No, there wasn't a mention of it becoming a common thing. The morning one didn't quite go as he planned since he needed more people to partner up, but it was interesting and good to get a personal form check.
It is pretty weird we go to the same gym. One of these days, you might even know what I look like.0 -
I am imagining @DawnEmbers and @threnjen seeing each other doing the workout but not knowing each other and being secretly impressed by another fellow female lifter!0
-
I seriously have to read through DawnEmber's posts in the "so there was this guy at the gym" thread and make sure she was never talking about me lol
I kid though, I never do anything noteworthy.
Dawn if you see me you can say hi, I am nice and not weird or anything. I guess I look like my profile picture except.. not in a pinup dress and not in red lipstick ... But I'm 5'1", with chin length red hair, and my name is Jenny0 -
i constantly picture you lifting in that dress, just so you know. it's so memorable0
-
Bahaha
If it didn't make me look totally cray-cray I would run with that idea and go to the gym in the dress and have someone take a picture of me doing an OHP in it or something0 -
I'll try to remember that, though I mostly lift at 11 pm.
Though don't worry, think the only female ones I've mentioned are like the super whiney, types or the ones being shown lifts but aren't that into it. Mostly the noticeable ones for that thread are the bros. Though some day I want to see my boss actually working out. I ran into him at the gym once so far but it was at the entrance and I was there for a workshop. We talked work for a moment but I didn't actually see any of what he does there. One of these days...
And that sounds like a fun photo op (may work in photo department, hehe).0 -
In one of his circuit, my husband is doing renegade rows with dumbells. He can do them, but he complains about the fact that it puts a lot of pressure on his palm, and he have grip trouble because of that. He tried to do them with kettlebells, but it was worse, and he tried with padded lifting gloves, and he didn't help either.
I suggested that he switch to bent over rows, but for the most part, he will lose all the core work that made the renegade row so effective.
Do you have any idea of an other exercise he can do that can replace the renegade rows, both for the triceps and the core muscles?0 -
My power rack arrived yesterday! And the box is STILL sitting in the garrage!!0
-
@Daiva -- Why will he lose the core work if he goes to rows?0
-
So I have another personal training session scheduled for 3/16. I received a "free" one from my gym after being a member for 6 months. When I originally got the email I was SO STOKED to work with one of the guys that I have seen showing their clients stuff in the squat rack.
BUT, since this dang back thing, my session will be a bit different. They set me up with a lady who is licensed in training injuries. I received an email confirmation with the standard gibberish that they will take my measurements, talk about diet/goals etc, perform 4 "tests" to see my mobility, yada yada. I am crossing my fingers that we can also go onto form of the 5 SL lifts so that I can get her opinion/feedback.
Will keep ya'll posted!0 -
@Daiva -- Why will he lose the core work if he goes to rows?
Well, the renegade rows are done in plank position and he have to support himself on one hand when he is lifting a dumbell. I am assuming that this position engage all the core muscles we normally use in plank or push up (thighs, abs, back, etc.). If he switch to bent over rows with dumbell, he will lose a lot of abs/back work (well I think), and I think that this circuit was especially designed to work abs.
Maybe he could just do bent over rows and then plank, that would be a nice way to work the same muscle groups.
I don't know really, that's why I was looking for suggestions.0 -
I do renegade rows sometimes, and they do hurt my palms. I just try to adjust my hands as best I can, and rest between sets.
Beyond that, maybe he could wrap a towel around the dumbbells to give them padding?0 -
I wondered because my core and back are definitely engaged when I do my Pendlay rows, especially once I fixed my form so my back is parallel with the ground. They might not be as intense as a plank or a renegade row, but I think they're still working those areas.0

The bar arrived last week, new power rack is up AND tonight the plates! I will be ALL set for tomorrow's workout! Feels like a kid at xmas!
...now if i can just get the weight calculator to work with me, since my brain won't..0 -
@symba1130 I'm sorry about your back but seems you'll be good to go soon enough. I put it on my wall and in the check in but I just hurt my back yesterday. I think I strained a muscle. It's starting to feel slightly better so I'm hoping it's healed up soon. I had a huge pity party yesterday while laying on my kitchen floor in the fetal position so now that I've gotten that out of my system, I'm ready to allow myself to heal. The iron will be there when I'm ready.
@threnjen and @DawnEmbers it's so crazy you guys live in the same area! Workout buddies!!0 -
@giusa that is seriously exciting. Hope it goes well!
@MissHolidayGolightly sorry to hear about your back
Next week is so wow that my anxiety is currently through the roof. Getting through this week is going to be hard because I am completely preoccupied with how much next week is.
Monday I take pictures for the day home and working from home so I can do that. It is the first time I will take pictures for someone else (I am just calling these ones a gift, if she wants more regular ones I might start charging her but for now it is just a great experience for me).
Tuesday and Wednesday I am at a industry conference. On Wednesday I give one of the presentations for said conference. Never done one of these and I am pretty uptight about public speaking and the public in general.
Thursday is the only day I am in the office and I have a bunch of very detailed documentation to have completed for the Friday and I am already dreading it (who wants to go through a 15 tab spreadsheet and document EVERY SINGLE CELL, not I!!!!)
Friday I don't work because we are leaving the kids with the grandparents and going for our belated mini honeymoon to the mountains. I really want to be excited for this but my anxiety over everything else is just making me a little cray cray.
Now if only I could focus on this week and get prepped for next week.0 -

