Nausea while running

During my last 2 runs, I've become nauseated about 3/4 of the way through my run. Today I had to stop and walk a few steps to make sure I wasn't going to get sick. I was able to get back to jogging fairly quickly, once I was sure I wasn't going to be ill.

I've done a bit of Googling and see this is fairly common. I'm not sure what's causing it in my case, except that my body just isn't used to this level of exertion, and I suspect it will go away after I increase my stamina.

Anyone have any tips or ideas that have worked for you to avoid nausea when running?

Thx.

Susan

Have you tried slowing down a little bit? I'm not sure if this is the problem but have heard that runners feel nauseated when exhausted.

I know, at least in my case, it's a matter of timing with drinking water and eating light stuff, an hour or two before. I also recently started tracking my sodium, as I'm trying to identify some issues/triggers for migraines. For me, I'd been eating far less salt (or natural foods that have salt) than expected. Does a pain in your side also accompany the nausea or is it just nausea alone?

I'm not sure I can run much slower without walking. Well, that's essentially what I did - I walked 20-30 paces then jogged again. I think it is that my body is more tired now that I am completing longer runs. Maybe that's why week 7 just has you doing 25 minute runs, to get your body used to that amount of time? I'm not going to beat myself up if I have to walk a few strides, then, to keep the nausea at bay. It's better than getting sick mid-run. :)

It's just nausea. When I saw the Google results, I wondered about water and sodium levels, too. before my next run, I'll be sure to drink plenty of water. I didn't have enough water yesterday before I ran. I'm always worried I'll have to pee halfway through the run! I figured since my runs are not that long, and since it's not hot out, that water wouldn't be an issue. I guess I'm wrong about that!

Thank you both for your input! :)

I also try to eat a light snack (a piece of fruit or some nuts, etc) and a glass of water a couple of hours before a run. That way, I pee before leaving home (so far, I haven't had issues during a run, thank goodness) and my body has some energy stored.
Keep working at a solution. You'll find the problem and conquer it.

It could have everything to do with what your are eating (or not eating) before you run. I have found some foods (bananas especially) that make me nauseous. I have found that I feel better during the run if I eat some peanut butter or a protein bar before, but pretty much anything else I have to wait at least an hour after eating before I can run.

Cool - that's also good to keep in mind. I'll keep an eye on what I'm eating (and times) prior to running, and see how that affects things. Thank you!

My initial thought would be whether you're overhydrating.

But the others might be what you're eating and when, although going too fast before you're conditioned is potentially it as well.

Don't worry IndigoSue13, I'm in the same boat. Wk 7 day 1, I thought I was going to throw up just before I finished. Didn't help that the person on the treadmill next to me had bad BO. Days 2 and 3 for me were fine though. So I put it down to the 'scent' from day 1. Did Wk 8 day 1, today, and yes I wanted to hurl again before finishing. No funky smells in the air this time around. I think the body just needs to adjust to putting in the extra effort.... and fresh air too, but you'll be fine though.
