See link: Carb-Loaded: A Culture Dying to Eat from Epoch Times

I receive Google alerts for any news related to pre-diabetes & insulin resistance and the following link just appeared. I invite you all to listen/read it and let me know your thoughts. This is day 4 of my attempt to go "low carb" - still trying to figure out how low, where there's hidden sugar, where there is too much fat/cholesterol (Cholesterol is my next unknown - especially with the recent change in recommendations!)

Referencing the article, things don't have too much fat - really, unless they have transfats or you go over the recommended amounts.
"As much high quality healthy fat as you want (saturated and monounsaturated). For optimal health, most people need upwards of 50-85 percent of their daily calories in the form of healthy fats. Good sources include coconut and coconut oil, avocados, butter, nuts, and animal fats. (Remember, fat is high in calories while being small in terms of volume. So when you look at your plate, the largest portion would be vegetables.)"
As for cholesterol, as my doctor explained, when you don't eat enough cholesterol, your body will create it. Food cholesterol has little effect on blood cholesterol. So as long as you are eating your non-trans-fats and getting upward of 5--85% of your daily calories in fat, your cholesterol should go down naturally. Having untreated thyroid issues (which can go hand in hand with low Vit-D, insulin resistance, and diabetes) will also ramp up your numbers. Be sure you're tested for this, too.
So when you drop carbs, you need to significant jump up your fats, and moderate your proteins...0 -
Thanks KnitoMiss! I'm trying to concentrate on eating as little processed food as possible...and not worrying about fats (or the good fats) - concerned that I'm eating too much protein. Working to find the right balance and the MFP comments help a great deal to make sense of this.

Thanks for posting this. My 14 year commitment to STRICTLY LIMIT processed carbs is the reason I joined this group. Thanks!0

One of the things I truly love about this group is the information sharing. Thanks for posting, although I couldn't view the video, I read the article.
What hooked me:
"Conventional advice also states that diabetics can safely use table sugar, as long as you readjust your medications to compensate appropriately (i.e. take more drugs to increase your fat cell storage capacity)."
Oh My Goodness...is there anything more stupid and ill fated than ingesting something that your body can't handle, then taking a manufactured medication to counteract it? It just made me think of an addict overdosing, and not thinking twice about it because the paramedic brought them back with another drug!! And this is rubber stamped by our doctors?!
I am not diabetic, but fear it as I watch my once strong and active Mother's health and overall wellbeing deteriorate OUT OF CONTROL due to her inability to control her diet-- as well as two uncles who lost limbs to the curse. My older siblings are suffering, one with pancreatitis and the other with gall stones. Diet related.
I just won't do that to myself, nor my children.0 -

As to my understanding, the only "bad" fats are the manufactured ones, trans-fats and such. If it occurs on nature, like animal fats, your body is hard-wired to know how to process it (unless we've broken it from decades of horrible eating, but it can be refreshed). This misnomer of "healthy fats" (as in saturated fat supposedly being bad and all) is as out of date as the other information we're fighting against in this forum.0