Sounds like a crazy hectic week! Just know you can vent here :-)

Still not much here. I have been working 6 or 7 days a week. Work is a bit odd because the work week is thursday-wednesday, and pay day is on thursday every other week. So, for this week my one day off was thursday (as in this last thursday). Next week, my one day off is friday (coming up in a few days). I usually work photo but this week I have 3 cashier days, which is kinda blech. I'll be having 2 a week in the future but prefer just 1 a week, or whatever is as little as possible while still getting enough hours.
Grandparents are asking if I can go to a tulip festival in Washington in April. Will have to check work and see. I don't see them often as they live in Utah. But we never have enough people so it's not easy taking time off because I actually work quite a lot even if I don't make enough money yet. Working on moving up but it's a very slow process.0 -
So I just got to the gym at 12:51 am and the cage is in use. What do I have to do to actually get the cage? Wtf (and there are only 6 people here, I counted )0
-
That is crazy. Was the rack in use too? Sometimes when I go at night it will be in use but they don't take forever, so I haven't had to wait much, unlike during day where you have to wait and be nearby in order to get it next.0
-
No, but I can't use the rack, I hit the safeties It's cage or nothin
I asked how many sets he had left and he said 2... I went and did my bench and accessories and came back and he was STILL using it >.<
I just wandered around for a while and tried not to hover, sigh0 -
Ah, that sucks. I've only hit the safeties on the rack once and that was with front squat. Sometimes i'll sit and use the leg machines in the area when I wait so I'm close enough but at least doing something besides hovering.0
-
I don't how to use any of the machines or I would do that. I've thought about it but decided I would look way too stupid even trying. I have no idea how they work lol
We are both super short, that is interesting you don't hit the rack safeties. I am thinking back to when I tried it and maybe I just did something stupid and it would be fine. After all these months I am afraid of it since the one time I tried I hit them. I must squat deeper than average maybe0 -
I can get parallel but don't go super low, at least not on back squats. With the leg ones, I just use some of the easy ones, like the sit with the bar over my feet and lift up with legs. I'm not really going heavy or anything on them, more just something to do while I wait. Or I do leg press when it's available cause I like it. They also have pictures to help show how they work.
I like the rack more for front squat because one of the settings is just low enough for where I need on that and OHP. The power cage I end up with the bar resting just a little too high for me on those but to put it lower is difficult because of how the thing is built as there is a part of metal in the way for the pins.0 -
i got this weird interaction while doing ohp today that isn't entertaining enough for the guy-in-gym thread, but it's still left a flavour with me. i was doing my thing, and this great big huge young guy comes along and asks how many sets i have left. i offered to let him work in with his squatting and he went along with it, eventually. and then another guy came along and asked HIM how many sets, and oh sigh.
the thing is, on my way home i figured out what the big guy's vibe was throughout the whole 45 minutes/whatever that we were all taking turns. he expected me to bow out. take note that i was there first, just for one thing. take note too that i was not doing curls. i was doing the overhead press. but i'd bet my kid's kidney on the fact that every little piece of just-slightly-off weirdness about his response and expression patterns was basically him saying 'i'm squatting, you're not, the rack is now morally mine.' because that was what his whole attitude was, only in the so-subtle form that you can't call out and smack upside the head. it was like he was doing ME a [reluctant] favour allowing me to keep doing my presses in between him and his squats. and the squats of the third guy (who had manners, dammit).
prick. just needed to get that off my chest, and now i won't go to bed and waste 30 minutes that i could spend thinking about chocolate and other good things, by fuming.0 -
That would be cumbersome to deal with. I've never actually worked in with anyone except my coworker and we rarely go to the gym together. Even then, we stopped taking turns each set because the height difference is just too much of a pain. Only once has anyone even offered to let me work in with the squat rack and even then it was on the premise that I just needed the bar (cause he was doing lunges with just the bar) but he only had one set left so I waited instead.
For the first time since I joined, I actually saw bumper plates. I was in awe of them at first cause they are big and thin, but only 10 lbs each. They felt so light. Wish we'd had them when I first started learning deadlift cause that would have made it easier. So, I did pendlay rows just to try them out.
Though, fashion wise, I really shouldn't wear the lane bryant workout shirt to the gym if I'm going to do things where I bend over in front of a mirrored wall. It has a nice shape and fits so much better after losing 40 lbs but for things like that type of row, just shows a little too much cleavage, though the guys nearby might not have minded so much. lol0 -
.... were the bumper plates over at the deadlift bar? I forgot and accidentally left them over there last night... BTW those live in the trainer area and you can use them any time, just supposed to put them back, I forgot But apparently they weren't missed.
If I ever do run into you we can work together, I think we are both five feet tall.0 -
Oh. Yeah, did not know those were available. Good to know.
I'm 4'11.5" so yeah, almost 5 feet.0 -
Yesterday I thought I had the great idea of moving my gym from the open area in our bedroom (it's a loft so it's quite a large area all told and the gym is on the other side of the stairs) so that I can workout in the mornings without disturbing my hubby. Now that is on the 2nd level and I also needed to clear out/ clean up/reorg the basement.
Oy vey, way too big of a project on a week night. I gave up about 75 % of the way through getting the plates down the stairs, my grip is just toast. I believe I have everything I need down there for tonight's workout but it is in such a disorganized mess that I don't know if I can actually do it. Might just set my sights on getting it put together and do bench and squat day on Friday together. Hmm we will see how gung ho I am when I get home.0
