Hi, I started my new life style on last Thursday and I am still working out the kinks. I am really trying to increase my protein and limit my carbs while flat out eliminating refined sugars. If willing, please share some of your go to food choices.
Thanks

Hi! Welcome to the low carb life : ) My diary is public, feel free to take a look, or send me a friend request. Or both! There is also a good recipe thread here too. Really anything meat, eggs, full fat dairy, is a good place to start. Veggies are good if you mainly keep to the green, leafy, and above ground varieties. Start with that, and ask all the questions you'd like0

I go through a lot of chicken, I'll throw a pack of boneless, skinless thighs in the oven at the start of the week, shred them with a fork, and use them all week in anything - salad, omelet, stir fry. I keep the seasoning when I initially cook them pretty neutral, salt, pepper, thyme, so I can add other things as I go to change it up Italian or Mexican or whatever.
There's also a super simple recipe for creamed spinach that's my go-to side when I need more veggies in a meal: http://www.ruled.me/cheesy-creamed-spinach/
I make it in much smaller batches than that whenever I want it. Sometimes I add some of the chicken to it and it becomes a whole meal.0 -
I just had a salad with raw spinach, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and some really low carb buttermilk ranch dressing. So good! But you know, it was bacon...so it's hard to go wrong there LOL0

I'm just happy I can finally eat cheese without feeling guilty! I eat it alone for a snack, melted over my veggies or scrambled eggs, cut up or shredded in my salad.0

When in doubt? Pound of bacon.
I wish I was kidding about that.0 -

At our specialty grocery store this week, I found real cheese curds. I used to have them all the time when I lived in Wisconsin, and I've never seen them anywhere else. I may have possibly wiped out the entire bag in 2 days.0 -
OH yum. I used to make cheese curds when I had my cow and so much milk I hardly knew what to do with all of it. It would be great to have her now but my hands will not take the milking any longer. Hubby called my cheese curds Squeeky cheese. I have seen them in our grocery store. I will have to pick some up. Actually some one had them on the check out in front of me and I saw them. Going on the list now.0

Welcome matamorphmama. My diary is open if you wish to have a look. Some things in there say 'raw', but they're not, I do cook them; I just want the calories (etc) to exclude what MFP will suppose I cooked them in.

That's funny, @shadesofidaho, when I was a kid we had a vegetarian meat substitute we called "squeakers" (I think it was Worthington vegetarian scallops), I'm sure for the reason your husband calls cheese curds "squeaky cheese." I LOVE cheese curds too, @JPW1990! I haven't had any since I lived in "the north country" of New York!0

I've never been to the Wisconsin State Fair but fried cheese curds are a staple at both the New York & Minnesota State Fairs. The recipe may require a bit of tweaking however since they are traditionally coated in a beer/flour batter.0

Thanks to all of you for the advice and making me feel so welcome.0

My go to foods?
Bulletproof coffee (coffee + coconut oil + butter + heavy cream (optional) + blender)
Eggs with cheese
Broccoli with cheese
Chicken cooked whole (or quarters), skin on
Pork chops
Deli meats (watch the ingredients) + mayo (ideally home made) + lettuce
Anything made with ground beef or bison (I prefer bison, but 75/25 hamburger is good in a pinch)0 -

I'd say you can look at my diary but you have to friend me first ( ) and even still its kind of a mess, lol. Most days breakfast is some sort of protein, usually bacon, eggs, sausage, sometimes ham (not all at once), mixed with veggies stir-fry style. Veggies are usually radishes, zucchini, and mushrooms. When I'm really hungry that day I also have bulletproof coffee but this food is often spread out over the morning. Lunch is a big salad and usually leftover meat if we have any in the fridge. Sometimes its soup or low carb chili and today I grilled up 2 hamburger patties because the chili has been eaten. I also usually have 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt with 2 tbsp of frozen berries and a packet or two of artificial sweetener. Dinner is a meat and usually cauliflower, zucchini, or green beans for me, with a starch for the rest of the family. I'm still looking for dinner veggies to change things up a bit though the veggies I do make I tend to make in different ways. Oopsie bread (there is a thread here, definitely check it out) is a new favorite of mine and there are variations for cake and pancakes. I snack on cheese, pepperoni, raw veggies, and sometimes fat bombs. I like bulletproof coffee as well0

I love things like smoked oysters, Nick's Spicy Sticks, wedges of Laughing Cow cheese like their Spicy Jack. I adore 5th Street Grill Turkey Italian Sausages with onions and peppers, and eat a lot of Miracle Noodles - as rice, their ziti and fettuccine style. Trying kelp noodles tonight0
