I've been doing cross fit 4 x's a week for about 3 months now and I was wondering what you eat for pre and post work out meals? I normally feel fine before my workouts and during but I am famished after. I want to get my nutrition in check to avoid cravings. Thanks!!!

I don't do crossfit but if I do a really hard workout I eat eggs and sweet potato hash. Fruit on the side.

I do 6am crossfit 5 x's a week. I eat a hardboiled egg pre-workout and then 2 eggs (cooked w/ ghee) and sweet potatoes post-workout. So far - that's been working for me.

Preworkout is a great time for fat, like eggs. Post workout is the best time of day for fast carbs and protein. When you eat fat after a workout it doesn't give you the energy you need, because it takes too long to digest. I know my personal crossfit trainer has strait up sugar after his workout, because the energy goes strait to his muscles, which really need it. I don't think that is the best route for everyone, but it shows that the immediate need of carbs without fat is what's best (my trainer is very lean and strong). I know other people do protein powder with tapioca flour, or sweet potatoes with cinnamon (no butter!). Fruit is also not going to be the absolute best choice as it also is a little more complicated to break down.

Personally I don't worry too much about when before or after a workout I get whatever nutrients. I know that there's many people who feel it's necessary to get protein in within an hour after a work out but I'm seeing lots of new research that seems to indicate that so long as you are eating enough protein overall you should be fine. It's not like protein completely disappears within an hour of eating. That being said some good quality protein would be good. If you are going to eat some starchy carbs do it after exercize as it will help replace your glycogen stores and replenish your beneficial bacteria. And yay Crossfit, I do it and LOVE it!
