around depending on my busy work days, although sometimes its hard to decide which are the busy days!
Today I worked 8 til 5 and didn't eat at all...then I'm back out at 7:30pm for a mtg til 9pm which keeps me from munching. so fd today is a doddle!0 -
Fast day yesterday was easy as. Hello double shifts. 6am till 10pm no time to eat.
Today I'm trying to actually remember to eat as it's another hectic day.
I think I'm in love with this lifestyle0 -
That's great news, Karen. Just keep up the momentum and the positivity.0

The busier I am, the easier it is.
Great job Karen!0
