Running in the rain

For those that use their phones/electronic devices to track their runs, what do you do when it rains? Is there a trick to making sure your phone stays dry, or do you leave it at home? Water proof case? Ziplock baggy?
Also, are there any dangers of running in the rain besides the obvious about getting cold and lightning storms? I live in So California, so I never really thought I'd have to worry about rain during runs, but today about ten minutes after my run, it was pouring. I was glad I didn't get caught in it, because my phone would have been ruined.
Thanks for any advice!

I usually slip my phone into a ziploc bag. I have an armband phone case that is supposed to be waterproof, but I don't like wearing it because I want to be able to easily skip songs during my run.I don't mind running in the rain, as long as it's not too cold!0
